@@yoursnatchedweave641 Idols usually have a cute, fashionable, or otherwise "pretty" aesthetic. Having a manly inkfish idol would be severely out of place, both as an idol and as a Splatoon character.
Tbh I don’t think one male inkling or octoling idol would hurt in my opinion but I understand why you don’t want it. (I’ve been thinking like a brother & sister idol group for example lol)
as a lesbian i really dont see the need to gatekeep female casts. the splatoon fandom is HEAVILY female and lgbt dominated as it is and a male idol/idol group wouldnt change a thing. i dont see why variety would be a bad thing when im certain a male idol or two wouldnt change the status quo. i personally would love some male inkfish idols! like i said, i like variety in casts, and i already headcanon agent 3 and 8 as male. i think male idols would just be a nice addition to that
Insane how much more favoured male characters are in fandoms than female ones. I've seen multiple people say they straight up do not like female characters and refuse to write about them and everyone be completely fine with it, but when I admit how I tend to enjoy female characters and f/f ships more than male ones everyone starts going "I mean you do you but like are you biased???" and I have to assure everyone that no, I'm not sexist. That being said I would like a male inkfish idol, mostly for some vocal variety. Poor Big Man gets so drowned out in songs if he gets to sing at all. And I feel like a lot of the reason male characters are so popular is because of the sheer obsession with m/m ships in fandom, which if there's only one then I doubt we'll really see. Sure he could maybe be shipped with Big Man or the other male characters that aren't old geezers, but they aren't humanoid and like you said that makes it harder for people to see them in more human dynamics, especially shipping. That or they'll have no choice but to have a straight ship or to not ship him at all. The horror.
what i thought would be interesting (and is an idea im vaguely adapting for an idol group in my fanfic) is a group of 4 idols, but instead of 4 teams for splatfests as youd kinda expect since splat3 did 3-way splatfests, we return to 2 teams, and each team is backed by 2 of the idols. or, hell, maybe on occasion there IS a 3-way splatfest, and the idol split is 2 vs 1 vs 1. either way, more idols than there are splatfest teams. this spices things up a bit for that subsection of people who just choose their fest team based on the idol(s) they like, as now theres multiple per team, with the potential of ONE of those idols being one you arent too hot about. it also spices up the character interactions, because imagine two of the idols being particularly good friends or sumn and choosing different teams and just being SO dramatic about it. or maybe on one occasion 3 of the idols backing one team and the lone idol on the other side being like 'GUYS WHAT THE HECK YOURE LEAVING ME HANGING?????' i just think itd be funny
With this, we could also see more tournament/bracket-style Splatfests, like the TMNT and Sanrio ones in Splatoon 2. Each member of each pair could represent their own team (starting with 4 teams total), then each pair reps the winner of the first round and the two teams/idol pairs compete against each other.
This is a really interesting take on the matter! Plus I love the Bugsnax music. Personally, from a design perspective, I think a male inkfish idol is inevitable. Every idol group (except Callie and Marie, being the first) has had a hook that initially distinguishes them from their predecessors - Off the Hook had Marina being an Octoling, and Deep Cut were a trio instead of a duo. A group having the first humanoid male idol would be a major selling point to the fandom, and it's not just limited to male characters! One of the main discussion around Deep Cut at their reveal was the excitement at the possibility of Shiver being our first non-binary idol. (And people love Acht!) There's another point about the observed preferential treatment about male characters in shipping I'm surprised you didn't mention, and that's the Agent 24 pairing. For the deeper Splatoon fandom that will likely experience that shift you talked about, the agents are on par with the idols in terms of popularity and representation in fanworks. The most popular Splatoon MxM pairing is Male Agent 24, which is absolutely and undeniably dwarfed by it's Femslash counterpart. Obviously, it's helped by the pushing of the female agents in official media (although the male agents really aren't as much of a second thought as people say they are lmao), but that option for the more 'typical fandom conventional' male pairing is there, yet the female pairing dominates in every instance. I decided to look on AO3, and while it isn't as clear due to the Agent pairing tags not being labelled as M/M or F/F (or M/F or non-binary), scrolling through the tag for a few pages, F/F was the majority by far. The developers have been very explicit with their wishes to prioritise female characters, and as a woman/lesbian I adore that. It's nice to have a semi-mainstream fandom where we're the majority for once, and I don't think one or two pretty boys will alter the fandom forever. If anything, nothing will ever touch Pearlina as the fandom's favourite pairing lol. Despite the fandom only getting bigger since it's introduction, it still reigns supreme above anything Splatoon 3 has introduced.
i'm not in the splatoon fandom, but i am into proseka. while it is true that the boys are popular, i really don't think that it's fair to say they are unfairly favored by the fandom? you did say this in the video, ao3 is not reeeally a great way to measure this. because 95% of fics are going to be based on a ship, and characters you like shipping don't always automatically line up with who your favorite characters are. shipping is only a part of fandom, and while i will completely give you that bl pairings are most popular in almost any fandom with more than one named male character, ship content is not the end all-be all, and, using pjsk for example, female characters still get the love they deserve in other other spots. what's interesting to me is that you named your concern as the addition of male characters threatening a female-lead fandom. i can't say anything for splatoon, but in proseka, cookie run, and other ips you showed like genshin and bnha* (*in its case, male characters being most popular has more to do with having all male leads and with its author hardly ever writing female characters with as much care), female fans pretty dominantly *are* the ones giving so much attention to the male characters, especially when it comes to shipping content. a female-dominated fandom is most of the time also a straight female dominated fandom, straight women like hot boys, and many straight women (particularly in fandom) like when hot boys kiss. male characters in proseka specifically, my area of expertise, are not popular because of male fans, but because teen weeb girls like colorful twinks. i'm getting the idea that what you really value is a fandom not just dominated by female fans, but by wlw (and/or straight women who are girl's girls), like my personal example, pretty cure, and what splatoon seems to be to you. which is completely fair, and awesome! this is all to say, adding one (1) squidboy idol will be safe as long as you don't give him a boyfriend. (in all seriousness, i hope this wasn't confrontational, i just wanted to give my irrelevant unimportant thoughts. feel free to completely disregard.) also also, proseca honestly feeds the gl lovers more (which probably has more to do with female friendships in japanese culture but i'm choosing to believe in the gay), just look at the trained "time for a decisive battle" an card. the closest thing to anything that queer for any guy is akito ruffling toya's hair- and i'm all for it. lets go lesbians!!!
Really good comment, thanks for leaving it. I think I should have been more specific in saying a female *character* led fandom. Bringing up the genders of creators wasn’t something I intended to do here, though I can see how it comes across that way. I’m definitely more of an outsider in the prosekai fandom too, so I’m glad to see dome insight from someone closer to the front lines, so to speak.
