"After [my first meeting with John Cage] I brought John a string quartet. He looked at it a long time and then said, 'How did you make this?' I thought of my constant quarrels with Wolpe, and how just a week before, after showing a composition of mine to Milton Babbitt and answering his questions as intelligently as I could, he said to me, 'Morton, I don't understand a word you're saying.' And so, in a very weak voice I answered John, 'I don't know how I made it.'
The response to this was startling. John jumped up and down, and with a kind of high monkey squeal, screeched, 'Isn't that marvelous. Isn't that wonderful. It's so beautiful, and he doesn't know how he made it.' Quite frankly, I sometimes wonder how my music would have turned out if John had not given me those early permissions to have confidence in my instincts." -Morton Feldman (from "Liner Notes")

Absolutely inspired ! And to think he HEARD all of this internally - the same as Chopin and Debussy, for example.

No the dude aint using tape loops, this is as pure as it gets. By the way, the dude's name is Morton Feldman who is in my opinion one of the greatest American composers. And the volume is fine, like FireFire says, it is supposed to be quiet. I especially like his late piano works For Bunita Marcus and Triadic Memories (Sabine Liebner), this is somewhat more difficult to digest. Thanks a lot for posting though!!

Yes, Feldman's music is beautiful. Mysteriously(mystically?) soft and exquisitely balanced, with enough shifts to keep the ear interested.
I wish those people who stumble onto these recordings and hate them would take our advice and try to actually hear the music. Putting aside conventional expectations is the vital first step, I believe.

Yes they are as well, but at the same time you know what I mean! There is an esthetic difference between tape loops and for example piano or string quartet. Perhaps you should try to define it :-).

So tape loops aren't, by definition, pure?

Can someone please explain to me what's so great about this? I really don't get it. It's just 80% silence with some random sounds in between.
