    I've been using this order, and it works well. It maintains most of the chronology without having to bounce between series too much:
    * 01 - Stargate movie
    * 02 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 1.1 to 8.2
    * 03 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 1.1 to 1.15
    * 04 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 8.3 to 8.20
    * 05 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 1.16 to 2.1
    * 06 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 9.1 to 10.2
    * 07 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 2.2 to 3.4
    * 08 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 10.3 to 10.12
    * 09 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 3.5 to 3.19
    * 10 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 10.13 to 10.20
    * 11 - Stargate: The Ark of Truth
    * 12 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 3.20 to 5.1
    * 13 - Stargate: Continuum
    * 14 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 5.2 onwards.
    * 15 - Stargate Universe, All

      I like this order a lot, and if I were to add a fourth option it would be this. This added refinement basically lets you watch one show in bigger chunks (order #2) while removing the downside of having to wait a full season for cliffhangers to be resolved. You treat every 2-parter and 3-parter as a single unit, even when they straddle two seasons.
      Two thumbs UP! Maybe it's worth a follow-up video at some point.

    • @GateWorldDotNet
      @GateWorldDotNet  3 года назад +8

      That would be awesome. I wonder if the streamers can't rig this because they have to treat each show as an individual licensed product. Their license to one might lapse while the others don't. So the best they could do is make each subsequent show "Recommended" to viewers.

    • @Seluecus1
      @Seluecus1 3 года назад +2

      This isn't stargate related, but Disney + has a list specifically for the Chronology of the MCU, which is awesome. But they also own it, so streaming services (like netflix and hulu) probably won't have a chronological setup.

    • @Jon0387
      @Jon0387 3 года назад +1

      Disney plus also had something like that for Simpsons, for example around Halloween they would put up all the Halloween episodes or Christmas episodes during Christmas. However they didn’t play the next episode in the list, when you selected one episode it would play the next episode in the season afterwards instead of the next episode in the list. I always found that disappointing.

    For me I started with the movie Continuum without really knowing anything about the franchise and thought it was fun, it also reminded me of a film I watched on the TV once (Stargate 1994). So when I saw it I watched SG:U on Netflix, and the gate and the ship just gripped my soul and never let go after that. Then I wanted more so I watched all 10 seasons of SG-1 (though I mostly disliked the first season and certain episodes in the second) and loved most of it. Watched both movies (continuum again as I got way more enjoyment out it the second time around). And finished with SG:A.

    Oddly, I watched the franchise in reverse order, starting with SGU, then Atlantis and finally SG1. I missed out on some of the references and callbacks but I think it allowed me to judge SGU on its own, without comparing it to the previous shows. SGU was an incredible show that deserved to finish telling its story but after watching Atlantis and SG1, I can understand why some fans didn't like the radically different tone. Overall, SG1 will always be my favorite but you can't go wrong with any of them.

    Hey Darren, I sent David a Word document with the chronological order for all Stargate episodes. It's in US airdate order which is the DVD order also and it identifies multipart episodes that aren't labeled part 2, 3, etc.
    When it comes to SG-1 seasons 8-10 and Atlantis seasons 1-3, I meshed the two series together but when it comes to the multipart episodes, depending if SG-1 or Atlantis starting a story arc first, I kept the multi-parts together to keep the story consistent instead of going back and forth between series. This is keeping a chronological way to view them.
    As for the two directed to DVD Stargate movies, they're inserted at the same locations you mentioned in your first viewing order.
    As for Stargate Universe, since there's no crossover, just watch it through beginning to end after Atlantis.
    Definitely start out watching the Stargate 1994 movie before SG-1 and I agree the Directors Cut of Children of the Gods is better than the other two versions, especially if you have young viewers. The cropped version makes me cringe more than the cringy dialogue of the original because I have a widescreen TV and it's terribly annoying to watch anything 4:3 ratio on it.
    As for Stargate Origins Catherine, I agree you need to watch it after everything else. Two of the actors in Origins are legacy actors from the 1994 movie and Atlantis. The American Agent in Catherine is the all grown up little girl Catherine Langford, played by Kelly Vint Castro, who was at the beginning of the 1994 movie and her father is played by Connor Trinneer who played the Wraith Todd in Atlantis. I've had to correct people on the internet who thought Origins was how all Stargate episodes were like and they refused to watch the other series, but after explaining it was created after the run of the franchise and the original showrunners had nothing to do with it, they gave the franchise another chance and loved it. Origins was available on DVD and I bought mine on Amazon.
    As for Stargate Infinity, personally it reminded me of Hanna Barbera type animation like Tarzan and The Lone Ranger back in the '70s. By that I mean it's drawn very well and the dramatic story moves along at that kind of pace, it's not cartoonish at all like the Flintstones or any other kids cartoon. It's not part of canon but I do like that they use motorcycles on the other side of the gate instead of walking everywhere which is one of the questions I always had about the other series of them always walking for miles when a motorcycle easily fit through the gate.