@@mahimeghan i might've misinterpreted a little lol. i totally understand and support wanting to be in a fandom where girls characters are the stars of conversation! i wish all [splatoon enjoyers] a very [cute squid girls]
this is a really intriguing take! i knew pjsk would be brought up in the ao3 portion, there are only 4 guys excluding vocaloids and yet they surpass every other ship
i dont get why this is a debate at all, personally i would love to see some male idols a boy band would be cool to see, i gen dont think the gender of the idols should rlly be an issue
Also about the male characters YOU CAN MAKE ALL THE AGENTS MALE Are the default options female? Yes. But YOU play as them, therefore you can make them male if you want, or non binary Also you can make whatever fan fiction with them cuz the agents are the player characters
Exactly, all of them are important characters who can be male or female. Captain 3 and Agent 8 even get almost as much or as much showings of them as males as they do their female counterparts. Neo 3 gets a fair amount of male showings, but not as much mostly just due ot the fact that Neo 3 isn't just male/female versions, it's more like two completely different characters and personalities. Agent 4? Just gets almost nothing for the male version though. Makes no sense why, but we've only ever gotten one official showing/art piece of them as a man, and it wasn't even a colored drawing.
i think, if nintendo could do it right, nintendo making a cephalopod male idol wouldnt change alot. since every idol group is different from the last, off the hook having an octoling, marina, and deep cut being a trio. i understand where youre coming from, but i think an all-male idol group (or one more relevant male cephalopod). to clear, i totally enjoy the female lead of splatoon, and i want it to stay that way. i just think it would perhaps be beneficial to have a male humanoid idol thanks for reading my yap session bye
Someone in the comments suggested a sister-brother duo and I considered that if the brother is younger it might be a good compromise. I really like that Splatoon made the cephalopods androgynous, which gives the opportunity for them to break gender roles. A cute little brother with a big and emancipated big sister sounds very interesting to me.
@@derultimativenachahmer74 The cephalopods aren't androgynous though, they're split into male and female like normal with differences between them unique to them still
Precisely. Considering that I've been around the splatoon community since 2018, I'm not as attached to the concept of obligatory female idols as most veterans. Splatoon 3's biggest issue wasn't it was too different from Splatoon 1 and 2 but that it was too similar in some aspects and didn't fully commit to the theme of chaos.
i don’t get it… how can having a bunch of women idols be stale? does it really matter? would any splatoon idol suddenly be more interesting if they were a man?
@@_BubblGum_so, you’re agreeing that the sustainable women majority does matter but then go on to ask if it really matters whether or not they add a male idol
@@_BubblGum_ Female idols aren't stale, persay, just repetitive. I should've phrased my comment a little more specifically. Sorry if you were offended by it.
I don't think decisions about the game'as development should be made based on how the fandom will react. People are allowed to wanna see themselves in the game and asking for a male idol isn't saying they don't want female idols.
^^^ also worth noting that people who want a male idol aren't necessarily guys who want to see themselves, it also just includes girls who like cute boys
I don’t think game developers should make games based on how they believe fandoms will react, either. I simply bring it up because fandom is central to how I process media.
I feel like many people who consume m/m pairings are fujoshi women, so while I agree with your point about male character dominance/popularity in fandom spaces, I don't think slash pairings are going to attract many men that aren't already interested in the series. Splatoon's fanbase has already established itself as both very women-lead and LGBTQ+ friendly; it would take more than a couple of characters to change that. If anything, I feel like having only having conventionally attractive female idols (considering that Big Man is more comedic while the other 6 are meant to be cute and pretty) is doing more to attract male players than having a conventionally attractive male one.
I wouldn’t mind having an all-male idol group. We’ve had 2 idol groups that are all-female so far. There has been 1 male idol, alongside 2 female idols, but big man barely got any attention in the game. I think a new all-male idol group would be a nice change of pace. Plus, SQUID/OCTOPUS YAOI!!
@ got neglected. 1. He barely had any lines in songs (yeah, yeah, he did the instrumentals, but he should still get more lines.) 2. Was part of deep cut, the idol group that was only in one of the splatoon story modes, which they got sidelined on.
finally a video that summarizes exactly how I feel! Gaming spaces tend to be so unwelcoming to women and it extends to fandoms too, so playing Splatoon and being in the fandom feels like a breath of fresh air. It's a shame most of the male idol discussion stems from people diminishing the stronghold male-centered fanworks have in fandoms and the completely fair concerns of how it could impact Splatoon's fandom
I don't think this is anything to worry about, mostly due to Japan's fascination with idols, specifically young female idols. The idols in the Splatoon franchise are largely based on popular trend of idols in Japan, they're basically young female pop stars that the crowd there (as far as I know) go gaga over. To my knowledge, this specific niche of pop culture performers is predominately female, and there has never been a male star who would be considered an "idol". There are male singers and performers with plenty of star power, sure, but they're not referred to as "idols". You'll also notice that the male octolings you mentioned in your examples aren't really solo acts, but are members of a band. So the question of whether or not we'll get a male inkling/octoling idol in Splatoon rests more on Japanese pop culture, on whether the female idol craze in Japan starts to stagnate and male stars get more of a chance to shine
now you know how women feel with practically every franchise ever! (i don’t mean this in a rude way but i really don’t know how to make it sound nicer.)
@@_BubblGum_ Males don't have to be majority or equal just a couple. Also there are many male minorities like black male. But your probs white so you didn't think about that.
If the were to be a male idol id DEFINITELY want him to either me really girly pop but is EXTREMELY in love with his partner idol so she is still in the spotlight
i don’t care what everyone says, they don’t understand how male-driven fandom culture is. if we have a male idol, he is all the fandom will talk about. two male idols? we’ll have to deal with 100x more annoying “yaoi” jokes! i love that splatoon is a franchise with a ton of female leads. it is one of the only mainstream games like that. it would be nice if we could keep it that way. if you want a tumblr sexyman just find another game.
despite me not being in the splatoon fandom (but seen my fair share of any fandom's views of men), i completely agree with your statement! i've always had a feeling that women especially in media were always meant to be a supporting side character for the main male character and it is always a shocker when it is the female characters that are dominating a fandom. tbh, i feel like they should get the same treatment; although, more points to the women recognition right now to first balance the scale. also more lgtbtq+ characters when...
not to be rude but i think we are grasping at straws a bit. personally i want male humanoid idols because inkling boy was always my favorite playable character and i choose male for agent 8 as well. i was honestly kind of disappointed when i realized their were no humanoid male characters who make appearances in the game besides cuttlefish which barely counts. don't get me wrong i wouldn't loose any sleep if we just get another female duo or trio but its just something I've wanted for a long time now and i just don't see how it would change the fandom around the series.
