Cisco ASA Firewall Active/Standby Failover Configuration - Step by Step

The reason you must type failover active on the primary standby is because preempt for failover firewall is not avail on single context mode firewalls. That is why you must tell primary standby to be active.
If you are connecting a new RMA or moved firewall back up to the network. First turn off the firewall you are adding, plug up the Ethernet cables to the firewll you are adding including mgmt and failover links. Power on the firewall you are adding. Let them sync and type failover active on the primary standby. Job done

ASA will automatically assign virtual MAC addresses and manage their moving to the newly active unit
