During this whole quarantine, I took it upon myself to learn about my tribal history, went out and went camas picking for the first time ever since I read it was a main source of food for my tribe. I re-learned to weave corn husk baskets, finished dyeing my porcupine quills and getting into quill work, I made it apparent to my family that we should take this time together to learn our language. We made it a rule in our house that we all use words we know in our conversations and our main goals is to be fluent by next year. so I say to you all : kiʔsuk kyukyit, ȼpuⱡwi?kiȼ ʔa·kq̓ⱡik̓amaⱡ, ȼxamaⱡ. (hello, be patient family, pray together)

Im learning the kotenai language since it is a rare language and is isolated meaning its like no other language in America (closest language they found that could be possibly related to kootenai is down in south America in the Amazon). Camas was mostly a polouse thing as kootenai's were not so strong about it. I try to incorporate both cultures for me since both culture are rare, polouse people are rarely mention in history books and have no federal recognition or even a reservation. But whats important is that I recognize these tribes that Im apart of (Im also navajo, nez perce, mojave, maracopia, and mohawk but I know my other family members are representing those tribes) So I strive to learn all about polouse /kootenai and represent them 😊