while there isn't a lack of representation in the majority of media for men, there is somewhat a lack of this in the Splatoon series (in terms of characters), which happens to be a game series amongst the favorites of certain people (myself included). I can't relate to the reasoning given in the end section of your video directly, but I can definitely sympathize with your position. fandom activity and statistics from other games should not get in the way of adding to the diversity of flagship characters, especially with a series as unique as this. it feels very unlikely that the addition of an amount of male characters will detract any significant amount from the experience of the fandom, and certainly not more so that the positives that are gained from broader representation. to exemplify my personal thoughts, was playing MGRR a while ago and when I was reminded of the existence of Jetstream Sam, I immediately thought it would be so cool to see a character that reminded me of him in Splatoon's main cast. adding new interesting characters to the game shouldn't be decided by attention-based gender competition. I disagree with your take on this discussion, but I appreciate you voicing your concern based on your personal experience. as a side note, I don't at all support or agree with what that guy at the Nintendo shareholder meeting was saying, since he was talking about an issue that doesn't actually exist. even if it was an actual issue with the game, it would still be eclipsed by the plethora of actual issues the series has.
splatoon initially wasn't going to have inkling boys as an option i really appreciate seeing women, especially women of color, taking lead and i hope this does not change
To me Big Man is perfect and I don't think I could want anything more from a male Splatoon idol. Him being the BIG manta that he is never really made him feel less human to me. If they did do another male idol I think it would be really cool if they put Cap'n Cuttlefish and/or DJ Octavio in that role.
While I personally think a male humanoid idol would be awesome, I can definitely understand the concerns of the fandom making everything about him. Splatoon is a rare case where WLW ships are by far the most popular within the fandom, and while I can plead for a cute squid/octo boy to gush over all I want, there are practically thousands of other franchises where men are front and center. Take the main fandom I'm in, Star Fox. That series is highly male dominated in terms of its characters and fanbase. It's actually fairly uncommon to find fellow female Star Fox fans, even in online spaces. I tried the AOE challenge with said series and found that Fox x Krystal, a straight pairing, was the most common ship. The very close second (And I mean close as in less than 5 fics of a difference) was of course, Wolf x Fox. The only WLW pair I could find on the list at all was Miyu x Fay and even that was fairly low down. One of the ships further down on the list was Krystal x OC. Only 2 of the 15 fics I could find through looking in that tag were marked as WLW (I was surprised I'd find any at all) and the rest of them had male OCs. In the end, I'd love to see a male humanoid idol in Splatoon, but I won't start throwing bricks at Nintendo's headquarters if they continue making their idols almost completely female led. As I've mentioned earlier, I can always just stick with Star Fox or almost any other franchise to satisfy my need for cute male characters. P.S: I know this is slightly unrelated but... (deep breath in) 🗣🗣🗣 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A NEW STAR FOX GAME NINTENDO I'M BEGGING YOU IT'S BEEN 7 YEARS SPLATOON GOT 2 NEW SEQUELS ON THE SWITCH CAN'T STAR FOX GET JUST ONE NEW GAME THAT ISN'T A CAMEO OR A VIRTUAL CONSOLE PORT WE'VE ALREADY SEEN ON OTHER CONSOLES HECK I'D EVEN TAKE ANOTHER RETELLING OF THE LYLAT WARS STORY OR EVEN A PORT OF ADVENTURES OR ASSAULT PLEASE JUST ANYTHING I'M STARVING AAAAAJJGRKRGK (exhale) Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
7:21 If we're going to start like this, then, excluding the manga, every time a Inkling girl or Octoling girl appears, on a large cover of a game cover, in commercials whenever a female Inkling appears, in crossovers the female Inkling is always prioritized, in the Octo expansion the protagonist of the DLC is a female Octoling, in Side Order it's a female Octoling, in the 3 Splatoon sagas, they have always been female Idols, and now, in a single Splatoon manga where the boys star more, does it offend you? Does it bother you? Really? Male voices are very beautiful, and even more so in Japanese ones, they can bring out a lot of potential in them, and also, because a male idol comes out, nothing has to change, neither in music, nor in the Fandom nor in anything. But what you say in that image of the manga "not a woman", are you really not satisfied with everything that Splatoon encompasses that you seek to monopolize more? I have no words😶
Exactly, as a female myself I want to see more male idols, as much as I love female idols I want to see more change and this women seems to be allergic to change and also act like its gonna change so much when in reality no one will give a shit. This fandom is ridiculous I feel embarrassed to be apart of it.
@Saps.0 Exactly, she doesn't see what this person doesn't want. I like female idols too but I'm tired of this priority to female idols and discrimination against men, because it's like going many years ago but in reverse, and I think that both women and men are equally valid, there are very good mixed groups and incredibly fantastic male groups. But this person seems to not see the Squid Sisters, off the hook or deep cut. There are also groups like "Ink theory", a female group and it seems that this youtuber doesn't take it into account either and names H2Whoa and Sashimori as having Octoling boys, it seems absurd to me. If it bothers so much that there are boys in the game, they should have only played female characters and voila (although I would still see discrimination against men)
@t.d.c397 yeah and EVERY story modes shown character is always female on official art so we don't even see male agents too. People like her are selfish as hell, if this game only had male idols everyone would call it sexist so why can't we say that about not having male idols...
I used to think almost exactly like this, if you asked me beginning of splat 3 I would have said yeah we dont NEED male idols no do I reallg want one. But now, after grand fest. My curiosity with how a humanoid male idol would play out over rides my normal boredom from everyday male characters! Especially since splat 1 lore once made it seem like male octolings wasnt common. So if we base winning splafest as the main theme for splat 4 I can see the potential of a popular male octoling standing out story wise (amd why they would be an idol) All in all, as a bi women, Im very pleased with how splatoon currently is. Its refreshing to have so many females as poster characters, but if there happened to be a main male humanoid idol next game I wouldnt be mad XD Zesty obnoxious idol because hes a rare male octoling (before great the turf war) would be so funny ngl
i understand your verdict but i think its rather silly to base it off of fandom reactions. fandoms like boys, its just a fact. you cant avoid it by banning males in the splatoon idol universe. i think itd be a breath of fresh air to have an inkling fella! its gonna get boring after a while seeing just another girl and another girl. shake things up, invite change! he doesnt need to steal the spotlight but it could be nice. As a trans man, it would be nice to see a male idol in game that i could possibly relate to.
I'm a trans guy too and this is EXACTLY what I am saying. Trans guys are VERY underrepresented that even if the male idol was not trans, I'd have someone to relate to. I'd have someone I could see myself in. I'd have someone to change my pfp too. At least one male inkfish idol would be enough for me. The fandom LOVE the female idols of the series, so having one male wouldn't automatically make the fandom favor him.
