You sir, are the best juggler I've ever seen! Keep it up bro :D A true inspiration to watch so many variations at once, especially when I just learned the basic one :) We're all one
I am just sitting here with my hand over my mouth speechless... BOOOOOOOM! unbelievable. how can your mind hold so many patterns! You are the Encyclopedia of ball juggling! and this is just Mills! One of my most favorite Juggling videos. Ever. Now you are doing 4! I forgot there was more than 3ball! Super freak! You are a way better ball juggler than Jason Garfield. You son of a 5 ball mills! Unbelievable.
@MadJugglerTV I spent a couple hours brainstorming, then a couple hours filming, and waaaay too many hours editing. I have to thank you for the inspiration. If you didn't set the challenge to do as many mills tricks as possible I would not have made this video.
I'm glad someone finally commented positively about the music. This video has had several "good video, awful music" comments. I also really like this song and thought it fit the video quite well :) Thank you!
And the juggling video of the year goes to... I'm a Mess-addicted juggler and you've got the good stuff I need. There are plenty in there I wouldn't have thought of, and I'm sure they'll just provide starting points for my own exploration. Some of these are debatable as Mills Mess Variations - for instance, I personally believe that Boston Mess is unrelated to Mills Mess. Seriously though, this is immense. On behalf of the entire juggling community (whom I represent), thank you.
steve, i really appreciate the work that must have gone into making the video, and i'm sure there must have been a lot of work. you've done a great act for the juggling community as a whole. beyond just the video showing the skills, the cataloging and tutorial linking goes above and beyond what anyone could reasonably ask. thanks for posting this. -alex "sandypants" trendler
It's a 42333 mess variation. When the arms are crossed and you're doing the under-the-wrist throw/exchange, you sorta just do an extra exchange (42) with your arms still crossed then go back to mills (333). I hope that helps!
@johnnations Thanks, John! I spent about 2 hours brainstorming and compiling a list of tricks before filming. Took me about 2 hours to film all this stuff, some of which I have fairly solid so it didn't take too many tries. Believe it or not, editing the video was actually the most time consuming part!
Very fun to watch sir. May I just ask you two questions? One, how long have you been juggling for now and two, from what sources did you learn to do these tricks because as vast as youtube is it can be difficult to find very specific and rare tricks.
@meshunderlay I agree, some of these variations are very slight variations to the previous trick. Example, mills mess VS clawed mills mess. Takeouts VS clawed takeouts. They are essentially the same pattern with different catch technique. But, I feel they are different enough to count as seperate tricks, even though the difference is not massive.
@craig6244 There has been some confusion about this. These are "mess" variations, only suggesting that the common theme is tricks that involve some type of crossing of the arms. Technically speaking, any variation of mills mess would not be mills mess at all, but rather a different trick with only some type of similarities to mills mess (i.e. crossing of the arms) .... yet still, it's not too much of a stretch to refer to these types of patterns as "mills mess" variations.
@thegoheads Yeah standard hand movement during period 2,4 and 5 siteswaps makes it difficult/awkward, especially if it has 1 in it somewhere. during 75314 you have to do 30 throws before the pattern repeats on the same side. I've done the 3 different 7531 on both sides, and 74414 properly for atleast 15 catches a few years back :P I'm looking forward to you learning it! And great job with the video.
@TABjuggler I start with 3 in each hand and throw a (6x,4) set of throws. Then you have a stack of 2 balls approaching a hand holding 2 balls and you can go right into [33] from there.
@MescalineBanana I guess I caused some confusion with the title "mills mess variations". I realize a lot of these are simply "mess" style patterns that don't have much to do with the authentic mills mess, as pointed out in some of the other comments. I'm glad you liked the video!
@Nlfreaks learn to do the windmill (aka side circles) but the hand that reaches under to catch under the arm, well make it pass over and catch over the arm (VERY MINDMELTING AT START ^^). Get that on both sides, and then to do the mills mess version just do one side circle with above catch one way, then switch ways with an above catch again but the circle is the other way, like mills mess but with above catches. Mind. Melting. but fun as hell and neat to watch =)
