it’s crazy to think that there was once a chick fil a, starbucks, mcdonald’s, panda express in the food court. There was also an Aeropostal, Hollister, Vans, Body Central, Wet Seal, Victoria’s secret, Express and fun fact the Express was connected to the Bath and Body works! There was also an old navy which closed a while back as well. it was the first in mall old navy in the US.
Right there with you bro, these videos help me so much with my anxiety. Also not sure if you take medicine for your mental health, I know I resisted it for literally years. However after trying a few different meds I've found something that really helps me. Here's to a great 2022!
I used to live in Orlando and West Oaks mall used to be THAT mall where everyone went! Got my 1st kiss at the Sears there lmao! Good times, good memories I will never forget. Thank you for this video.
I think the big thing about your videos I appreciate is that your videos are genuine and authentic and you include history and backstory. It doesn’t have to be fancy and perfection doesn’t need adjustment. You are perfectly you!!! Thank you for your dedication and time you put into your work! Cheers to a Happy Healthy New Year!!!
Keep up the good work! FYI McRae's was a department store started in Jackson, MS in the early 1900s. Most of their stores until the 1970s were isolated to Mississippi. In the mid 80s the chain was sold to the owners of the Parisian chain, who then in turn started opening McRae's stores outside of Mississippi. For many years the store in Pensacola FL was the most distant from the Jackson HQ. Early 80s Parisian was sold to Saks, who in turned sold most of the McRae's stores to Belk, who runs the stores in MS now. For many years, however, the former McRae's HQ in Jackson was the data center for all Saks stores. They closed that about five years ago, so McRae's is long gone.
@@AcesAdventures1 Bring more attention to the "Financial Vampires" at moonbeam capital. They suck the life out of properties everywhere they go. They ought to be shamed at every turn because in the end they destroy lives of so many ordinary working people.
Great video! I forgot to mention that I was actually tuning in from a dead mall! 😂 Was dining at a Primanti brothers in the Valley Mall in Hagerstown MD.
I really enjoy the mall videos as they provide an view into a place that I probably wouldn't see otherwise. (I do enjoy hearing some background / history, but I can appreciate that's not everyone's cup of tea.) I'm grateful for the great content Ace, and I wish you well for 2022.
Nice to see a mall in my neck of the woods! I shudder when you mention moonbeam capital though, that's the kiss of death. Like you said in the video, I've been having a rough time with my mental health the past couple years. I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your videos, they really help me when I just need to unwind and transport myself to another place for a little while. Here's to hoping 2022 is a good year! P.S. if you ever come to Sarasota, we've got a couple dead malls with some interesting architecture, as well as a very lively upscale mall.
Ocoee is historically the location of a race riot. If you think this is bad, you should go across town to Oviedo Mall and see Rouse's last property. It has been pretty much dead since it opened.
If people really are griping about not enough history, you can basically rubber stamp one as follows: Mall opens in 1970-something to much fanfare or public outcry, take your pick. Anchors change several times through buy-outs and restructuring. Anchors declare bankruptcy and leave. Mall has questionable "facelift". Mall has a newsworthy crime. Mall changes hands several times and ultimately bought by Cohan or Moonbeam at sheriff's auction and run into the ground. Bath & Bodyworks and Boost Mobile stores carry on. The end. To me it looks like they were running the lighting on night light mode, i.e. what it's supposed to be after closing.
I feel like someday in the near future, the shopping mall of the 80's - 90's will become a sort of museum/attraction that people might talk about as if it were an amusement park.
Wow I haven't been there since like 2009 and it was packed last time I was in that food court there was lines to get something to eat and the last movie that I saw there was I am Legend
As a local who lives next to the West oaks mall, I very much enjoy the slower less crowded mall as it is now. I enjoyed your slow walk-throughs of these spaces. I would like to rephrase the term "dead" mall, however (with respect to the creator) and say it's more of a "re-purposed" mall. Instead of the tourist hub that it was in the 90s, it is more of a hub for the community. It now has a lot of small businesses and organizations such as a (tennis club, a dance group, a church, some nonprofit programs, a vocational job center along with a DMV). I agree there are still a lot of empty storefronts, but I have seen just in a year from when this video was made it's still there and may turn into something of a farmers market after not too long. Very interesting, thank you for making this.
Mall of Millenia is much nicer, safer. West Oaks is nest to 1 of Orlando's gang, drug 👮🏻♂️ centers. Pine Hills, Mercy Dr. Florida Mall is okay but not worth a special trip.
As were most malls across this great country. Wall to wall people, full parking lots, special entertainment. I always wonder what will happen to all the center isle small places that get rolled out around the holiday season. At the local mall I walked by an open door and saw a large room full of the roll around carts used by people selling all sorts of odd things, where will they all go now? But not this year, 2021.
I'm glad to hear that you are coming back to Florida. Next time you visit, if you are able to, you should check out Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales. It's been dead for quite some time but is a really nice-looking mall. I believe it opened in the 80s. Not far from there is another neat, closed property, The Chalet Suzanne which was a famous and very pink hotel and resort. Bok Tower is also nearby and worth a stop if you have the time. Keep up the great work!
It's funny how 17 years ago, this mall had of all things an actual LAN center. Shame that idea kinda died all around. It's also sad, that how a lot of retail places around this mall (which is a few minutes' drive from me) actually moved away from the area due to a lot of crime. The Target just a mile east on Colonial just lost too much to even remain in business. Honestly, Anthony, you, Sal, Kristin, and all the others I sub to on this topic, I appreciate each and every different style you folks bring. I think that's what makes this topic so great. Those of us who have a passion for this, and want to take it seriously, each have a unique way of wanting to do videos. I was here yesterday on a Saturday and the food court was popping. Probably many people getting something to eat before watching a movie. Both anchors stores had a normal amount of people, too. I don't know, I think this mall probably has at least a few years left of life in it. I'm surprised you didn't mention the strange murals of the hats in the sky. I was there in August of 2022 because I had to go to DMV. Everything is the exact same as it looks in this video except it was definitely more well lit in the areas that had operating stores. Definitely cool to see the old Spencer’s and bath and body works store fronts. Event saw the OG hot topic doors but that store was closed RIP 😪
Mccory's store is a old 5&10 store. Would carry many items like some clothing, cosmetic jewelry, sewing supplies , painting supplies, model supplies , non-perishable foods etc... Lot smaller than a Walmart and generally bigger than convenience store.

