When my aunt introduced me to this guy at a small bar show in SD I didn't realize I was in the presence of a legend till I heard him throw down. I will never forget that night.
I'm so jealous of anyone that got to attend this thing. I live in Texas. Lol. I did get to see Makoto and Ltj Bukem this year, so I got lucky. Don't take what y'all have over across the pond for granted!
my friend.. do not take your own music taste for granted. At least you haven't been swept away by the EDM shitstorm that currently consumes America. you have your own mind to be thankful for that, at least.
my friend.. do not take your own music taste for granted. At least you haven't been swept away by the EDM shitstorm that currently consumes America. you have your own mind to be thankful for that, at least.
No way. I'm 35. I grew up on house music. These kids today don't know about music with funk and soul. Even the deep techy stuff is great. I started liking DNB around 1999/2000. Don't get me wrong, I love bangin' Neurofunk and ragga/jungle too, but liquid is that funk/soul I grew up on. Calibre and Spectrasoul (imo) just create that deep vibe better than anyone. I love it.
But yeah, the whole EDM shit makes me want to kick a puppy. Shit, the whole "wait for the drop culture" is ridiculous. American "raves" are a bunch of Dude-Bros wearing candy bracelets and looking like clowns. They couldn't tell you the difference between genres. My city has a small, but loyal dnb scene, so I stick with the over 30 crowd. Lol. /rant
Stellar set. Just like all of his sets. True legend in my books. Also, who ever did the light work on this one, definitely deserves a raise. Holy balls.
I've been following Makoto's releases since 2000. He's been influential is has portion of DnB which was not unlike LTJbukems, but with a much more melodically inspired method producing. IMHO his fusion of Tokyo fusion jazz and liquid jazz, all with heavy Japanese influences, are what what makes him superior to the rest of the jungle DJs ATM, not to mention all his views!. His tracks range from beautiful melodic tracks to bad ass hardcore jungle at its best.
I'm gonna disagree a touch there. "hardcore jungle"....I dunno. He goes slightly techie, but even those aren't beast-grade dark/hard tunes. It'd be hard for him to go full tilt anyhow, cause that is really two different vibes and/or crowds. I used to spin the darkness back in the late 90s/early 2000s and its kinda hard to really turn that corner with a liquid crowd. Some would be down, but some would immediately SIT down....or worse...leave. Also, try that shit with some fools that came for the hard shit and they will DEFINITELY leave or wait for your set to be done-zo.
I agree, he rarely does play anything hard and I could have used a better description. but sometimes he does drop a good jungle tune and he knows just when, IMHO. I was on DOM when I wrote that, so, it could be very inaccurate, but when I re-read it, it's not that bad of a description .I DJ'd from 03'-06' but stopped because, TBH, at that time there wasn't a big scene in Orange county. I used Denon s5000's, one of the first digital TTables and it wasn't bad. I got one silver technique, with the LED in the center, but they tried to make it just like playing a record playing technique, but it didn't have a little function that the Denon's did, which was a + & - button which slightly increased and decreased the speed and it made it much simpler to do it AL Fresco. The technique's were no good, because the stupid +/- "slider" was too sensitive and it was difficult to increase or decrease that small amount that made *all* the difference.
Oh he's a solid DJ and producer. No doubt. He was pretty dam smooth with his mixes even before the whole digital/sync era. Back then, you had to have hands. Bukem's mixes could get kinda raggedy back in the day, but his selection, if we're talking spectrum wide, was beyond reproach. Makoto had cleaner mixes, but Bukem had those dubplate gems that NEVER saw a release. Plus Bukem + Conrad was the best DJ/MC combo ever. Makoto ran with Deeizm for a bit...and that was ok...but Bukem +Conrad: woah. I'd take them even over old school Andy C + GQ, as far as complementing each other. Many times, the MCs can be annoying or kinda in the way, but those groups knew how to strike the proper balance. Lost art, really.
The first track has been released now: 'You Bring Me Joy' by Mirai (see humanelements.bandcamp.com/album/you-bring-me-joy-if-this-is-it -- Bandcamp only)

Been listening to this music for over 30 years. This set is up there with the best; joyful, hard, melodic, dirty. Salute Makoto

Very correct. It's all very nice having a bit of crowd hype on the build up. But it's the intelligent dnb that really gets the soul into the events.
Makoto the legend, glad the set made it on youtube, absolute banger.
The bass quality is amazing through headphones
Yeah man HD25 here sounds amazing
Makoto aways awesome. These bass lines of this set its so powerful and gorgeous

Does anyone know what venue this is? Is it the festival or one of the separate Liquicity events?
If i remember correctly this was at the Marktkantine in Amsterdam