My only reason I don’t want male idols is because I want cute girls singing and dancing on my screen, that’s it, thank you for coming to my TED talk **bow**
You may not intend to gatekeep, but that's how it's coming off. Don't get me wrong, I love the female-dominated cast, but as a masc-presenting enby, I want to be able to see myself in important characters in one of my favorite series, and I just... can't, and shouldn't want that? Because some random people on the Internet said so? I hear you, I see you, I understand you, and I feel almost punched because of it. Adding one humanoid idol isn't going to cause the issues you think it will. People will get excited because we finally have a male inkfish idol (similar to how they did with Big Man), and then it'll probably go back to normal. Plus, Pearlina will prevent the shippers from getting too out of hand with shipping him with another male character.
ive seen an interesting take that i want to bring up. in splatoon 3, gender presentation was more regarded as a style than anything else. so what if the new group just changed style every now and then? some days fem, some days masc, not every member has to do the same thing on the same days. nintendo likely would never but it would be neat i think
Okay so I've watched the video and also read some of the comments and I would like to say just a couple things. I love the female representation that Splatoon has, if anything It's what makes Splatoon, well Splatoon. It's the very core of the game and that should not change. but the lack of male leads needs to change for a couple reasons. In terms of the music in Splatoon, there should be no reason why having a male idol should be a bad thing because there are already bands that we mostly hear in game that are males singing so why should it matter if it's a male idol is singing. shoot big man sings during some of deep cut's songs so why is no one complaining about that. It just feels very unfair. Splatoon is very LGBTQ welcoming and that is a well-known fact but not only females are a part of that group. Males are a part of it too so we should include them so then those people can have someone that can represent them. Idols would be a good way to do that considering they are the main people you see in everyone Splatoon game. When we think of male representation, we think that it is mainly driven by males. However sometimes that is not always the case. If we looked at the other fandoms you chose for this video, you would see that most of those communities are mainly driven by females. those females give the male characters more attention. Therefore, making them more popular than the female characters. But that's just on THOSE fandoms for doing that. THOSE fandoms made the males more popular. My point is just in Splatoon we need more male idols maybe just 1 or 2 wouldn't hurt and no one should be butt hurt about it. With a game so heavy on having female leads I think it could be a cool thing to see another male lead other than big man, that way everyone can have someone to represent them. I love this game no matter if it has more male idols or not, I just don't see the problem with having more males in it. I know that all of this may just be my own opinion, but I feel like it needed to be addressed. Thank you for reading, here's a cookie! 🍪:D
This is why I hate the Splatoon fandom, non of you are open to change and you all make out that a male idol is going to change the whole game, we have so many female idols. One or two male idols won't hurt anything, get a grip- this is coming from a female aswell.
I completely agree with your statement! I’m happy splatoon embraces female leads, and I would hope it would continue to be that way as much as possible! From my experience in the fandom, I feel like people only want male idols to thirst over them, especially when there’s lots of weird comments about yaoi or the character in general (spike, rider, emperor, and dj Octavio for specific examples). I cannot see a reason as to why we need male inkling/octoling idols without being totally weird about it? There is nothing wrong with having females singing in songs and I feel like a male wouldn’t change that much to a song either way? However I’m not opposed to having one male idol for the new group since I feel like it wouldn’t overshadow the rest as much.
No. I'm kind of tired of people saying it's just thirsty women who want a male idol. I'm a trans guy. I want a male inkfish idol because it's a way to see myself in the series. Even if the idol isn't trans or wtv, I would still be very happy because I have an idol I can actually change my pfp to
@ again it’s just from what I’ve seen, I know not everyone who wants male idols are part of that side of the fandom. I understand where you are coming from tho, it would be nice to have a male idol!
THE WAY I HAD ALREADY WRITTEN A COMMENT ABT PROSEKA B4 U BROUGHT IT UP LOLLL its so dire in that fandom that it even made me actively repulsed by those male charas.. i have absolute zero faith that the same wouldnt happen in splatoon.. as an aside for proseka, the situation with the most popular female character in the west is super sus too bc shes heavily implied to be a trans girl, but the same fans that talk pretty much exclusively about the male characters also include her in that bunch so its like.. hmm
I dont really understand this much man,,,,, all im really getting from this is "i dont want male idols because i dont like the concept of male idols"???? Like. I personally domt like pearlina but im not going around saying it would be bad to ship them?? This makws no sense to me 😭
For Splatoon 4, I wanted a Band Group of four idols with sken being male and female, but after seeing this, maybe males wouldn't be a great idea given how obsessive some people can be with male pairings. TLDR make K-On but Splatoon for the fourth installment
I’ve created a city in my personal Splatoon fandom, where the idol group has three members; a female inkling who’s the main vocalist, a male inkling who provides backup vocals, and a male octoling who is the group’s DJ.
Personally its not needed but it would be nice to see. Otherwise we got fan artists to do it for us. Plus, I've seen how people act towards female idols vs male idols. It's kinda disturbing.
I think we can have a healthy balance of including male idols in the game while maintaining the flesh of the existing character arcs for previous idols without painting them as an accessory for men or an end goal/trophy. I completely understand where you’re coming from and I respect your opinion! I think it would be cool just to see diverse idols in general since that’s kinda what Splatoon represents. Maybe we could have idols that are plus sized or physically disabled. We could have idols that are neurodiverse kinda like Marina is implied to be or gender diverse! Everyone wants to see themselves in a positive light so we should give them that well deserved representation, without promoting harmful ideas and stereotypes.
the comments here are masters of missing the point. fandoms are misogynistic, i didnt know that was something that we were still arguing about. splatoon has become one of the few fandoms where that misogyny can be sidestepped a bit because of the overwhelmingly female cast, its rasonable to not want that to change.
While I can see where your coming from with what you've laid out, I still have to disagree. You made pretty good points about why you don't want male idols, but none of them are really reasons why Splatoon shouldn't have male idols. I, as a he/they man, do not identify with big man. I don't think a lot of the male player base do. Whenever people respond to the whole debate with "theres already Big Man," it's just exhausting. I personally just want one Idol, one character that makes the promo art or the posters or gets an amiibo that I feel represented by. I know its stupid because there are so many other games with male leads or whatever but I like my silly squid game and I love immersing myself in the world of Splatoon. I can't help but disagree with the notion that adding a male humanoid idol character will fundamentally break or shift the world Splatoon is building. If Splatoon 4 goes crazy and has 4 idol characters, having one of them be a guy won't hurt anything. Splatoon has managed to build a beautifully diverse and mostly inclusive fanbase, one that I'm proud to be able to be a part of. That's why this whole discourse strikes me as odd. It never occurred to me that there was possibly an unspoken rule like this. I personally think it's arbitrary and unnecessary. The whole thing makes me uncomfortable. The number of people arguing against a single man in the cast, some of them saying it'd ruin the franchise for them, others going out and saying they don't want more men in the fanbase. When others respond in disagreement, they're questioned for hating women. Is this what misogyny is like? I'm only used to being excluded from things for my sexuality, but a chunk of the fanbase seems to be trying to exclude men entirely. Regardless of what direction Nintendo ends up going in, I'm sure they'll handle the next iteration of Splatoon's game world with care. The discourse about the Splat3 Idols was so divisive on launch as it was, so they're gonna be extra careful with how they introduce the next characters. I just wish the discussion around this sort of thing could be more productive and less reductive than it has been. Your video was quite refreshing in that regard.
