Sean Baker is so going to cast that kid in a movie. He sounds like a Sean Baker character. Oscar tracker here! So the correlation with the TIFF People’s choice isn’t necessarily that it’ll win best picture, but that it’ll win screenplay, and most likely be nominated for best picture. American Fiction and Coda were both recent examples of this where people went, “Those aren’t Oscar movies” and they went on to win the Oscar’s, Coda won Best Picture even. But that was a year where there was no movie that people were super passionate about. And Anora and Sing Sing seem to both have devoted people behind them. The Substance also seems to have a growing faction of people wanting it to happen despite the genre bias.
We talked about this on the TIFF Recap pod but the previous 12 People’s Choice winners were all nominated for Best Picture (with 3 winning) so there’s a pretty strong trend there. But yes, totally agree that a movie doesn’t necessarily have to “feel” like an Oscars movie in order to contend. We also compared Life of Chuck to Coda on that last podcast.
instigating it was commented i’m still here doesn’t seems true story but for people in latin america is extremely believable because we hear about similar stories that several families pass though during military dictatorships from late 60s to 80s
What movie from TIFF are you most excited to see?
Michael 😂😂 my kid he had a blast...
“I’m still here” is my favourite at tiff this year from Water Salles
Can't wait to catch up with it, I don't think I've heard a negative reaction to I'm Still Here yet!
As the Michael mentioned, my thought on Anora is it is amazing, but Red Rocket still the greatest film of all time!
So glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for helping to make our TIFF more fun!
Not Tiff related but will you guys see Look Back? The animated movie. Gkids releasing it in October.
It’s on the radar! Hopefully we’ll get to it by the October 7th/14th streams.
Seeing "The Substance" on Tuesday!
It's a gnarly one! Hope you enjoy
