Sounds amazing mate!! Magnificent job, truly. This is my favourite soundtrack of them all and the intro of SQIII is the definitive version of the theme (for me) so I really appreciate this. Take my bloody money!!
The theme (specifically the SQ3 refrain) started playing in my head literally from NOTHING so I had to google around to find what game it was from, then which sequel, and then landed at this. Thank you for remastering!
Amazing work! This soundtrack could very well fit into a 3D-remake of this game. Space Quest III is my favourite non-Quest For Glory Sierra game and one of my favourite video games of all time. Yet again, fantastic job!
We did a remastered version of it, along with some new tracks, for the Space Quest III 3D fan game: error47.bandcamp.com/album/space-quest-iii-3d-remastered-and-expanded-soundtrack
Cheers! Yet another wonderful job! I will more than likely end up buying this one because it's my favorite space quest game, and the reorchestration is just phenomenal.
Thanks, I've never sen the tail end of this. By the time I started this series the point and click versions came out so I didn't even finish III, like a lot of people, I imagine. We were so glad to see text-driven games go away, even Zack and the purple tentacles became easier.
Not sure I like the upscaling, but I won’t judge, I used to run emulators with Super 2xSai myself. I’ve finally got my hands on a way to output my Pentium Pro video thru composite so I can smooth out most of that dithering, but my audio for capture would only be an authentic opl3 SB16. If everything goes right, I’ll have a video of this game ready and uploaded by the end of the week or sometime next week. No promises, tho, I’ve already had to replace about half my machine’s components (even had to get a PS/2 card). SQ3 is and always will be the most nostalgic Sierra game for me. ...But I will still die on that “SQ2 is best quest” hill!
The upscaling is a bit wonky sometimes because the engine sometimes has to make some not-so-educated guesses as to which bits go where. Also, turns out all the grit and dust (single-pixel textures) were in fact drawn with a CIRCLE TOOL, so it ends up drawing a little spherical dot! Free tip, if you play the game through ScummVM, there's an option in the menu to bypass the dithering. It's a controversial choice but it can be done. ;)
@@spacequesthistorian Oh, I didn't know about that option in ScummVM. Yeah, I'm not sure I like it that much, in fact, I think in some areas, it LOSES detail, and of course it doesn't touch the bit-mapped dithering. Anyway, I kinda got the capture to work (after completely reinstalling Win98SE and learning the onboard secondary IDE channel on that machine is completely bunked. Oh, and after arguing with Windows for like 3 hours that yes, that driver IS for the video card I have you using), and I uploaded footage of the SQ3 intro on my channel if you want to look at it for comparison. I think the robot's room showcases it best (but Roger's close-up looks pretty shnazzy, too).
Everything I wrote yesterday about the Mac's upscaling comes back in this video. The lines are drawn thicker and the pen diameters are scaled to match, but notice things like the tractor beam at 2:07, which as a bitmap *cannot* be upscaled the same way.
Yep, that's what PickledDog talks about with sprites vs backgrounds. The tractor beam is actually a sprite so when it comes down, it's all lovely chunky pixels.
@@Kawa-oneechan This is also the conclusion I came to in the "SQ with upscaled graphics" video. These games are fine the way they are, and trying to upscale their artwork is doing them a bit of a disservice. At the same time, though, it is endlessly fascinating. And the primary reason we did this was to give the SQ3 vinyl some cool artwork that few people had seen before, kinda like what we did with SQ4. (Although SQ4 was a bit easier.)
@@spacequesthistorian The worst part is people who insist on using undither because our modern LCD screens don't blur the image the way old CRTs did. Considering even the old IBM monitors that came with the IBM PC AT could handle 80 column text mode with pretty crisp edges, half that amount should be at least as crisp. You may have seen me tweet about it.
Thank you! My buddy Jon and I have actually since remastered this and written over an hour of new music for an upcoming 3D remake of SQ3. Very excited for people to hear that!
This is well done, love it! Question, how did you license these pieces of music from the game to release a re-recording on Bandcamp and Vinyl?? I use soundrop for all of my licensing but they require a soundtrack release and a spotify link to license tracks to cover. Also, Any chance I could, uh, borrow your indexed midi files? @@spacequesthistorian Too bad I don't own a vinyl player :D. Cheers to you ! Although I have to ask : why did you chose the weird graphics filter over the pixelated awesomeness of SQIII ?

Great! thanks for the "remastered memories". Wish it had Astro Chicken in there as well, but this is a real folk song anyway, not Sierra's original music.
We couldn't quite fit the Astro Chicken music onto the vinyl. 😅 BUT... I did actually recently do a remastered version of the soundtrack for an upcoming 3D remake of Space Quest III, and it includes TWO versions of the Astro Chicken theme!
@@spacequesthistorian the remake from Kjell Emanuelsson which was only done for the first part of the game? or another one?? Kjell's section looked and felt really great i thought!

Do you mean the graphics? Those aren't filters. What you see is what happens if you tell the game's vector graphics to render at a higher resolution. It's recorded through something called FreeSCI that tries to interpolate the vector instructions for high resolution displays. Sometimes it's a little wonky, but that's because it essentially has to guess where some lines intersect or are meant to stop.

Ooff, the moment the pod is picket up by the garbage freighter is super well done! I love that part so much!
Thank you! Glad you like it :)
