I saw that MECC loading screen and woah, 3rd grade flashbacks! There was one of these games that I LOVED called "Brain Drain". It was a puzzle game. You were in this house and you had to reach the top floor for some reason.. I'll be damned if I can find it. LOVED that game. It was tough (for a 3rd grader), but it was really fun! :)

I'm guessing you've never seen the Atari games from the ancient 1970s. Those graphics were just solid blocks of one color on backgrounds of another color. The stuff on Oregon Trail looks advanced by comparison. : )

This game somehow reminded me of a hand-drawn, story-driven game about dragons called Golden Treasure: The Great Green, in which you play as a dragon, starting from an egg. I'd say that it's a visual novel with choice-based, turn-based, RPG-ish elements to it. Perhaps you can look into it?
