Hakim completely divorces the referendum from context. It was essentially asking people if they supported Gorbachev's continued reforms and the extension of greater rights under a more autonomous and federalised USSR with more political freedoms. With hindsight, we know the USSR was about to collapse but the people voting did not know that and it's incredibly bad analysis to project backwards the idea that they were basically voting whether to keep the USSR together or not. They thought the USSR was going to be sticking around and were essentially being asked if they supported the reform package, human rights and federalisation. This is why there's 0 contradiction between the fact that the vast majority of people in Ukraine and Central Asia voted in favour of this referendum and then even more voted for independence. This makes no sense from the ML narrative perspective, they voted to keep the USSR and then a few months later voted overwhelmingly to leave? It makes sense that he just ignores this fact rather than attempt to analyse it. He also just totally ignores the mass protests happening throughout the country and other details like the Ukrainian referendum passing with an addendum that stated "Ukrainian law should supersede Soviet law". Hakim will cry about "naunce" when analysing the German-Soviet non-aggression pact and then will just polemically reduce the 1991 referendum down to a cartoonishly simplistic and clearly ideologically motivated understanding.

A person from a country which was part of the first NATO enlargement after the Cold war here - we had a referendum, majority voted yes and we celebrate anniversaries of joining.

You would think Hakim being Iraqi would make him more sympathetic to Ukraine.

How is he not sympathetic to Ukraine? Most of the video is him discussing how Ukraine got exploited by western imperialism, in quite a similar way as Iraq too.

@@nathandrake5544Yeah Western, he seems to have 0 interest in the 3 centuries of far more direct and harmful Russian imperialism in Ukraine. This is a game to him, it's not about being consistently anti-imperialist, it's about finding 6 degrees of how is this America's fault to serve his borderline campist ideological presuppositions. Because if he acknowledged the damage Russian imperialism has done to Ukraine he would have to acknowledge the continuity of that exploitation and Russification during the Soviet period. For example he spends so much time making vague gestures at Western money spent in Ukraine prior to the 2004 election and doesn't mention any far more impactful Russian interference such as the use of natural gas prices to influence Ukrainian politics or the literal busing in of Russians from over the border to vote in the election. He also removes all Ukrainian agency and treats their desires as borderline astroturfed (the same opinion as Russian fascists funnily enough). The fact is bribes don't sustain revolutions and Colour Rev theory is just BS. Russia tried it in 2013 by paying protestors in Eastern and Southern Ukraine and the vast majority of them disintegrated the moment they had significant police push back because believe or not people don't risk their lives for $25 USD a day. An actual Marxist would be able to deduce that maybe after 300 years of the impact of Russian imperialism Ukrainians naturally sought the geopolitical rival bloc for protection from said imperialism. But to Hakim its far more important to find a way to dunk on the US (even though there's about a million ways to legitimately do this) rather than actually care what oppressed peoples want.