Hey Anthony, you mentioned going to see the Home Alone house in the future. Just to add some other points of interest, there are several locations from John Hughes movies around that area - Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club, etc. Hope you'll maybe be able to check some of those out, too! Happy travels!
The food court area has an absolutely gorgeous aesthetic on the exterior, especially at night! Before I knew of this mall's existence years and years ago I found a pic online of the food court entrance at night and thought it was so beautiful, that I kept it in a Microsoft Word file until years later I somehow discovered the name of the mall. Is the carousel shut down due to Covid? I know play areas in malls everywhere are shut down, but carousels not being operational never crossed my mind actually but would make a lot of sense.
the carousels were discontinued around 2013? Once i realized they weren’t operating anymore i was too old to ride them so it could’ve been even earlier, Safe to say once the mall started to decline was when they stopped operations on the carousels. The lion was always my favorite.
I worked in over 100 malls during the 1990’s thanks to being the “Clean Up King” for K.B Toys. And now I still enjoy the history of what’s happened to these properties. You sound Burned out ACE. Maybe take a break for a month or so and reconsider what your doing. You can’t understand the future until you understand the past.
I get that it's night outside but the mall doesn't have any bright lights. Mall is not complete with out the red and white checkered Bath & Body Works. Yes the pandemic stinks! I work in healthcare field so I understand. I like watching your videos on breaks!!!!😁
Yea it’s not supposed to be that dark in there. It used to be very well lit. Looks like they’re just saving on the electric bill and using about 20% of their lights. Makes the mall look even more depressing
Anthony i really enjoy your channel and content. I have followed you for a couple of years now and i as well am a big wrestling fan and i often see you superchat on JDfromNY206 channel. Keep up the great work!
Hey please set up a crowd funded business where you take over an empty mall and do something exciting, like remodel it with small affordable apartments, or rip up the parking lot and plant produce you can sell. YOU are the perfect one to do something great with one of the malls that are out of business.
For anyone who thinks that mall is busy, I live in Burlington MA where we have a thriving giant mall. A dead day is much more busy than this. Dead malls don't last long here in the Boston area because real estate is super in demand. The huge malls here that are thriving are morphing and changing with the times, getting almost constant renovations. It seems interesting that the mall is also competing with several, new large retail concepts which are old industrial park roads converted into individual "downtown" like shopping districts. The funny story about the mall is that it only has two of its original four anchors left, yet it managed to successfully redevelop them into "retail experiences." The old Sears was redeveloped into another wing of small inward facing stores on the bottom floor and outward only facing stores on the outer rim. The renovated the second floor into a smaller Primark department store, similar to the one in the old Filenes building in Downtown Crossing, Boston. I'd be interested to see what happens if Macy's went out of business, which is in the original Jordan Marsh anchor. It's the only real part of the mall that looks somewhat original. (Built in 1968)
Can someone fill me in on moonbeam? I went to this mall a few times growing up but i spent much more time at fashion square. After seeing the video about fashion square i drove by it the other day and its really depressing to see it now and remember it with full parking lots and new construction.
Moonbeam is usually shorthand for Moonbeam Capital. Their business doesn't seem to be tough to understand. Essentially, Moonbeam Capital has had a reputation for buying up malls and running them into desolation, likely to write it off later or launder money (unsure which). They're better than U.S. Black Spruce Enterprise Group, that's for sure.
Is this the mall that's at the end of International Drive? It may be coincidental that the architecture looks just like that one, which was an outlet mall when I was dragged there in 1991. First time in Florida, don't remember what kind it was, dragged there then as well. International Drive was a LOT different then, barren. You had the hotels/motels near Disney, the other end, the mall, nothing in the middle except the round hotel highrise (Quality Inn at the time). You knew you were halfway down the street when you passed it, and was visible for about 1/3 of the whole stretch.
There was a sears anchor blue ,Hollister ,McDonald's ,music store that mall started to die in 2010 because they opened an outdoor mall about 15 min from there and everyone stopped going there but back in the day you couldn't even walk there of how full it was
Namdar is also employing the "let's keep this dying mall afloat with Mom and Pop shops" strategy for the Concord Mall in Wilmington, Delaware. There's this Mom and Pop snack stand taking the place of a long-closed Subway selling some banging milkshakes.
Love to see you and Adam team up for a few videos....I know you don't like being on camera but I love what both of you guys do !! Merry Christmas Anthony from Australia 👍
im an aew fan too. i ran into Jon Moxley about a month ago at Lowes hardware here in northern ky. the pic of him got some traction and earned me some hate lol. im new here and i love it!
They made to many malls over the years. It would have been appropriate if things would have stayed the same as they were in the 80s and 90s. If the internet suddenly disappeared and that would never happen then malls would start making a humongous comeback within two years.
Moonbeam KILLS MALLS DEAD (tm) If you're coming to FL check out the Crystal River Mall and maybe Gulfview Square (in New Port Richey which already had a comment here) - the former is probably more dead than the latter
it’s crazy to think that there was once a chick fil a, starbucks, mcdonald’s, panda express in the food court. Wow
Didn't this mall open in 1996 though? I know of some Old Navys that opened in malls as early as 1994.
There was even a Disney Store
I’m very much struggling and your videos bring me so much comfort. Thank you.
Glad to help!

