Robert Welsh actually has been a working MUA for years and most of the people he does react to are not. He does a lot more than reaction videos and his reaction videos are never attacking the person, their looks or anything personal, just the techniques and what he would do instead. The difference between Hyram and Robert is that Robert actually is a trained MUA, not just an enthusiast and while Hyram "shades" people or is directly mean about acne or things they can't help Robert focuses only on technique. I feel his videos are more based on education while Hyram is just mean and dramatic most of the time.

    • @JordanJSparks

My point is that there is no tradeship governming the MUA industry, like say, being a Hairdresser, so for him to call his training professional makeup artist training and for him to not acknowledge someone like Manny Mua as being a professional is a slap in the face. Manny is just as much of a professional as Robert.

As a licensed esthetician I dislike it very much when beauty gurus use ´specialist´ in their title of their skincare review videos. You can not create a correct skincare regimen for everyone unless you have met every single one of your subscribers personally, and even then, whatever is said does not come out legitimate if you are not thoroughly educated . Some products Hyram recommended may helped his viewers, sure, but I really have something against the usage of the term ´specialist´ when he is clearly an enthusiast at best. I get that people like watching his videos because they are entertaining in some sense and he seems to be a very likable person. But that doesn´t mean you shouldn´t criticize his legitimacy. A lot of young- no, actually, people of all ages takes his words for granted. It is much cheaper to listen to tips and tricks by enthusiastic beauty gurus than go seek out a professional. These people say vitamin c, niacinamidr, azelaic acid, hyaluronic acid and retinols are GREAT. HOWEVER they are great for some and you shouldnt use it all in the same routine. So many people with skin problems would see improvement if they just simplified their routine so their own skin can heal... There are only a few youtubers, like dr dray, who explain it correctly. Just use a simple cleanser, a moisturizer and a sunscreen in the morning, then at night a micelar water or oil cleanser, a cleaner, a moisturizer and after like ten minuted apply a THIN layer of differin/adapalene (or whatever active you enjoy) . The simpler, the better your skin will react. But yeah, that's not profitable.

So many of his opinions on products (or whole brands even) are based solely on ingredients lists, and he essentially "reviews" products without ever having used them! And for whatever reason, so many of his followers just accept his word as law. He made a video about Clinique, basically saying that it's all garbage that no one should use, and people in the comments were talking about throwing out BRAND NEW bottles of product that they had been using FOR YEARS simply because they weren't "Hyram Approved." Yes, they may have some out-dated formulations, but all of their products are fragrance-free and EXTENSIVELY allergy tested. They test each formula on hundreds of people for weeks, and if anyone has a single reaction, they start over and reformulate. I clearly wasn't the only one who got the same message from his video. Just read the comments. It's ridiculous.

