My mom carried a lot of shame from her childhood. She was a pretty severe alcoholic and I hated it. But as I got older I started realizing how she felt when she was sober. Your example of the shame being so strong that you feel naked was spot on. She knew I’d get her to a hospital and to AA Women’s Groups but at a certain point I just accepted the drinking. Something very dark happened to her as a child and I wasnt going to ruin our relationship so I took her as she was and loved her to the end. (Remember I spent my childhood and 20s and 30s bickering about the drinking. One day I had an epiphany and just made the most of our relationship. I loved her more than anything, drunk or sober. ❤