Bro, i love going to the Mall it saddens me to see Malls that were packed every weekend in the 90s go down like in recent years.
Having dark areas has got to be energy saving. It's definitely NOT inviting though. That's for sure. Great video.

Crazy to think my mom told me that this was once a thriving mall.
Same

Funny how the dead mall in Houston West Oaks Mall has a Dillard's clearance center 🤔
Dillard’s is odd
Amazing compared to what it was like on opening day and to Disney Springs currently!

I'd love to see that irony, mom and pops business taking over the mall spaces. That could get interesting if people created things again.
I don't know the history of Moonbeam malls? What's the info on that?
Anyone know what the song playing at the beginning is?
Can someone tell me what the song is?
What kind of camera do you use?
Wow Spencer's Gifts has old signage and is not modern kinda surprised by that. I like the videos you do you and happy new year Ace.
That would probably be the former Artegon Marketplace which is now Dezerland. West Oaks Mall is on West Colonial Drive and Clarke Road.
@@kmoney2800 OK. It looked so familiar.
I remember when this mall opened and we drove all the way from orlando to it
There was a sears anchor blue ,Hollister ,McDonald's ,music store that mall started to die in 2010 because they opened an outdoor mall about 15 min from there and everyone stopped going there but back in the day you couldn't even walk there of how full it was
You use Final Cut Pro?
Yes
Namdar is also employing the "let's keep this dying mall afloat with Mom and Pop shops" strategy for the Concord Mall in Wilmington, Delaware. There's this Mom and Pop snack stand taking the place of a long-closed Subway selling some banging milkshakes.
Was this land apart of the "OCOEE MASSACRE??" CURIOUS!....B/C THT WLDNT BE BORING!!
Love to see you and Adam team up for a few videos....I know you don't like being on camera but I love what both of you guys do !! Merry Christmas Anthony from Australia 👍
You as well, how is covid going there?
@@AcesAdventures1 yeah still here and no signs of going away. Stay safe mate👍
im an aew fan too. i ran into Jon Moxley about a month ago at Lowes hardware here in northern ky. the pic of him got some traction and earned me some hate lol. im new here and i love it!
That was you? Lmao that's awesome
I'll bet it was due to shoplifting that this mall fell into hard times!
Hard to say!
Considering the type of people who live in that area I'd say that's a fair bet
They made to many malls over the years. It would have been appropriate if things would have stayed the same as they were in the 80s and 90s. If the internet suddenly disappeared and that would never happen then malls would start making a humongous comeback within two years.
What is the name of the song in the beginning??
Yes it’s 💯 on point live across the street and I’m in disbelief on how it’s still open
Moonbeam KILLS MALLS DEAD (tm)
If you're coming to FL check out the Crystal River Mall and maybe Gulfview Square (in New Port Richey which already had a comment here) - the former is probably more dead than the latter
Hey Anthony great work have a question if you ever at a check out the Gulf View Mall in Port Richey Florida
Sad all these malls fail, these were great places at one time.
now do tha Houston version of West Oaks Mall
