I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Samsonova has the sweetest drop shots in the biz. When it's 6-5 30-15 and you ace two in a row for the victory against Naomi, that's called the perfect scenario ! Top shelf.

There is a lot of room for improvement in Naomi Osaka's play on clay courts, but I commend her for not running away from what she is not good at like before.
But I think her coach is not able to teach her the right clay court tactics for her.
She's not good at sliding footwork, so her footwork is worse on clay than on hard court.
For that reason, she needs to avoid being moved back and forth or side to side by her opponent, but she hits fast, flat shots cross court as usual, which allows her to be countered.
If she had the attacking power of Ostapenko, she could still take the initiative, but her flat shots on clay courts don't have that much power, so she'll need to step back, put some spin on the ball, and keep hitting without aiming too hard on the course until she can overpower it.

I don’t understand why Osaka still hasn’t added more variety to her game given now that she can be considered a seasoned player since coming on the tour. On clay this strategy is not going to work against the players who can mix things up, where are the dropshots, the slices, coming to the net? If all she ever does is being glued to the baseline and blistering shots, not coming forward nor change the pace of the rally with more variety, this surface is never going to be for her. The opponents' coaches have been closely studying Naomi, and they know that her weakness is dealing with drop shots. I've never seen so many drop shots played until now except Naomi's round 1 and round 2 of Madrid. Naomi even didn't bother to save those points. She really needs to work on that. And btw, I hate drop shots. They are like sneaky a** dirty points. Once from now and then would be fine, but then you continuously play those damn cards, it's ridiculous. But more importantly, Naomi and her team need to work on this if she wants to move further. Exhibit A, look at Swiatek, powerful backhand and forehand and, most of all, she covers the whole damn ground, even drop shots.

Generally, the women are not as good as the men. I'm not talking about physicality; I mean in skill. Usually women have a few big weapons, and that's it. They're not all-around good, which is why there's no clear hierarchy in the women's game.
The men, on the other hand, are good at EVERYTHING, so, there's a real pecking-order where the same players dominate for YEARS.
The most complete tennis players I think I have seen are POST-2011 Serena Williams and Justine Henin.
I actually don't think Graff was great all-around. Her forehand was so monstrous that she bulldozed everyone else.
      TL:DR
Women are not as skilled as the men, all-around, so even the best players in the world have trouble with basic techniques. This does not mean they can never be as skilled, it just that they don't HAVE to be as skilled. Look at Sara Errani, for example...

    • @DogLover-qt7gj
      @DogLover-qt7gj 6 месяцев назад +1

@@Leomerya12 Yeah I disagree with most of this. First there is a clear hierarchy in the women game. Just check the rankings or who are winning the big titles. Secondly Errani DOES have skill. You don't get to five in the world without skills. It's just that her skills weren't the textbook skills for top tennis players aka powerful serve, big groundstrokes, etc. Her skills were having a high tennis IQ, having a lot of variety, she was great with drop shops, volleying, net play, etc. In her prime she also moved pretty well. So she had plenty of skills.
Having said that her obvious flaws in her game kept her from ever winning a big title. The flaws being a hilariously bad serve and not enough power on her ground strokes to keep big hitters from rushing her. Pretty similar to Daria Kasatkina. But Errani in her prime was better because all of her variety.
Also disagree that the men are great at everything. The best three men players we've ever seen was Federer, Nadal & Djokovic. The three of three combined to win almost every big title for 15 + years but they had weakness despite that. So you can only imagine the weakness of the other guys.
Nadal - For years he used to just spin his serve in with no power on it. He improved it a lot of the years but he never get it to the point where it was a weapon. Also his backhand while not a true weakness there were plenty of periods where it wasn't great either.
Federer - we all remember how badly Nadal used to pick on his backhand and the crazy amount of errors Federer would make on it
Novak - Similar to Nadal he spent many year where his serve wasn't a weapon. Also he spent a long portion of his career not have much variety in his game. Heck the guy never figured out how to hit a proper smash.
And these are the three greatest players EVER.
I could do the same for the women. I've never seen a player that didn't have weakness. Iga Swiatek is probably the closest. But even she has weakness hence she doesn't win every match. But Iga has some many strengths no one can consistently exploit her weaknesses. Similarly to how 80% of the tour couldn't exploit Errani weaknesses in her prime but at a much higher level. And that's the key. No one has ever been great at everything and that includes the three greatest MEN players ever.

I don’t want to spread any hate but why is Osaka having such a big reputation from fans overall? I will never understand it. Her tennis is so one-sided, inconsistent and honestly overrated in retrospective compared to her former number one ranking + 4 GS-titles.

It is not uncommon for her to play matches like today's, but her play when she wins a Grand Slam is so amazing that she could win against anyone, and if you saw it in real time, you'll definitely be a fan of her.
Also, the gap between her strength in tennis and her shy and humble personality is probably one of the reasons why people like her so much.

she won 4 slams but she isnt charismatic like Carlos so Japan being a huge economy, her being half black in woke America is enough. look Coco got attention just based on her skin color automatic Serena comparisons.

Look at Samsonova's body and conditioning. If Osaka put that much care and attention into her training she would be back to her best.

Mixing tennis and motherhood never works! You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

What a stupid thing to repeat. Respect our women!! The ladies that are able to still play professionally after childbirth should be celebrated since OF COURSE it takes a toll on your physique. Yet we still have women able to play professionally, so stop being so disgusting. My God some tennis fans are the absolute worst! Just go away if all you have to say is rubbish about the match and players. No class.

Well, it worked for Kim Clijsters; she won the US Open after having a baby. I think it depends more on the time of life when you have the baby and just how much time you are willing to devote to tennis after giving birth.

Osaka has a big serve and powerful groundstrokes, but she doesn't seem to be much of a thinking player.

You're disgusting. Say what you want to say. Hiding behind a dog whistle is pathetic. Say it, you coward. Want to MakeTennisGA? Go back to the days of Margaret Court when the game had 'class' and no Williams sisters, and no Arther Ashe's? Yet here you are with your no class comments. Just say it, it will be cleansing to your soul.

The "Returning Mom" label is turning into a curse... 🤔 - who woulda thought?
Much is talked about her coach... but coaching her must be a nightmare! Imagine you're her coach and tell her do this - and she replies "I'm a mom"....