I like this video! I never really liked this argument mainly because of how gatekeep-y twitter was when discussing this. This was a really in depth and mostly neutral way to talk about the subject and i can understand the other side's point of view better now I still feel like male idols could be cool from a creative standpoint but this is certainly my male bias speaking jsjsj Thank you very much for your video! You expressed yourself very clearly. Also big man is the love of my life i would give everything for him
Hey, I may not have a strong opinion on this topic, but I really hope you won't get harassed for this, online spaces nowadays have been so insanely hostile towards women, queer people and minorities alike. Modern internet culture has largely accepted dogpilling on people over seemingly trivial disagreements as a valid behaviour. The splatoon community, despite its diversity and inclusivity, is not immune from this, please stay safe 🙌
The Splatoon community has always been very welcoming to the LGBT Community. I don’t see why it needs to specifically only cater to one of the letters though. When I start up the game and walk through the plaza I constantly see posts from all kinds of people in the LGBT community. My question is why can’t the gays have an idol why can’t the trans men have an idol. Last time I checked Splatoon is E for Everyone and frankly I’d like it to stay that way.
I want a hot male octoling (I will take an inkling as well), I dont care for the lesbian stuff (to each their own) and just want to simp~☆ So I hope things change
I think one theory to why male/male fics are made so much is because as someone who grew up in early 2000s internet who knew of the tumblr stuff that happened. Most of the fic writers who I knew wrote fics where women, who want to write fics of people who they find attractive, Meaning more menxmen fics. I mean the Trope of Fangirl is a trope for a reason. And from what I see most fangirls tend to follow men more then women.
This is an L take. Honestly none of this actually matters at the end of the day. Adding a male won’t and could not hurt. This whole video was a nothing sandwich.
Fr that's what I thought, like you don't want male idols in splatoon because they'll be more popular than the women? Big man def is less popular than shiver, sure the new male might be more popular but what is that gonna hurt?
I went in fully open minded to this, however I dont see much of an argument here. From what I take, you don't wish to have male idols in splatoon because people are going to give them attention? I feel you are just gatekeeping idols being female for the sake of itself without any more thought put into it. Splatoon is about representation, no matter the gender of the characters, and even so, its very much implied that females in splatoon are the "more capable" of the two. Even if people, both inside and outside the fandom talk about the male idols more than the female ones, how is that bad? This would be a net positive for splatoon, as it would give it more publicity and potentially bring more people to the game. This video and argument has no weight or substance to it, and I feel you wanted to make it for the sake of gatekeeping a specific gender, not cool.
Also, diss-pair. When they were introduced they were implied to be a couple so they immediately got a mini fandom surrounding them, even though their only content was two songs. Now imagine if those two were actual idols and how even more of the Splatoon fanbase would surround that ship. it'd probably end up way more popular than pearlina tbh
… GIRL WHAT?! So let me get this straight. You don’t want male idols in splatoon because you have fear of them getting more attention than the females bc you feel represented as a lesbian being able to see lesbian art? You are in fact gatekeeping, and you’re also being sexist and may I even say homophobic towards gay ppl? This is a children’s game, why on earth would players care whether what ship is the most popular? There will always be ships towards all the characters. The way you’re inclining this is just overall a horrible take. All these reasons are just invalid simply bc you don’t want male idols bc you don’t want ppl to ship them- like what? 💀
Just wanted to correct this take, because of all of the comments I've seen on this video, this one is the most blatantly incorrect. Male singers have been a part of the Splatoon series since the very first trailer released. Almost every band in the series, excluding the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook have at least one male inkling or octoling member. Some of the more well-known examples are found in Squid Squad, (creators of Splattack! and Now or Never!) Sashimori, (creators of Seasource, Amalgamania, and Entropical) and even DJ Octavio, who created many boss themes in the Splatoon games, and even showed up for Calamari Inkantation 3mix along with the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut. On another note, the band named W-3 (creators of the Salmon Run soundtracks) consists of 3 male characters. All of these bands have male characters in them, and hardly anyone is seen complaining about them. Sure, the Idol groups may have more songs, but if you think about it, the Squid Sisters, the original idols for Splatoon 1, had 10 total songs throughout three games, including each of their story modes. C-Side, on the other hand has 9 total songs throughout only one game. That is one less song than the Squid Sisters, who have made music since the very beginning. (C-Side didn't appear in games unitl Splatoon 3.) I just wanted to help you understand that if we are to get male idols in the future, the music doesn't have to and probably won't change at all.
@ woah... Ummm I just thought that male idols ( if it were to be realistic) would ensue more deep voices ( In the " important" songs) which would clash with the high key voices of the current and past ones!! Great vid on a very misunderstood topic ( example: me) !!
YES YES YES YES YES UR SO INCREDIBLY RIGHT I remember I used to want male idols just because, but then I saw the light. I also don't want male idols for the exact same reasons as you The proyect sekai example hurts so much too. Reminds me of my time in the VIVINOS fandom and what happened with Alien stage Heck, you mentioned coroika. I took a peek at that subsection of the fandom and EVERYTHING is about the guys. It barely feels like splatoon honestly Maybe I'm being petty, but I've been in enough fandoms, I think I have a pretty good grasp on how most people behave in fandoms, and I don't have a single doubt that attractive male idols would overtake the attention of the mayority of this fanbase the very moment they would be introduced, and anyone who doesn't see that are kidding themselves tbh
While male idols have always been wishful thinking for me, I expected there to be yet another female duo lead going into splatoon 3. And in a way, I got what I expected for the most time, but a small bit of my wish came but not in the way I anticipated. But if feels as though Big Man is the product of Nintendo's hesitancy in willing to flesh out the concept of male idols. He couldn't be anymore far removed from everyone's expectations of a male idol, from his lack of humanoid-like speech and design. Big man is just a way for Nintendo to give the illusion of male idols without full commitment, dgmw, I like Big Man, but he feels like a test to see whether to further development on the male idol concept or not. Splatoon 4 will probably be a turning point in terms of idol culture for splatoon, whether the male idols take the spotlight, or if it's just going to be yet another generic female duo that's being milked to death. Or maybe no new idols considering the gradfest results. My point is that as a male myself, I don't think it would hurt to let male idols get more development beyond Big Man. And as others have implied, I wouldn't worry so much about stuff like AO3 and fandoms. Alas there are far more important things that need to be addressed about splatoon than whether males should get more representation or not, it just sucks that one dude would waste this investment money choosing to argue over trivial stuff than things actually affecting the game. Also p.s. I like to mention Danganronpa for a moment. There was a lot of hype going into V3 with there being a female protagonist in a mainline game (no spinoff) with a unique personality that deviates from the generic beta male with low self esteem and lack of real talent. Unfortunately mini-spoliers that she dosen't last long and we go back to the same beta male archetype for the rest of the game. It goes to show that these discussions whether that be female protag or male idol have less to do with giving one gender more representation over the other and more to do with equal representation, or at least just simply taking a break from certain kinds of characters before they get old and unoriginal.