Could it be that you remember him being overly harsh because you mentioned he rubs you the wrong way therefore making you more prone to overscrutinizing him? Like I said, I watched that video too, and what I got from it was that he generally approved of the brand, he liked in fact several products including the moisturizers, but he said he wished they spiced up their game a bit and used more exciting ingredients, instead of the same old stuff that's outdated.
But I can understand how when one doesn't like someone that much one tends to have a bit different perception of what's being said. I tend to react negatively to people that "rub me the wrong way" too... there are a few famous people in that category for me as well xD I get annoyed by a lot of what they say, just because they say it. He also says that you can find cheaper alternatives of their products at the drugstore, and I honestly haven't found hardly any drugstore dupes of their products. @@JordanJSparks but how do you know it’s great for 99% of the population?? The same goes the other way around. Just because you like a product doesn’t mean that product is great. It’s all very relative. I usually don’t agree with everything hyram says, but he is just stating his personal opinion which he has the right to do so. Granted, he has a large platform and can influence many people, sometimes possibly in the wrong way, but that’s part of the territory of having any large platform and any personal opinions. Personally, I don’t like Cetaphil at all. I have oily and sensitive skin and this brand in general is super drying to my skin. I’m pretty sure many experienced the same. So to say 99% of people would like these products is ALSO sort of irresponsible because is highly likely to not be true. It’s just simply an opinion of your own experience. But that’s the thing, why is it ok for you to have your opinion but not for Hyram? It’s just an odd point of view. The thing for me in here is, we are talking about opinions in general and not facts. Because if we get nit gritty, for example, fragrance is not a killer on a product that washes off, but it will be a killer with frequent and continuos use because it could potentially develop sensitivity regardless if it’s just a wash off product or not cause the key also relays on frequency. And that is just one example on how not everyone has the total truth in their hands to really point the fingers at others. Sometimes not even professionals or doctors are right because they can also “form” their own personal beliefs and opinions.
And anyone has the right to express their opinion on a small or large platform and not be crucified for it (unless is a very terrible opinion like for example promoting hate speech, racism, etc). All I’m saying is, you have the right to talk about your opinion about Hyram, but that doesn’t mean it can come across as partially unfounded and even as bitter (or jealous). Just saying. Is disgusting!! This Truly shows how RUclips is biased and plays unfair games with certain content creators... I have seen him steal from so many smaller skincare content creators and don't even mention where he got the info from.. Glow by Ramon, Raw Tin Skin, Matt Randon and Shundara Castion are skincare content creators I know for a fact he has regurgitated there information and never credited them.. Some have alluded to him stealing from Dr Dray as well... There are so many more but they don't care... I know a few have said some things subliminally but that's about it. It's clear he uses a filter!! One minute he is a dark orange color with smooth skin and the next minute he is pale with a 5 o'clock shadow.... Karma will get him eventually for manipulating people for money and fame... The only reason he gets away with it is because he isn't problematic.... Thank you for calling out the BS!!!

I’ve also always thought that he was WAY to overdramatic about Certain things. For example FRAGRANCE! I am not even sensitive to fragrance yet I always feel guilty when I use products that I love. Not everything is a life or death situation..... especially not two drops of essential oils or something. I don’t feel like it’s right to put down a company that puts one drop of fragrance especially when it’s supposed to hide other things that smell bad in the item... what else where they supposed to do!

Its for people who are sensitive to fragrance. A lot of people are. Hyram always says if it works for you keep using it. Some people just don't realize fragrance is causing a lot of problems with they're skin I didn't until I started watching him. When I started removing fragrance from my routine, I noticed a dramatic decrease in flare ups on my face. Generally fragrance just causes more problems in people skin when its unnecessary in most products. But If you enjoy it keep using it! This video was meant as a Critical Analysis of someone with a large Public Platform. I still support Hyram, I think he has a great foundational knowledge of the function of the Epidermis and above average insight into the formulation of products in the Skin Care and Cosmetics industry. Just like every Human, Hyram is not perfect and I am not holding him to a standard of perfection. I think Hyram has had a profound impact helping people get initiated into skincare and helping people build their own interest in Skin Care so they can dive into a more in depth education if they so choose. I personally will still watch Hyram if he has content that is of interest to me and I still support him as a great source of Skin Care content for you too! I apologize as I have emotional disregulation due to my ADHD and Anxiety that generally makes me appear super aggressive and angry when I am just passionate about something. I think that hyram channel is for someone who's just new or have zero knowledge about skincare to begin with, or someone like me who isn't too 'blessed' to be able to understand the chemistry behind the formulation and ingredients, hyram's way of the 'fear mongoring technique' is a simple and straightforward way for people like me to get into a store and choose the best and 'safe' products at least, where he mentioned what ingredients we should avoid without getting too deep and complicated about the science behind it 😆 However, if i wanna learn more about something or a professional opinion about skincare ingredients, i will always compare and contrast the opinions from multiple sources, especially from dr dray channel, i always bear in mind that hyram's opinion is not the professional one, he also did mention about this in his videos always. 😊 These are just my humble opinions btw...

For example fragrance: he always says that he, personally, doesn’t like fragrance but that it doesn’t bother him in a wash off treatment. Moreover he says if it’s not working for his skin it can still work for others. He usually dislikes fragrance because there is no other need for it to be in the product than the smell.
The Cetaphil thing he said is about being a good and simple product but if you’re looking for more/other ingredients there are other options.
Not knowing the science behind it isn’t actually bad if you’re researching the outcome of the use. You still know what it does and how it works even if you don’t know every tiny bit. For example: salicylic acid -> unclogges pores, but not exactly how every acid works.
Overall, an interesting video. I think it is important to get another perspective on skincare, which you offered.

