  • Swathing barley in Sask. I converted this video from an old VHS tape so the quality is not great. The Massey 35 swather was new to me so I was still learning the fine art of cutting height and square corners. It was a great swather.

    hi, its September 2020 and this video popped up on my main screen so am checking it out, swathing in 1988.... i wish is still had my dad, i remember him talking about 1988 but i just don't remember anything he said, wish i could ask him, i guess there will be hundreds more things i wish i listen more closely too when dad was still alive

    Awesome video, good job. I was looking through the comments and noticed you had a lot of "armchair experts" leaving rude comments. Just ignore those idiots, I can almost guarantee they never were behind the wheel of a tractor and swather.

      I don't mind the knowitalls. They help create more traffic on the channel. Anyway, I'm the guy that swathed thousands of acres over the years with that outfit and I think I know what I'm doing. Others may differ and thats ok. Thanks for your comment.

    This 21 foot Massey 35 was "new to me" in the spring of 88 and was sure a good swather. It would be pretty much identical to your IH 75 and also the JD 580. Still stored indoors and I have not used it in several years so should probably sell it.

    Still a few of those babies swathing today! Simple machine. Surprising tough considering they had a very light body! That crop was good considering how dry it was in 88.

    The swather was "new to me" in the video and it was my first day in the field so if I ran over a few corners I will blame it on that. One fact to note is that not all corners are 90 degrees in this country and it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid running over the swath ends as the corners get ever sharper.

    '88 was a DRY year in Indiana too. Yet to be experienced was 2012 which was much worse....

      We had plenty of mud and water here in 2012.

    This video was taken on my third birthday. Funny thing though I just put down 30 acres with a 21 ft International 75 just yesterday. What model and size swather is that? Versatile #10? The old International we have was sitting in the fence row for over 15 years when I pulled it out a week and a half ago. I'll have maybe 200 bucks in replacing bearings and it goes damn slow but it is a heck of a lot cheaper than hiring it done. Cool video

    those were good swathers, we have a 21' IH 75. you must have been doing pretty good in '88 cause a 2090 would've been quite new back then lol

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  8 лет назад +2

      That 2090 is a 1980 model. I bought it when it had about 400 hours on it. Not new but like new. My only regret was having to trade off a really nice 930 to buy the 2090..

      @rempellegacyranch4965 8 лет назад

      +roosty6 my Grandpa had a 930, I think the 2090 would be quite a bit more tractor though.

    it still amazes me that most guys that ran pull type swathers never learned how to make corners properly, always running over the prior swath,,then wondering why they had loss on the corners. If you pull the tractor to the left just before you get to the corner and just cut the corner and leave a couple of plants standing you have less loss then if you run over the swath and the combine can corner faster

    What kind of case tractor is it we have a case 2470

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  4 года назад

      Its a 2090. Newer than the 70 series you have. Im still running that same tractor now.

  • @Northern_Farmer
    @Northern_Farmer 11 лет назад +1

    so you have loss if you leave it standing to

  • @MrBrokefarmer
    @MrBrokefarmer 6 лет назад

    Yes I agree. A pull type tramps way less and is faster. Canola did them in!

  • @rydstallion75
    @rydstallion75 6 лет назад +2

    Just curious how high you have that tractor revving while you're cutting?

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  6 лет назад +1

      To get 540 pto speed they recommend 2100 rpm on the tach but I've rarely run this over 1800 as it seems plenty fast enough. Same for hay conditioner and baler.

    • @rydstallion75
      @rydstallion75 6 лет назад +3

      roosty6 yeah, I've had the same unit swathing before and I ran it at pto speed (2100) , but you're right, if you're going a little slower then 1800 would be fine. You're videos are good, I enjoy seeing that older stuff still farming.

      I haven't used this Massey in probably 7 years since I got the John Deere self propelled. But the Massey is in the shed in case I need it.

    What was the purpose of swathing? Never heard of it. When it came time we just combined.

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  7 лет назад +2

      This was 1988. At the time and for a good many years before, it was standard practice to swath the grain so it would ripen in the swath and allow combining. Otherwise you would have to wait for the green patches to ripen which could take quite a while. We don't see as much swathing of cereals now but most canola is swathed green and lays weeks before it is ready to harvest.

    I know all about not having all 90 degree corners as I live in pothole country. There are ways around running over the corners is all I am saying. Better to leave some standing, maybe a foot or 2 rather then run over say half the width of the swather.

  • @Northern_Farmer
    @Northern_Farmer 11 лет назад

    Yea but do it without running over the swath and without leaving any standing!

  • @cormus1
    @cormus1 11 лет назад +1

    ok you are not hearing what I am saying,, with a few plants standing at the corners the loss will be less then running over the swath with the tractor, sometimes twice. That's like taking the tractor and running over the crop while its standing on all the corners and not being able to recover the seeds as they are threshed out on the ground. Just stop and think about it for a second. People can be so bullheaded sometimes.

  • @starks1414
    @starks1414 11 лет назад +2

    I wouldn't leave anything standing. looks sloppy and running over the corners I don't see how you could notice any losses. you run over a round if you SP or pull type. just hate the look of missed corners.
