Regarding the time signature, the verse is in 7/4, and the chorus in 6/8. This is hands down my favorite Ozzy song. Indeed, it is a metal masterpiece.

I get a little misty eyed, sometimes, realizing that this is the last song on the last studio record that Randy ever played on... and it was absolutely epic!
    He was a shooting star!
I can't even begin to imagine what Randy's next record would've sounded like!

I got to see Randy in concert a month before he died. He’s the reason I took up classical guitar lessons. It tore me up when I hear the tragic news. (S.A.T.O. - Sharon Arden Thelma Osbourne. Some say it as, Sail Across The Ocean)
And yes, the rest of the album is epic. Just when you thought Blizzard of Oz was epic, along comes Diary, even more epic. These by far are Ozzy’s best masterpieces with huge thanks to the Late Great Randy Rhoads and of course, Bob Daisley on Bass and Lee Kerslake on drums. This line up was when all the planets and stars in space aligned. Then tragedy struck. R.I. P. Randy. And later, losing Lee Kerslake R.I.P.

I was 10yrs old when this album came out. My uncle bought it for me, but I had to sneak it into the house in a Conway Twitty album sleeve so my mom didnt freak out....anyway...This is when Ozzy was still considered an absolute madman and menace to society. This song felt so believable to me. It freaked me out, but I absolutely loved it. Still listening to it now, 40+ yrs later with my kids.
Edit: If you want to check out an odd, but great one from Ozzy, listen to "So Tired" off Bark at the Moon. Its so damn good.

I was fortunate enough to see Ozzy's Diary of a Madman tour on February 5, 1982 (I still have the ticket stub) just 6 weeks before Randy died. Randy was just mesmerizing to watch. What an amazing player. I was 15 years old at the time, and that show remains my etched on my memory. Diary is my favorite Ozzy album. That whole era was just incredible. The music still gets me excited!

I've seen a couple thousand live music performances so far in this life. Seeing Randy, Rudy, Tommy and Ozzy play this song live on this tour (just a few months before Randy was killed) will always remain one of the most memorable. That outro for Diary filled the 17,000 seat arena and swirled around the entire hall, then climbed into my head. That was 1981 and it's still swirling around up there.
Since then I've seen Ozzy live more times than I can remember. The only thing close to that event, was seeing him a year later at the US Festival with a crowd of over 400,000 people. By the time he got half way through Revelation Mother Earth, he had tears streaming down his face. He was overcome with the concept of playing before that many people, just a few short years after his career was by all accounts over.
Randy was special and I'm incredibly fortunate to have seen him play at that time.

While Over the Mountain is what made me buy the album back in 82 , I grew to love every song . But what stands out to me some 40+ years later is the lead work on You cant kill rock n roll. Randys guitar the tonel, the notes, the bends, the sounds, the nuances sounds like his guitar is csreaming for help at times, to this day i picture him standing there with his foot one some incredible wah pedal, sure dont sound like a crybaby, sound like literally a wah from hell , & its so good. The periodic high frequency feedback, almost like a mic feedback. ..... Anywy yeh whole album is awesome but for me You cant kill rock n roll really makesa me feel someething & its mainly due to Randys tone & playing. Just accents teh song & takles it to much higher places.

This song is a masterpiece composed by the late great legendary Randy Rhoads. Ozzy had very little to do if anything with this album except for sang the Lyrics
that were written by Bob Daisley. And vocal melodies were provided by Lee Kerslake.. Ozzy diddnt even know what to think of this when he heard it. Because of the lyrics and time signature changes he diddnt understand. And it has to be explained to him. This was composed and recorded in about 2 weeks because of the push of jet records . Randy felt rushed and wished he had more time and wasn't really happy with the end product. Long live the legacy of Randy Rhoads who will be inspiring generations forever with his greatness.

@JohnSlopReacts your very welcome. I just always try to set the record straight so credit goes where it should. Not to cut down Ozzy. He has a very distinct voice and is a legendary frontman. But the only reason he has the status he does today is because of the talent that he has surrounded himself with over the years. After fired from Sabbath he was a washed up addict. And had very little chances of resurrecting his career because he diddnt have any say or Input with Sabbath, couldn't play an instrument, and really diddnt know how music worked besides singing lyrics written by others. If it wasn't for Dana strum and Randys mom Delores finally persuading Randy to go audition.( Randy diddnt want to because he had 60 students a week and was in Quiet Riot that was his baby that he started at 16) ozzy wouldn't be what we know today. And he knows it. That's why at his recent RRHOF induction for his solo Career he said "if I had never met a guy by the name of Randy Rhoads, I don't think I would be sitting here right now" . - Ozzy Osbourne. I was so happy to see Randy was inducted 3 years before ozzy under the musical excellence catagory. I was surprised that they really got it right. But there was pressure from other musicians to make it happen.

This song is truly a masterpiece. The band was at their peak. I
Ozzys vocal were phenomenal. Randy’s guitars, starting with the continual changes in time signatures set the stage for the songs theme. Then moving from haunting to moments of clarity, and anger, frustration.
This is just one of the massive reasons Randy is still so influential for guitar players. Even over 40 years after his death. He literally put out these two albums in less than a year with Ozzy. And poof he was gone.
I’m glad younger generations are able to see the freaking master musicianship of this album and song

I was 15 when this came out. It was a life changing event then and still is to this day. Ozzy is a force in the world of Metal. I would suggest watching his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The intro by Jack Black sums it up really well. The only thing better than being there in "81" is seeing today "Kids" loving it like we did in a distant yesterday's.

Imagine being a senior in high school when the album came out. My vinyl copy of this album is very worn. It's indeed an epic album and this particular track is the pinnacle. I've found no songs that can follow it, regardless of artist or era. But I think the request to play both songs was intended to mean together, in order. Together, in order, S.A.T.O. is like two volleyball players, the first tipping it in the air, then the second one spiking it. S.A.T.O. leaves you wanting, and and Diary provides a response to which there is no counter. You have to listen to them together in sequence to get the full (and likely intended) effect.

Ozzy had little to do with the composition and recording of this song. Randy, Bob and Lee were the principal writers of the music. Lee wrote the lyrics. The three of them were given carte blanche in the studio. Ozzy only came in when it was time to record vocals. When Ozzy first heard the arrangement, he had no idea how to put a vocal line to it and remarked, "Who do you think I am? Frank Zappa?"

Correct. Except that Bob Daisley wrote the Lyrics. Lee wrote the vocal melody.

An amazing tune that scared the hell out of me in concert... back when the album toured with Gillis.
It just occurred to me that this is a perfect bookend to the original Black Sabbath opening song.
In 68 a scared, stoned young hippie with a figure in black pointing at him is now - 12 years later - doomed.

The one who wrote the lyrics for this one wasn't Ozzy actually but Bob Daisley who had a bout with mental issues when he was 16 years old. By the time this song was released, Bob was 30. So this song talks about Bob and him thinking be was losing his mind. Also hence the odd time signature in the song making the listener question what he/she's hearing thinking that there's something wrong here, something isn't as it should be and this was done deliberately with the recording the song.

The time signature in the verse is 7/4 and prechorus is 3/4. 4/4 in the bridge before the solo.