Tl;dr I personally would like to see more representation of male idols especially as inklings/octolings. I wouldn't just stop at Big Man if I had it my way. Also with Danganronpa, the opposite situation is true with the of a female protagonist getting shafted in favour of yet another male protagonist. Maybe the point of male idols and female protagonist is about breaking away from the mold before it gets boring and stale.
Im only like 1 minute and 30 seconds in but girl u need to chill. This is so chronically online I cant- just let us guys have a damn male idol that isnt a mf sting ray 😭
im sorry girl about all the pressed men you're getting in the comment section lol, it's like they didn't even watch the video before saying how they want represntation in a market that's already saturated with male characters...
I'm sorry but that's just wrong, i know a lot of the people in the in-game bands are male. But I'm worried the fact that 6/7 of the idols so far are female and pearl and marina are "together" are gonna be used by the women who hate men as a excuse that men "suck" when we are gonna have more male idols in the future.
@@Enzo.B_RL Sorry, but in no way, shape, or form, does having a female led character roster lead to misandry. It literally doesn't. And it certainly won't in a game as inviting and colourful and fun as splatoon. And sorry, you're worried we already have lots of female characters and a WLW relationship, and that will impact you?? somehow? If you find queer and feminine joy a threat to you, I suggest you take your privilege and entitlement elsewhere.
The Ao3 arguement didnt work with the fandom I chose (the owl house) lol not discrediting the argument but it doesn't work for EVERY popular fandom I still agree with almost everything but it is possible
I thought this would be serious but it was just making up new words like "fics" and trying to push that a fan-made theory is canon with little to no proof at all outside of things that would happen between family members, cousins, friends, etc.
I think in order to introduce male idols. It would make sense to overall add more characters in total. As to be honest i have a feeling that male idols would be so painfully boring. Also i have a feeling although I'm probably not as experienced as you i think the site you were using is more based on how vocal the fans of the ships are. Or characters in general. As mizuki from project sekai is defiantly the most popular.
It's crazy u go to a fanpic website, what is fanfiction primarily written by WOMEN women like gay men they like yaoi also you decided to not talk about one of the biggest games overwatch who's most popular champs are all female same with league of legends but regardless it's literally just a preference you want lesbian fish people is all which btw when you look up rule 34 all of the characters in this are paired with men soo idk
Something I think would make both sides of this debate is a transmasc idol with a female voice actor Sure the male idols MAY become more popular (even tho I personaly find female idols sugnificantly more intresting), that still would not hurt would it? I mean, Shiver is non-binary and there is not a problem with that.
I don't even watch or play Splatoon yet this sounds insane Why not more variety,if this video was the opposite you would had gotten many more people saying this is stupid Also male characters getting more spotlight by the community than female is because... There is more men playing games than woman due to society pressure, in the future when the ratio between men and women in games becomes close to 50/50(actually there will probably be more women because men is prone to try to be cool due to "testosterone poisoning " as I call it)
...your argument falls apart when you realize, like you said in the beginning, we already have a male idol. I don't really think he changed anything. A male inkling/octoling wouldn't change much either.
i completely disagree. what im seeing here is that you’re being jealous of male characters getting attention. you’re saying that you aren’t gatekeeping, but that’s exactly what you’re doing. having 1 male character wouldn’t hurt no one nor the franchise itself. at the end of the day, you end up being greedy for not wanting male inclusion, which goes against Splatoon’s freedom of gender and your own analogy about wanting representation.
I think the next male idol should be a shrimp who looks like the nerd emoji, but when he does performances, he becomes a glam rock superstar
LOl that would be so interesting

Tbh I don’t think one male inkling or octoling idol would hurt in my opinion but I understand why you don’t want it. (I’ve been thinking like a brother & sister idol group for example lol)
No something like 2 boys and 2 girls
Yeah that sounds good
That's what I've been wanting for so long
as a lesbian i really dont see the need to gatekeep female casts. the splatoon fandom is HEAVILY female and lgbt dominated as it is and a male idol/idol group wouldnt change a thing. i dont see why variety would be a bad thing when im certain a male idol or two wouldnt change the status quo. i personally would love some male inkfish idols! like i said, i like variety in casts, and i already headcanon agent 3 and 8 as male. i think male idols would just be a nice addition to that
I agree! Although I can see her points somewhat, I still felt pretty upset at the gatekeeping. As a trans guy, I would love to see a male idol
Yay a fellow Lesbian!!
The horror.
We need a preppy girl and a emo boy for our next idol group
YES PLEASE. I also want male emo hair in the next splatoon game as a customization option tho

@@Me_Myself_Maly I was thinking that they should be lovers instead of siblings
Maybe in Splatoon 4 there could be two pairs of idols (one male, one female) competing against each other. (This is just a thought lol)
This is such a good idea especially to have 4 idols in the 4th Splatoon game without making an entire group of 4 and needing 4 teams for splatfests
Yes! And Splatfests could be tournaments that restore the "This or That" instead of the "This or That or That" lasting three weekends.
what i thought would be interesting (and is an idea im vaguely adapting for an idol group in my fanfic) is a group of 4 idols, but instead of 4 teams for splatfests as youd kinda expect since splat3 did 3-way splatfests, we return to 2 teams, and each team is backed by 2 of the idols. or, hell, maybe on occasion there IS a 3-way splatfest, and the idol split is 2 vs 1 vs 1. either way, more idols than there are splatfest teams.
this spices things up a bit for that subsection of people who just choose their fest team based on the idol(s) they like, as now theres multiple per team, with the potential of ONE of those idols being one you arent too hot about. it also spices up the character interactions, because imagine two of the idols being particularly good friends or sumn and choosing different teams and just being SO dramatic about it. or maybe on one occasion 3 of the idols backing one team and the lone idol on the other side being like 'GUYS WHAT THE HECK YOURE LEAVING ME HANGING?????'
i just think itd be funny
With this, we could also see more tournament/bracket-style Splatfests, like the TMNT and Sanrio ones in Splatoon 2. Each member of each pair could represent their own team (starting with 4 teams total), then each pair reps the winner of the first round and the two teams/idol pairs compete against each other.
Or imagine another trio but it’s a he, she, and a they, that’d be pretty cool
Why is this a debate I feel like the gender doesn’t affect the Splatoon characters at all.
(And people love Acht!)
