Pralognan La Vanoise - Courchevel Lac du Rateau

Long hike, partly off-trail, where forests, mountain pastures, lakes, scree, and passes mix for the greatest pleasure.
Itinerary
From the Pont de Gerlon car park (1592 m), go down the road a little before taking the path to the left which goes up towards the Col des Saulces (2456 m). We first reach, after a section with a steeper slope, a fork leading to the left to Petit Mont Blanc. We continue on a gentler sloping section which leads us to the pass.
We then leave a path on the left leading to Col du Mône and go back down the track which winds between the mountain pastures (it is possible to cut the bends in certain places) towards the Chalets de la Grande Val. Before reaching these, we take a path near the Chalet de la Petite Val which rushes due south into the Combe du Rateau.
The trace, sometimes barely visible, leads to Lac du Rateau (2441 m). We go around it to the right to begin the climb towards the Col du Rateau (2688 m). The path quickly gives way to scree where there are numerous cairns. A final steep slope allows you to reach the pass located between the Aiguille du Rateau and the Roche Nue.
We begin the descent into the scree and continue into the mountain pastures. On this section, cairns are rare and you must therefore navigate visually to reach the path which descends from the Col de Chanrouge. We then turn right and go due north towards Lac du Pêtre (2282 m), which we pass to reach the Chalets de la Grande Val.
We go around them by taking the track which goes first towards the South then towards the East to reach the Chalet de la Petite Val. We begin the path in the opposite direction to that followed on the way up and thus return to the Pont de Gerlon.