' He has said on numerous occasions on numerous platforms that Cetaphil is stripping . I can time stamp tiktok AND youtube videos for you if it's that important. I understand your point of view 100% but That's actually where my problem with it is actually, there is no such thing a professional licensed makeup artist. Makeup is a Art form you can learn by yourself or by going to school,etc.. It is not a governed trade like Hairdressing. you don't need any school or specific training to be a professional makeup artist. There are schools you can go to, but as stated, it is not a governed trade . There is no difference between Robert and Manny. The people he refers to as 'Beauty Guru's' do client work for the highest caliber A- List celebrities on their channels all the time. Nikkie is one of THEEEE most talented makeup artists on the planet. Her eye for detail is *chefs kiss * in my opinion. Regardless of what kind of makeup artist he considers himself or any of them to be, they are all makeup artists. It's the same as A- List stars saying Social media stars are 'not celebrities'. If they have a bigger following than Zac Efron or Kim Kardashian, you can bet they are a celebrity lol. Celebrity by definition is someone who is well known. Kim K is not an actress either so why would Kim K be a celeb but not Charli or Addison Rae for example? Whether someone respects your work is irrellevant.

I’m a professional makeup artist of ten years, in Los Angeles for film, events, etc. And this is false. “Licensed” makeup artists aren’t really a thing. Most of the professionals in my industry, actually every one I know, learned from freelance or possibly a trade school and took a course. It is not something with tests and qualifications. The comment from Jordan replying to this is 100% correct. There’s no difference between NikkieTutorials and Robert Welsh other than him possibly specializing in let’s say wedding makeup rather than Nikkie doing heavier event makeup. The only differences between a professional makeup artist and someone who’s hobby is makeup is 1) can they do makeup on others, not just themselves. And a wide diverse range of clients. And 2) do they follow sanitization protocols for safety. That’s about it. And obviously, practice and experience will determine your skill level.

So I have a few pet peeves when it comes to Hyram :
    1. For someone who got into the skin care because of premature aging as he claims, he does not have a lot of input about anti aging products, namely retinols as number 1 proven anti aging ingredient. He rarely mentions retinol products as is, and when he does, he recommends Shani Darden retinol which is beginner retinol and it definitely would not have eliminated all his wrinkles to 0 if he only used that one forever.
    2. He always bashes his skin with extreme over exaggeration like "my eyes are so extremely puffy right now and I have a break out the size of a volcano" and there's literally nothing there on his face. That makes people like me, who actually do suffer with those things, feel like shit and my confidence decreases even further.
    3. It's ok to have opinions and preferences when it comes to products you use, but constantly turning down products because of false information (like chemical spfs being reef unfriendly or Polyethylene killing sea life) does not do anyone any favors. It's totally fine to admit you're wrong about this info and still prefer mineral spfs, but stagnant stance which never changes even when there is so much information to state otherwise, for me that's the worst.

i will say before i started watching hyram, i would feel super itchy after using cetaphil. like dry itchy. i started using cerve, but i’m currently using an even more gentle cleanser. idk what it is, but my skin gets SO angry if i don’t use a SUPER gentle cleanser and a cleansing oil first. but then if i don’t use any moisturizer (not often, ADHD sometimes doesn’t let me complete my self care after i shower) i don’t get very dried out. i don’t have super dry or oily skin. it’s just really sensitive.
the comment about the pH is not wholly accurate. (i do NOT know the full situation, this is just me being nit-picky about science.) I’m a junior in biosystems engineering at one of the top colleges for my major. i’ve taken AP chem, chem 1 and 2, biochemistry (so much stuff about pH), heat and mass transfer, ect. this is a fairly basic concept to my education. lowering the concentration of an acid in the solution would in fact raise the overall pH. there for if you did get an acid burn from a product, you could say the pH was too low or the concentration was too high.
those things being said, i don’t really listen to just one person ever about anything. i agree that hyram is entertaining and informative. however, i also watch other people’s videos about the same topic. if there is varying opinions, i do my own research and use the skills taught to me in various classes to determine what i think the answer should be. i love using hyram to get the basic info about a product and/or learn about new products. as he says, he’s not a dermatologist or aesthetician, therefor i put very little stock into what he says when it comes to the technical side of skin care.

