Debate: Cats vs Dogs, with Will Self and John Gray

  • It’s the issue that’s more divisive than Brexit, more polarising than politics. The world is full of animal lovers but we can’t agree on which pet is more worthy of our love - the loyal, obedient dog, or the inscrutable, capricious cat.

    Having numerous Cats and Dogs during my lifetime, I find the personality and demeanor to be the main question. Had destructive personalities in both. My favorites were 2 mild mannered cats. They followed me like a dog, waited for me to arrive home from work. In the last case they meowed in satisfaction and then went about their business. They required less maintenance. They sleep with us, wake us up like they have a biological clock. Love dogs also but getting older, cats are less maintenance, especially with the advent of “self cleaning” litter boxes. Also if you go on holiday, a cat can be left alone with dogs they need daily care.

      I've been saying since forever, if you're a "cat person" or a "dog person", you very clearly haven't taken enough effort to appreciate one or the other. Just because they are the two most popular domesticated house pets doesn't mean it needs to be a competition like Xbox vs Playstation.

    So many things said here are not true, I've enjoyed many cats and many dogs, cats are just as loyal and devoted and dependent as dogs if you give them the same amount of attention dogs are often given. And a number of dogs I've ended up with or without have chosen other individuals to love and moved to other households according to their preference. This weird misunderstanding of cats and dogs is a desperate attempt of humans to project their fears and flaws on cats and all animals to different degrees. As dominant groups do to vulnerable groups all the time. As one of many examples european colonizers claimed indigenous Americans were 'brutal and ignorant and violent and unpredictable' what an accurate description of themselves. Lets examine ourselves as we seem to be incapable of 'seeing' other animals. And as our entire economy depends on exploiting animals we shouldn't be too surprised we are unable to see them with any accuracy. If you want to know about animals ask someone who doesn't eat them or use them for any self interested purpose and who has spent many many years living along side them without exploiting them in any way .. farmers and most academics don't fall into this category...then you might start to hear some truth about who other animals are..but don't hold your breath ..denigrating other species is a human pass time.

    • @kiwitrainguy
      @kiwitrainguy 2 года назад +1

      I think it all (or at least mostly) comes down to how the cat, dog or indeed any other animal is treated and regarded by their human owners/companions. If you are stand-offish with them, they will probably treat you them same and if you show them affection, they will respond in kind. It's about conditioning and behaviour in a group.

      yes thats been my experience with multiple species, misunderstanding and mischaracterizing other species and refusing to recognize their unique individual characters and preferences and reactions to their environment and the way they are treated but preferring to lump them into categories devised by our often willful ignorance of who they are, usually leads directly to neglect and deliberate or inadvertent abuse.
      it drives me up the wall when humans start defining other species, our descriptions lack any humility, we don't even know and understand ourselves!
      if you've ever read seventeenth century white slave owners descriptions of black people its frighteningly similar to humans descriptions of other species. Also similar to upper class English describing working class English not so long ago.
      We choose not to try to understand who we exploit.
      The mission statement of science by Francis Bacon in mid seventeenth century says it all...science is the accumulation of knowledge in order to dominate nature and other species..
      This bizarre mischaracterization of humanities place in nature has created a culture of astounding ignorance and cruelty to other species.

    A more interesting question is why do some humans hate or denigrate other animals? Cats or any other animal? This question wouldn't be very popular because so many of the self proclaimed intelligentsia hate and denigrate cats and other animals. The answer to this unpopular question would be embarrassing for everyone. Malignant narcissism. Not very intelligent and extremely dangerous and very destructive to all of our lives. Unfortunately its also normalized, invisible and pandered to by academia.

    Dogs give, cats take ..... that’s the headline here... and can often reflect those who like one or the other .... dogs have emotional intelligence, cats could care less about your feelings / and dogs are actually useful members of society, unless anyone knows of seeing- eye (guide) cats

    • @GR33TINGSEARTHL1NGS
      @GR33TINGSEARTHL1NGS 4 года назад +4

      Your naïve comment just shows how much experience with cats you have. I've spent my entire life around both, and the idea that dogs give and cats take is beyond stupid. How do dogs give? In a social way? Do you think cats don't offer any kind of social giving? Have you never met an anti-social dog? Have you never met a cat who displays huge amount of affection?
      The cat who lives with my father is a massively valued member of the family who brings a lot of happiness. They care massively about each other. The idea that one animal might be "better" than the other is a shallow debate to get involved in.

    • @weirdunclebob
      @weirdunclebob 4 года назад +5

      Dogs also take and cats also give. Your limited experience with cats (and possibly dogs) is showing. Cats also have emotional intelligence but they usually only show it to people that are worthy: you're clearly not. You're right that cats could care less but that's because you don't know English very well. If someone doesn't care at all, then they can't care less. If they care a little bit, then they "could care less". Capiche? That's a typical US American mistake.
      Valuing a sentient being's worth on whether they are "useful" members of society is troubling. All sentient beings can be valuable members of society even if their only role is 'companion animal' of 'friend'. For many people, a companion animal is THE MOST useful member of society to them. You should enlighten yourself.
