Nice video, although by looking at the comments you can tell a lot of people don't realize it's not "fake" or a real race, the BMW is merely keeping pace to get the KTM on film. I do foresee a test next year between the 1290 Super Duke R, the upcoming BMW S1000R, an MV Augusta Brutale 1090RR, and let's throw in the new Monster 1200S to make it a foursome!
Good little test. I was expecting this to be such a done deal we would see the BMW annihilate the Duke almost regardless of skill/technique! BMW looked to be short shifting much of the time and braking way early in order to help the Duke stay in front but on the occasions where the RR was close to flat out on the straights I'm impressed how close the KTM was.
guys the S1000rr is in rain mode I've ridden a 2010 on the track and that thing still wants to wheelie (light at front) well over 240kmh. This is a set up... the S1KRR is crazy fast...

SV650s are really popular budget race bikes as once you upgrade the suspension internals they handle well, have a versatile and solid engine, and are relatively light in race trim. I always wondered if the same would be true of SV1000s...
Of course this bike will not beat a fully-faired, purpose-built, full-blown race bike, but it doesn't have to. With a bike like the Superduke R, it's about fun-factor. Pretty hard to have more fun that that (although a hopped up, super-light 450SM might give it a run for it's money)...
In watching this video, it is obvious that it is a clip promoting the KTM for the BMW rider was short shifting, prematurely braking, and just about every other tactic to allow the KTM to take lead. Not to take anything away from the KTM however if I was on that 1000RR that day, the only glimpse you would get of the KTM was through my rear view mirrors........

Whereas, the BMW is in the middle of the lane, and has to adjust his line at the last moment.. But epic battle all in all! (y)
Yeah, this is the rider. That BMW is possibly the finest bike made for tracks. I know the new super duke is fast but the right rider on that s1000 will just kill everything. Still that KTM is an absolute monster. Wow. The specs they're boasting will probably scare the sx14's and busa's even. If it's what they say it is it's going to be badass.
awesome! people who are trying to turn this into some kind of cock fight don't understand anything about riding bikes fast, the comradrie and the fact that both riders are probably buddies enjoying a laugh and having fun. It doesn't matter if you're on a 25k bike or a 2k SV650 that's seen better days!
I do find it problematic following another racer closely. I feel they obscure my view and hinder me getting my braking or tip-in points right. Im also a little uncomfortable if I'm a bit faster through the section and my pace brings me right up behind them with momentum, if they slow down near the apex I'd be forced to run wide or brake mid corner. Their lines aren't really the distraction though, I'm always watching theirs and adjusting mine to give me an advantage or overtaking opportunity.
This was far more a comparison of rider ability than it was the bikes. The BMw rider was either backing off in order to film the KTM pretty much everywhere, or the KTM rider had quite a bit more ability. I'm sure the KTM is very fast though, I'd love one!
For not being a supersport nor having a windshield that's a good ride... However the track layout is more in favor of torque than HP. On a different track things could be different... nevertheless we are watching top notch machines here.
+oliver mobey It sure is on the high revs... So 0-100 km/h => SuperDuke 1290R Everything above that and the Rice Rockets take over. But you don't buy a SuperDuke 1290R as a track bike. On the road within the "legal speed limits" the torque of that KTM is just way more usefull than a superbike.

Very impressive machine I would ride the KTM all day long and be fine the 1000RR might be a different story being 6'2 cant wait to sit on one at the Motorcycle live show at the NEC and could be tempted to part x my Z1000SX 130bhp for 180bhp looks way more fun and in the real world would take this bike every time also there is sure to be some aftermarket screen fairings etc in due course..
nothing fake here.both riders are very good rider on the 1290 duke is better and more skilled.probably Jeremy McWilliams former gp rider who developed ktm1290r? hes always on the perfect line,sooper smooth, he clips every single apex with excellent accurasy every lap and outbrakes bmw every time at the end of the straight. So,if they r on ktm both of them the bmw rider most likely vould see him first 2-3 corners and that would be all for the day! cheers!

OK, read carefully... Club level is RELATIVELY close, compared to track days for example which have both the slowest non racers and the fastest pro racers. BUT JUST AS YOU SAY even in that environment where ability is much closer, there is still a very significant variance in pace. Which is exactly why you get people on supermotos beating people on superbikes in the streetfighters class. That was what I said from the beginning. But you have proven time and time again that you can't read.
The guy on the Superduke seems to have more talent than the other one cause he brake too quickly and dont manage to keep his speed has well as the Ktm rider... anyway those bikes both seems so amazing!
I personaly ride a single cylinder supermotard, and there is no way i catch any of sportbikes, simply because my top speed is 170km/h, which is speed of entrance on straight here, where sportbikes reach 270 on end... No way hard breaking (as my bike has 80 kilos less) can compensate that! Also in high speed bends, SM is itchy... On twisty tracks, there is a difference... now did that answer you?
Yup... the BMW has advantage of more rpm and also of fairings... air resistance maters a LOT at high speeds... Im quite surprised KTM is as fast om straights...
kommt mir auch so vor, bei 2.12 Minuten verbremst er sich und hat danach die verlorenen Meter wieder schnell gutgemacht. Auffallend ist auch das er vor den Kurven, wenn er vorne ist, auffallend extrem herunterbremst. Wahrscheinlich wieder so eine virale Werbeaktion

Kawa hat bei der 10er copy-paste gemacht,Audi wird Ducati dorthin bringen.KTM sollte sich ebenso wie die anderen Herstellern mit denen zusammen tun,die hier schon Erfahrungen haben. Und da kenne ich in Deutschland nur noch einen,der hierzu in der Lage ist- KORO
I think a lot of you are missing the point. The 1290 wasn't built as a superbike to contend with the beemer etc. At this speed, that fairing counts for volumes, and it does have a bit more HP. What you should take away from this is that KTM have basically built a naked good enough to hang with the best outright sports bike...a bike that was built to beat the blade, R1, kwakker and gixxer. Let's see you lot hang on to a naked at those speeds. Of the two? I'd have the KTM any day.

Finde auch der BMW-treiber war immer sehr früh auf der Bremse, damit der Duke-Tréiber wieder vor kam.... Wie auch immer, schönes Video war es alle mal. Little disappointed with the Ktm in this vid. Is this really the new 1290? The BMW has very similar power and weight stats compared to the Ktm, the only real difference is aerodynamics. Yet the BMW appears to annihilate the Ktm out of every corner and straight. The gain it makes is incredible, not what I was expecting at all. I hope another video is available soon.

Well i can read, can you: fairings are fact sportbikes will be, and they are faster on high speed circuits as supermotards etc, by a margin. If piloted by similary skilled pilots, they will open gap on straights which is to big to close, esp as overtaking in bends is hard.. Also sportbike brakes better, because of lower center of gravity as supermotard.. higher center of gravity means more torque at breaking, means that supermotards can not brake as hard, because they tend to rise backwheel up.

Just to add: air drag rises exponentialy, at 200 km/h it is 4 times bigger as it is at 100km/h... So fairings do have meaning :)

I think that the 1290 is as fast as the S1000RR until 200km/h or Maybe 250.
