He has no choice but to summon wolves as those are his main tempo cards. However, a 3/3 can hit a scarab twice and kill it while still surviving. A 1/1 dies and leaves an extra 1/4 on board. The fact he summoned the wolf isn't relevant to whether it was a good trade or not.