I think Hyram is very honest and he always says at the beginning of every single one of his videos that he is not a professional and that not everyone has to take his words to heart and that they are his personal opinions and how HE decides what products he would use and explains the ingredient list which is very smart to do. I believe he calls himself a specialist because at his job, that's his title. That is not a title he gave himself.
I like that he explains what the scientific words are on the ingredient list, that people tend to skip over, but I love that he explains to simpler terms. Although he does nitpick, but he does so, because he only wants the best for his skin and hopes for his viewers to want the best for their own skin as well. And he does sound like a hypocrite sometimes (i.e. YTTP , fragrance etc), but he does back it up on why he uses it, it's because it's a wash off treatment (which he explains alot in his videos)
Yes he is sponsored, he is also always upfront about brands reaching out to him to review and test, but he will always tell the brands that sponsor him that he will be brutally honest regardless of the free products they give him, which he does, during his videos. I like that he does learn from his mistakes -- especially when his viewers call him out on certain things -- he does admit it when he's wrong because at the end of the day, he is a human after all. He doesn't claim to know everything. What his viewers choose to buy, are ultimately up to them. He simply guides people who are either starting out with skincare or just want more information. He is incredibly humble with a passion for skincare. He introduces tons of brand names and products, there is no way that a single person can use all of them anyways so he is only giving his viewers "options" which isn't wrong. He has also said that yes fragrance can be irritating etc and that some products have alcohol that aren't good for the skin, BUT he also knows that certain people react differently to some products and he says that they can always continue with what works best for them.

@@laurenkcole He did warn against using it if you have super sensitive skin though. He always made it clear how strong the product was. I don't have sensitive skin but even I was hesitant to try it because of Hyram's warnings.
As for glycolic cleansers, he's said he doesn't love the ones with high percentages for everyday use. I remember him recommending one with a lower percentage for everyday use but he still said to he careful if you have sensitive skin. You use a cleanser day and night meaning 14 times a week in comparison to the mask which is once a week or twice. It's reasonable that he might not have recommended the glycolic cleansers with a high percentage for everyday use. At the end of the day, he has always said everyone's skin is different and he says this stuff based on what he learns from derms and etc. He never said his word should be taken as gospel so I feel bad for him

i think the reason robert welsh does those videos is because he learnt makeup the traditional way, whereas james charles and manny learnt the sephora/mac/social media/drag way

My friend just became a Makeup Artist the Formal way. She did her entire training in 1 day this past weekend and is now a certified Makeup Artist. Sounds like a TONNE of experience in comparison to people that spent everyday the last 10 years working on makeup... The point being; if you do the exact same job as someone else, don't put yourself on a pedestal.