@MassacreOlsztyn They were floating around in my memory banks, I wrote them all down before I filmed the video though. I do have a very long list of 3ball tricks somewhere, but it's very disorganized. My siteswap lists, however, are very organized!
I enjoyed the video immensely, and it's only due to my sometimes-type-a-ways that I'll say this.... Some of the variations were only variations in the way that a Half Shower is a variation on a Cascade. Of course, maybe I'm just tired, or jealous, or both, who knows?
HOLY SHIT STEVE! you neverstop amazing me! crazy stuff in there especially like the multiplex stuff with 4,5 and 6 balls offcourse! when will you start on the actual 6 ball millsmess?? oh great music as well!!!
@MangoPopper hahahaha, I didn't have the colors aligned properly! It is simply a [43]23 mess with outside multiplexes and active 2s. Definitely NOT a "traffic light"
Holy %$&(*#% this was amazing. Steve! how long did it take you to get this all on video? do you just, NAIL all those patterns in a try or two? I'd be working on it til the sun finished its Main Phase. Great job juggling, editing, and cataloging!
@thegoheads I was honetly thinking about the tricks with names already like... Cherry Picker, Mikes Mess, though I guess that's being picky. Keep up the great juggling vids. - mesh "loves-the-kraken" underlay ^_^
@nomorepoetsplease Wow, thanks! I actually learned a lot of the tricks in this video from the tutorials that are linked to in the info box, so I suppose I'm just returning the favor by compiling them all together... These videos are a lot of work, but I enjoy it and I'm glad people find it helpful!
woho! thats amazing! i love the 4 balls mills mess variations, in the futur can you do a video tutorial for the mills mess variations in this video? (not all obviuously... xD) i only do a 4 balls mills mess (11 catches =.='' ) but i practice them, and the 4 balls mills mess take outs. (sorry for the lenguage, i don't speak very good english...)
@TABjuggler I actually never tried [33] mess before I made this video. Only took me a few minutes of practice to get a decent run. If you have several mess patterns solid, and your multiplexing skills are adequate, the [33] mess is not incredibly difficult to learn. Not easy, but not incredibly difficult either.
@JointDemise No. Before I made this video I had only done 1 round of 7531 during 4b mills.. I managed two quick rounds of 75314 mills in the video, i think... 7531 mills with the standard 3beat hand movement looks very difficult in the animator. I will probably tackle it someday. You?
@lessthanrich It's called jazz music, and lots of people really like it. Jazz music has been around much longer than the popular garbage of today which is often mistakenly referred to as "good music" ... I also like to use all instrumental tracks for my juggling videos sometimes. I think instrumental music fits better, because songs with lyrics usually are about girl problems and have nothing to do with juggling... I hope that clears things up for you :)
@ostialcantu watch my other channel, youtube/JugglingTricks. There are some tutorials there for several of the 3ball tricks in this video, and a tutorial for several of the 4b mess variations.
@thegoheads I'm with you, I also do not like "popular music" and I am well aware what jazz is.. But I was talking about the time signature... The music isn't on a 4:4 rhythm so the tricks don't fit with tune. That is all, kthxbai x
@RicotheJuggler haha, I do hope I win but the length of the video doesn't improve my chances. It's a random drawing of everyone who enters. I decided to go overboard with the content, because, well, that's kinda my thing, hehe.
I just remembered this video from years back and utterly amazed at how good it is. In so glad it's still here
Can't stop watching. Really inspiring video when learning mill's mess and variations. Thank you very much)
You sir, are the best juggler I've ever seen! Keep it up bro :D A true inspiration to watch so many variations at once, especially when I just learned the basic one :)
We're all one
oh baby... thanks so much for this one.
the music is so well chosen IMHO!!!
great sparkle in your eye.
I am just sitting here with my hand over my mouth speechless... BOOOOOOOM! unbelievable. how can your mind hold so many patterns! You are the Encyclopedia of ball juggling! and this is just Mills! Nice tricks. I liked a few a lot (18,27,56). Thank you for the tutorials, I'll check out some of them.
I knew the possible variations for three balls were endless... but THIS endless?
I like!
I'm glad someone finally commented positively about the music. This video has had several "good video, awful music" comments. I also really like this song and thought it fit the video quite well :) Thank you!
back for like the 50th time.... this is such a good video!!!!!!!
You're so amazing, man. Don't let anyone put you down.
And the juggling video of the year goes to...