There's another point about the observed preferential treatment about male characters in shipping I'm surprised you didn't mention, and that's the Agent 24 pairing.
(in all seriousness, i hope this wasn't confrontational, i just wanted to give my irrelevant unimportant thoughts. feel free to completely disregard.)
also also, proseca honestly feeds the gl lovers more (which probably has more to do with female friendships in japanese culture but i'm choosing to believe in the gay), just look at the trained "time for a decisive battle" an card. the closest thing to anything that queer for any guy is akito ruffling toya's hair- and i'm all for it. lets go lesbians!!!
@@mahimeghan i might've misinterpreted a little lol. i totally understand and support wanting to be in a fandom where girls characters are the stars of conversation! i wish all [splatoon enjoyers] a very [cute squid girls]

i dont get why this is a debate at all, personally i would love to see some male idols a boy band would be cool to see, i gen dont think the gender of the idols should rlly be an issue
Also about the male characters YOU CAN MAKE ALL THE AGENTS MALE
Are the default options female? Yes. But YOU play as them, therefore you can make them male if you want, or non binary
Also you can make whatever fan fiction with them cuz the agents are the player characters
Makes no sense why, but we've only ever gotten one official showing/art piece of them as a man, and it wasn't even a colored drawing.
i think, if nintendo could do it right, nintendo making a cephalopod male idol wouldnt change alot.
since every idol group is different from the last, off the hook having an octoling, marina, and deep cut being a trio. i understand where youre coming from, but i think an all-male idol group (or one more relevant male cephalopod).
to clear, i totally enjoy the female lead of splatoon, and i want it to stay that way.
i just think it would perhaps be beneficial to have a male humanoid idol

I just want Male Idols to mix things up. The two female idols of every game have gotten a bit stale. Splatoon's all about keeping things fresh, right?

I don't think decisions about the game'as development should be made based on how the fandom will react. People are allowed to wanna see themselves in the game and asking for a male idol isn't saying they don't want female idols.
THIS
^^^ also worth noting that people who want a male idol aren't necessarily guys who want to see themselves, it also just includes girls who like cute boys

"Big Man barely got any attention in the game" Huh?
@ got neglected. 1. He barely had any lines in songs (yeah, yeah, he did the instrumentals, but he should still get more lines.) 2. Was part of deep cut, the idol group that was only in one of the splatoon story modes, which they got sidelined on.
Ok why is everyone skiming over the last part thas nasty
finally a video that summarizes exactly how I feel!
So the question of whether or not we'll get a male inkling/octoling idol in Splatoon rests more on Japanese pop culture, on whether the female idol craze in Japan starts to stagnate and male stars get more of a chance to shine
summarized my thoughts exactly, great video!

i love that splatoon is a franchise with a ton of female leads. it is one of the only mainstream games like that. it would be nice if we could keep it that way. if you want a tumblr sexyman just find another game.
despite me not being in the splatoon fandom (but seen my fair share of any fandom's views of men), i completely agree with your statement! i've always had a feeling that women especially in media were always meant to be a supporting side character for the main male character and it is always a shocker when it is the female characters that are dominating a fandom. tbh, i feel like they should get the same treatment; although, more points to the women recognition right now to first balance the scale.
also more lgtbtq+ characters when...
Seconded- it's weird to feel Femslash fics are rare in a fandom, but it happens, and it could be more reason to encourage more of it in fics.
not to be rude but i think we are grasping at straws a bit. personally i want male humanoid idols because inkling boy was always my favorite playable character and i choose male for agent 8 as well. i was honestly kind of disappointed when i realized their were no humanoid male characters who make appearances in the game besides cuttlefish which barely counts.
don't get me wrong i wouldn't loose any sleep if we just get another female duo or trio but its just something I've wanted for a long time now and i just don't see how it would change the fandom around the series.
i disagree because we only have big man and more male idols would be very musch welcom but still you can have that opingion i just dontb agree
while there isn't a lack of representation in the majority of media for men, there is somewhat a lack of this in the Splatoon series (in terms of characters), which happens to be a game series amongst the favorites of certain people (myself included). I disagree with your take on this discussion, but I appreciate you voicing your concern based on your personal experience.
as a side note, I don't at all support or agree with what that guy at the Nintendo shareholder meeting was saying, since he was talking about an issue that doesn't actually exist. even if it was an actual issue with the game, it would still be eclipsed by the plethora of actual issues the series has.
splatoon initially wasn't going to have inkling boys as an option
i really appreciate seeing women, especially women of color, taking lead and i hope this does not change
What about a Big Sister and a Little Brother as an idol duo? Would the little brother outclass the adult sister in popularity?
(deep breath in)

Ok well why did frye and shiver get more attention than big man grr
I used to think almost exactly like this, if you asked me beginning of splat 3 I would have said yeah we dont NEED male idols no do I reallg want one. But now, after grand fest. My curiosity with how a humanoid male idol would play out over rides my normal boredom from everyday male characters!
Especially since splat 1 lore once made it seem like male octolings wasnt common. So if we base winning splafest as the main theme for splat 4 I can see the potential of a popular male octoling standing out story wise (amd why they would be an idol)
All in all, as a bi women, Im very pleased with how splatoon currently is. Its refreshing to have so many females as poster characters, but if there happened to be a main male humanoid idol next game I wouldnt be mad XD
Zesty obnoxious idol because hes a rare male octoling (before great the turf war) would be so funny ngl
i understand your verdict but i think its rather silly to base it off of fandom reactions. fandoms like boys, its just a fact. you cant avoid it by banning males in the splatoon idol universe. i think itd be a breath of fresh air to have an inkling fella! its gonna get boring after a while seeing just another girl and another girl. shake things up, invite change! he doesnt need to steal the spotlight but it could be nice.
Plus, Pearlina will prevent the shippers from getting too out of hand with shipping him with another male character.
cry harder there are a million games with male leads, let us have this
(almost) everyone in the comments missing the damn point omg
ive seen an interesting take that i want to bring up. in splatoon 3, gender presentation was more regarded as a style than anything else. so what if the new group just changed style every now and then? some days fem, some days masc, not every member has to do the same thing on the same days. nintendo likely would never but it would be neat i think
That got me thinking. What about the dead or alive fandom?
@@VGF80 honestly, I'm not sure but I'm sure there might be stats on the player base somewhere. I'll make sure to do some research on it. 😊
tbh you pointed out a point i never thought of but you are indeed so right. its the first time to see a game were indeed women are the stars of it!
i want a kpop boy band i dont care
Lol that would fit honestly
YESSSSSSSSS!!!
ew… don’t poison splatoon with a freaking *k-pop* group.
@@_BubblGum_ im not even into kpop, i just think itd be funny af
@theevilbeastmostfoul funny or not, i can just see the amount of chaos and toxicity spreading around the fanbase…
This is why I hate the Splatoon fandom, non of you are open to change and you all make out that a male idol is going to change the whole game, we have so many female idols. One or two male idols won't hurt anything, get a grip- this is coming from a female aswell.
