- In 1989 skateboarding was still universal... pools, ramps street, ditches, downhill, freestyle and anything else that looked like fun!
The Speed Wheels team was stacked and skater/producer Tony Roberts came in hot with his innovative angles and camera and editing techniques. Video itself was brand new as a medium and Speed Freaks set the foundation of what was to come in the future.

For me the best times , after that the 90´ and 2000´s suck a lot in skateboarding...universal rules and i still ride oldskool decks with 48 and you can do whatever you want with them...Skate or Die Folks..thx for the vid, you made my day...

Jeff Phillips was such a rad skater. I wish he had stayed around to watch vert skating come back again..I would have loved to see him skate again..so powerful.

i saw him at houston skatepark and he didnt do anything i couldnt do. i was never pro so i guess he must have known someone.
@@chrhaddenCan you pull off fakie 360 boneless? Phillips 66? Invert to fakie? If you could, you were rad af. Anyways he had a beautiful smooth style that is easy on the eyes, i that alone made him to get sponsored, also he could do a nice variety of tricks, grinds, tweaked out airs, inverts, blunt to fakie, some cool fastplant variations. To be such a tall long dude and skate with that good style, without looking lanky and slender is actually very hard, also tweaking airs like he did.

skateboarding changed so much from 89 to 99 and then barely any change from 99 to 2024
I’d say 89 to 94 was a huge leap! 99 to current you gotta blunt slide a 30 stair hand rail to even get noticed. Things are a lot gnarlier now, In 99 you can go pro skating ledges, Now we got 8 year olds doing 720’s it’s insane!!

Was 4 when this came out and it sits easily in my top 4 skate vids of all time.
I remember Grosso saying that he really regrets this part because it was a great opportunity and he just phoned it in. He is there at the pool with Hosoi and he just sits there. He said it on the nine club I think.

I agree, Jason Jesse, such a relaxed style, never misses, they were all great, but he stood out for sure...Magnussen was really ripping too!
vallely went from the sketchiest video section ever made in powell, to this !! so crazy how his style changed so much! this was his best video section imo!

How'd I miss this one back then? Most of my decks were Santa Cruz and a couple Sims.Best era of my life by far was 85-92. Being from the south back then there were no parks.We built ramps and skated whatever asphalt and concrete possible.There was an old pool from the 1920's nearby. Saw Blaize Blouin skating was incredible,RIP. Met Shepard Fairly.

dude skating the vans ramp at 7:43 (forgive me, can you tell me who it is?), has a big OJ wheels sticker on his board? So did speed wheels come out after oj's? I know it's NHS, but I don't understand the timeline I guess? little light research, ig speed wheels came out in 85 and OJ's 1970? I love this! Thanks for the videos, really enjoying them!

Eric Dressen. The inventor of OJ's in the 70's was Richard Metiver, the same man that created Speed Wheels in the 80's, which included a variety of other wheel companies. He is a true visionary.
Eric Dressen is the skater, not sure about the wheels I never skated Santa Cruz wheels. I skated Powell and Spitfire 2s. At this time a lot of wheels were being produced, hard to keep up. Street skating was starting to really take off so companies were making different hardness. 92A, 95A, and 97A was the most popular, I believe Powell freestyle wheels were 99A...

And it’s a bloody miracle! E.D has to be the most overrated skater ever. If Spead freaks was made 1980 his part would’ve been outstanding. His main super power must be picking up speed without putting his foot on the ground. And I don’t understand how his style can be that cool that he can still be a pro without doing any tricks.
@@danielakerblom Dressen overrated? Bro it's 89! The next year he was doing 360 flips and a bunch of tech tricks...while going fast with steez. But in this vid how many tricks does he do in his mini ramp part alone?

Everyone, I know who skated wore a ball cap turned it around backwards after watching Eric, dress and shredding in Santa Cruz speed freaks wheel video. And then we went to Ross and got Converse cons in wacky colors took the laces out spray painted them flat black, put the laces back and skated the crap out of our flat black Cons Super stealth skate shoes. DIY MAGA 🗽🇺🇸
why are they remaking shit wheels like oj s and slimeballs but leaving out some of the best wheels ever . BULLETS 60MM 95A