the mill's mess master! those were some great patterns, nice job.
I am not sure how many times I have watched this video... I'm buying when we meet.
I get tired just watching this. Mesmerising.
I've watched this video so many times! A masterpiece for sure.
Love the 3 ball stuff. And the 4 ball stuff. And the 5 and 6 ball stuff too!!
steve,
i really appreciate the work that must have gone into making the video, and i'm sure there must have been a lot of work. you've done a great act for the juggling community as a whole. beyond just the video showing the skills, the cataloging and tutorial linking goes above and beyond what anyone could reasonably ask. thanks for posting this.

I can never get bored watching Steve Hogan juggling. Actually I would love to watch new videos.
Cheers mister Hogan. I hope you're doing well.
Thank you, glad people still enjoy this old video. I probably can't even do half these tricks anymore this video is nuts.
It's a 42333 mess variation. When the arms are crossed and you're doing the under-the-wrist throw/exchange, you sorta just do an extra exchange (42) with your arms still crossed then go back to mills (333). I hope that helps!
awesome video. Great music! You're very talented
I had to watch it again! Now I also want this music.
I didn't realize there were so many variations of mills mess!! Also, thanks for the very detailed description! This video must have taken a while =P
Unbelievable. So great.
awesome awesome awesome.That was phenomenal
This video inspired me to learn Mills Mess. Incredible, thanks for posting!
You are my hero! Just amazing stuff here--you rock.
That's a man who is serious about winning some rings!
im pretty sure this guy is an alien
really great!! impressive..got alot to learn now😂😂
This is really good, thanks for the upload and all the tutorials.
keep coming back to twist the knife a bit deeeeeeper.
so good, and all the reference work, a gift really.
Genius! A true inspiration, thank you!
i watched it twice and added it to my favorites to learn some patterns ...
Holy shit! Thanks 4 laying out the next 6 months of my juggling life!! Definitely favorited. Killin track too! Next time lets hear some Sun Ra! ;)
this is awesome. and i like arturo sandoval too ;).
Very fun to watch sir. May I just ask you two questions? One, how long have you been juggling for now and two, from what sources did you learn to do these tricks because as vast as youtube is it can be difficult to find very specific and rare tricks.
Epic old school pattern juggling!
Takeouts and box mess were the bomb
@meshunderlay I agree, some of these variations are very slight variations to the previous trick. Example, mills mess VS clawed mills mess. Takeouts VS clawed takeouts. all I have to say is ..... nothing I'm speechless Great Video !!!

My mind just exploded...
great music
Wow really nice!
@MassacreOlsztyn They were floating around in my memory banks, I wrote them all down before I filmed the video though. I do have a very long list of 3ball tricks somewhere, but it's very disorganized. My siteswap lists, however, are very organized!
Steve I'm speechless! No need to type any 3 to 5 ball mess patterns into the juggling lab applet because they are all in this video!
WOW !! that's a lott of variations :D
I enjoyed the video immensely, and it's only due to my sometimes-type-a-ways that I'll say this.... Some of the variations were only variations in the way that a Half Shower is a variation on a Cascade.
Of course, maybe I'm just tired, or jealous, or both, who knows?
Have you tried 7531 mills with the standard 3 beat mills mess hand movement?
WHAT A DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that was amazing, but are these all really variations of mill's mess? i thought some of those are separate from it
HOLY SHIT STEVE! you neverstop amazing me! crazy stuff in there especially like the multiplex stuff with 4,5 and 6 balls offcourse! when will you start on the actual 6 ball millsmess?? oh great music as well!!!

I think I'm answering my own question here but is it just a 423 mm variation?
Hey I like this video as well!
really sick
Great juggling vid. Can anyone kindly tell me what #26 is called?
@nomorepoetsplease Wow, thanks! I actually learned a lot of the tricks in this video from the tutorials that are linked to in the info box, so I suppose I'm just returning the favor by compiling them all together... These videos are a lot of work, but I enjoy it and I'm glad people find it helpful!

(sorry for the lenguage, i don't speak very good english...)
Looks great! And difficult :d
great juggling man
@JugglingForCake thanks butt i can do the windmil but i cant throw that underneath trhow throw above can you help ?
Your hands are well trained sir, I'm still a bit sloppy with the 4ball async fountain so surely can't do a mess on that :P Mike/Mill's working tho!
Do you remember all of these variations or you got a notebook with all of them described?
woooow you are a good juggler. Very good. XD
@mrpiano37 Hell yeah, Sun Ra is awesome! I'm sure I'll use some of his music in a video sooner or later.
Is there anyone out there that can equal or best your variations on mess? I find it hard to believe.
Super sir
You are amazing
Great video (and the music goes so well with it)!!
(According to an expert I saw on a tutorial, though, #80 is not a true 'traffic light'. ;8*).
I don't think that even Steve Mills knows how to do a half out what that guy had done
@1937528564, u 're sharp!
Loved the video, except for one thing... I was a bit dissapointed by the lack of 5b mm ground state variations. They were all multiplexes! :(
WRwizzerd u are one. But an evil one!!!! Just having a laff. Not being nasty.
Yes, but can you do the "cascade" variation???
JK. You are totally awesome.
@5bJuggla oh I dunno... I guess it's like a synchronous mills mess sorta... feels a bit like wimpy so I just wrote "wimpy mess" for brevity.
Guau re guau, es casi increivle, muy muy buenno
@JointDemise No. Before I made this video I had only done 1 round of 7531 during 4b mills.. I managed two quick rounds of 75314 mills in the video, i think... 7531 mills with the standard 3beat hand movement looks very difficult in the animator. I will probably tackle it someday. You?

Very good but it was mainly tricks and only some mills-mess variations about 50/50
BUENISIIIMOOO
@thegoheads No thanks, I have the flu and I'm not too excited about putting out another bedroom tricks video :P
great vid.. but what's with the music?
can you program that into my head too? :) please.
@ostialcantu watch my other channel, youtube/JugglingTricks. There are some tutorials there for several of the 3ball tricks in this video, and a tutorial for several of the 4b mess variations.
Bravo sir Bravo
@thegoheads I'm with you, I also do not like "popular music" and I am well aware what jazz is.. But I was talking about the time signature... The music isn't on a 4:4 rhythm so the tricks don't fit with tune. That is all, kthxbai x