i agree with absolutely everything you talked about in this video it was really well put together as well.
what i don’t like is hyram telling people that their skincare routine is “wrong” or they shouldn’t be using what they’re using. like, skincare is very personal, he doesn’t know their skin type or what they need, who is he to say what they should be doing or not. dermatologists and actual specialists can do that, but only after actually properly getting to know their clients and testing for allergies and stuff like that. who is he to judge someone he hasn’t even met, through a youtube video without knowing anything about the person (their skin type, their history with different products)
for example, me. i have normal to oily skin and i know that if hyram saw my skincare routine he would flame me for it and would tell me everything i'm doing is wrong. i don't use any comercial cleansers or things that are "marketed" as skincare. i wash my face with regular mild soap. and i rarely use moisturizers, all i use is virgin, sweet almond oil, with nothing added to it (from herbal pharmacies - not sure if that would be the proper translation, i am romanian and in my country we have special pharmacies that sell only completely natural products, with no other added ingredients, just herbal remedies). this is the same skincare routine that my mother has, which she learnt from her grandmother. my mother is now 51 years old, and she is just barely now starting to get a few wrinkles around the corners of her eyes. the same with her grandmother, my great-grandma, which sadly passed away at 93. that woman was 93 years old and she looked around 70 years old. skin is influenced by genetics, so that's why i also adopted the same skincare routine, and it does wonders for me. i will not try to change it and waste all of my money on hundreds of skincare productes that are nothing but well-marketed, and won't do anything good for me. i don't care that "that's what everyone does and it's trendy to have a 10 step skincare routine" or shit like that. i am now 19 years old, i have went thruogh puberty and when i was starting to get pimples at around 12, i immediately started doing what my mother told me, and started to use tea tree essential oil. a lot of people say "ohh you're 12, you're too young to care about skincare yet, you should start when you're around 20, that's when your skin would start to age, until then you don't need to do anything to it". but that is not true at all (at least for women in my family), that was their secret, starting young, so you won't even allow the aging process to start. i have went through puberty and haven't ever had to deal with severe acnee. once in a blue moon i would get like, one pimple, but that was it (and it’s mostly because it was that time of the month, so it’s not really much i can do about that, breaking out around that time is normal)
i know that hyram would try to tell me that this is wrong, and i need a special cleanser, and a special serum, and special moisturizer, and blah blah blah, and would try to convince me that i need all those expensive products with thousands o ingredients (which, some can be harmful). when that is absolutely not true for me. this is why i dislike skincare youtubers that try to tell you what to do when they don't know anything about you or your genetics.
this doesn’t mean that i don’t care for skin care or dislike it in any way. i’m actually very interested in it, and sometimes i wish i would do more and use more things simply because skin care to me is very therapeutical. i see it as self care, it makes me feel better. but since i have a skin care routine that i’ve stuck to for years and is working wonderfully for me, i don’t have any reason to change it. i don’t want to risk switching to other products because i might get really bad problems with my skin. i’ve tried a few commercial cleansers when i was younger, and actual face creams for a while, simply because i wanted to have a wider range of products and more steps in my skin care routine because as i said, to me it therapeutical and i felt like i needed to do more, but also because i was young and impressionable and i saw all these youtubers with 10 steps skin care routines, i felt like that was the only “right” way to do it. to this date, it’s the worst thing i’ve ever done for myself. for a short period of time, until i quit that routine and returned to my normal products, i had so many breakouts and i was even left with a bit of acnee scarring. fortunately, i stopped right away and my skin went back to normal and got rid of the discolouration and scarring.

I agree that he is not a profesional skincare specialist on paper. But i do think he knows and learned a lot by educating himself. I know people without a diploma who are better in what they do then people that have a diploma for it.

He really doesn't know very much... seriously. He learns how to pronounce the words & the very basic things you can find on the first page of Google results. I've been really into skincare for years, just trust me, he's really selling himself as knowledgeable. He's absolutely giving more info than what you find on a package, but all his videos are formulated the same way you'd form an engaging sales pitch. Have you noticed he has basically no videos that are just educating on a type of ingredient without plugging a product? He also only plugs certain brands. There's tried & true products that have been winning awards for years that he never mentions. Aside from that, he really isn't very thorough at all with the info, his vitamin C video doesn't even mention the most stable form that's been studied, he only mentions 2. One being the least effective, but very common bc it's very cheap

I agree with ALL of these points & so many of the comments I’ve read... I found myself not tuning into Hyram about 6 months ago..I just think he’s overly judgmental & sometimes even hypocritical.
And one of my favorite things (and I noticed after a couple of them) When he intros a Reaction Vid for a younger series actor, or maybe a Tik-Toker... He’ll be like, “ OH MY GOD, I have been SO EXCITED to make this video about ‘so&so’!!!! (Totally fan-boying) Now until yesterday- I’d never heard of them, but I think they did a movie~ or was it a Net-.. flix... serieeees????”
And the he’ll mispronounce their name.
Really? You were SO excited about this person you’d NEVER heard of or seen work from?? Um ok.