What if we just removed men and the ability to play as a male from splatoon entirely haha
What if we just removed men
I completely agree with your statement!
I'm with you on this one. We need to be greedy. We *WANT* to be greedy.
As a dude I personally would love to see some more male representation in the idols, but I respect your opinion.
THE WAY I HAD ALREADY WRITTEN A COMMENT ABT PROSEKA B4 U BROUGHT IT UP LOLLL its so dire in that fandom that it even made me actively repulsed by those male charas.. i have absolute zero faith that the same wouldnt happen in splatoon..
as an aside for proseka, the situation with the most popular female character in the west is super sus too bc shes heavily implied to be a trans girl, but the same fans that talk pretty much exclusively about the male characters also include her in that bunch so its like.. hmm
I CANT HANDLE PPL SAYING MIZUKI IS A BOYYY like who would give that thousand yard stare upon being correctly gendered. Who
This video specifically made me wanna see male idols in splatoon.
I dont really understand this much man,,,,, all im really getting from this is "i dont want male idols because i dont like the concept of male idols"???? Like. I personally domt like pearlina but im not going around saying it would be bad to ship them?? This makws no sense to me 😭
Here’s an hot take : fandom ships are trash and nobody should care
W
Now we're just making shit up I see lmao
@Freelancer837 do you not think fandoms are misogynistic or what. can you be more specific.
@@Freelancer837 any large fandom will be misogynistic because society is misogynistic. turn ur brain on
Idea, If it's male make it a non cephalopod again, Or make it a full on cephalopod like octavio, It would be cool!
Octavio is actually an Octoling, he just can't shift into his humanoid form due to injuries caused by The Great Turf War.
This was a really in depth and mostly neutral way to talk about the subject and i can understand the other side's point of view better now
I still feel like male idols could be cool from a creative standpoint but this is certainly my male bias speaking jsjsj
Thank you very much for your video! You expressed yourself very clearly.
Also big man is the love of my life i would give everything for him
Nah a boyband idol group would be kinda funny ngl.
Gotta be a 90's or so American boyband though if they do it lol
The boyband era is inevitable.
I want a hot male octoling (I will take an inkling as well), I dont care for the lesbian stuff (to each their own) and just want to simp~☆ So I hope things change
Here’s what you do: you make the male idol a femboy.
BEE CUUS DHE YOOTH DEESE DAYS R ADICTED TO SQUID WOMEN JENERATION SQUID IS DOOMED YALL
Everything wrong with the Western Splatoon fandom is encapsulated in this video.
5:17 everything wrong with the japanese splatoon fandom!1! just shut up bro
Being a triangle, never stopped artists (me included) to draw any sort of "mantaling", gijinkan or plain human. And making him hot.
Imagine customizable idols lol
I think one theory to why male/male fics are made so much is because as someone who grew up in early 2000s internet who knew of the tumblr stuff that happened. Most of the fic writers who I knew wrote fics where women, who want to write fics of people who they find attractive, Meaning more menxmen fics. I mean the Trope of Fangirl is a trope for a reason. And from what I see most fangirls tend to follow men more then women.
The pattern so far with idol relationships is
Family
Lovers
Friends
they might continue this with a new relationship for the next game
I don’t want a male idol
This is an L take. Honestly none of this actually matters at the end of the day. Adding a male won’t and could not hurt. This whole video was a nothing sandwich.
Fr that's what I thought, like you don't want male idols in splatoon because they'll be more popular than the women? Big man def is less popular than shiver, sure the new male might be more popular but what is that gonna hurt?
But y'know, no hate, everyone has their own opinions
She's delusional.
Male idols would change the Splatoon music. So I am against.
YES YES YES YES YES UR SO INCREDIBLY RIGHT
I remember I used to want male idols just because, but then I saw the light. I also don't want male idols for the exact same reasons as you
The proyect sekai example hurts so much too. Reminds me of my time in the VIVINOS fandom and what happened with Alien stage
Heck, you mentioned coroika. I took a peek at that subsection of the fandom and EVERYTHING is about the guys. It barely feels like splatoon honestly
Maybe I'm being petty, but I've been in enough fandoms, I think I have a pretty good grasp on how most people behave in fandoms, and I don't have a single doubt that attractive male idols would overtake the attention of the mayority of this fanbase the very moment they would be introduced, and anyone who doesn't see that are kidding themselves tbh
I still don’t understand why she doesn’t want a male idol can someone explain the video wasn’t clear for me 😭😭😭
because they would be more popular than women idols
Why is that a problem 😭😭

whyyyyyyy also thesplatoon community is male led due to the female idols
The Ao3 arguement didnt work with the fandom I chose (the owl house) lol not discrediting the argument but it doesn't work for EVERY popular fandom
I still agree with almost everything but it is possible
Glad it didn’t work for Owl House. Women win!
As mizuki from project sekai is defiantly the most popular.
ah jes, sexism, but only okay when a women does it
It's crazy u go to a fanpic website, what is fanfiction primarily written by WOMEN women like gay men they like yaoi also you decided to not talk about one of the biggest games overwatch who's most popular champs are all female same with league of legends but regardless it's literally just a preference you want lesbian fish people is all which btw when you look up rule 34 all of the characters in this are paired with men soo idk
Something I think would make both sides of this debate is a transmasc idol with a female voice actor
Sure the male idols MAY become more popular (even tho I personaly find female idols sugnificantly more intresting), that still would not hurt would it?
I mean, Shiver is non-binary and there is not a problem with that.
nah bro just think abt the future fire music w/ male idols bro (if there are any future male idols ofc)
Gender bias much
I don't even watch or play Splatoon yet this sounds insane
Why not more variety,if this video was the opposite you would had gotten many more people saying this is stupid
Also male characters getting more spotlight by the community than female is because...
A male inkling/octoling wouldn't change much either.
yeah, because hes not humanoid. make him an octoling/inkling and bam, everyones hooked.
@_BubblGum_ Oh no they made a cool male character in Splatoon, it's not like Captain Cuttlefish or Iso Padre or Spyke exist. Whatever shall we do?
@@JadeNotHarley what? everyone you just mentioned doesn’t have a humanoid figure besides captain cuttlefish, and hes an old geezer.
@@_BubblGum_ Spyke is humanoid though........
@@JadeNotHarley still, theres a difference between a minor character and an idol.
i completely disagree.
what im seeing here is that you’re being jealous of male characters getting attention. you’re saying that you aren’t gatekeeping, but that’s exactly what you’re doing. having 1 male character wouldn’t hurt no one nor the franchise itself.
at the end of the day, you end up being greedy for not wanting male inclusion, which goes against Splatoon’s freedom of gender and your own analogy about wanting representation.