      Connor: You mean Michael here (not Todd).
      Origins never had a physical release. If you have a DVD copy I would love to see it!
      Infinity: It definitely has some cool elements, like taking small vehicles through the gate. I'd love to see a "Stargate: The Next Generation"-style live-action show one day that is set in the near future, rather than the present day.

      @JohnFourtyTwo 3 года назад +1

      @@GateWorldDotNet Hey Darren, Glad you liked the viewing order. I forgot to mention earlier is there isn't a gap at the end of those seasons in question with the multi-episode arcs with one series being more or less than the other, they actually balance out. If you want, I could send you a copy or David should have it also.
      Yep, Michael, not Todd. I don't know how I screwed that one up because I was thinking Michael but Todd came out, but he'll always be remembered as Charles "Trip" Tucker III to me for his role on Enterprise.
      Shortly after Origins was aired in the movie version Amazon had a physical DVD which I ordered. I don't have it on me at the moment, it's about 900 miles away with all my other DVDs and Blu-Rays since I'm in the process of moving.

    I basically alternate between SG-1 and Atlantis (when they were running at the same time) but usually watched multi part episodes together (So I'd watch both parts of Reckoning together and all three parts of the Seige together). It was pretty close to your alternating episodes setup, but I don't like switching to the other show before watching the cliffhanger get resolved if I don't have to. It also helped that by the time Atlantis started I was watching the shows regularly so when I actually devised my order it wasn't a big deal if I didn't watch it in an ideal order.
    Stargate's definitely a pretty wild ride, and I recommend anyone watch it, especially if you're interested in Science Fiction, Mythology (although not too attached to it that the mistakes/artistic licence will bother you), or just like fun adventures with crazy awesome things happening. Stargate SG-1 still tops my list of Science Fiction TV shows (and possibly wins on Live Action shows in general) and Atlantis isn't too far behind, and Universe was pretty good once you get past the first half season or so, but never reached the heights of either of it's predecessors, although that may have been due to being cut short.

    You didn't mention that Children of the Gods Final Cut removes the cliffhanger at the end that's very important for episode 1x02. Of course, it's more of a mystery what's going on if you watch the Final Cut instead I suppose. But I do like the original pilot's cliffhanger.

    • @GateWorldDotNet

      I like the cliffhanger as well. Strictly speaking it's not necessary for understanding what's going on in 1x02, though (unless there's a "Previously On" recap with that Kawalsky reveal) it delays when the audience finds out about Kawalsky.

    A strategy I've used is something between the alternating episodes and alternating seasons, where I only switch before the crossovers, or around the half season mark. Not so many crossovers in SG-1/Atlantis (more overlapping stories, I guess), but it worked great when I had to go through Arrowverse and their something like 4 crossovers a season (over 5 shows when crisis comes around).

Like, oh my god they don’t have that technology yet! Hahaha. But it was great to see them grow and evolve. I think I rewatched Atlantis episodes that were linked to SG-1, but I don’t know if I rewatched the entire seasons alternating episodes. I like that even though they are connected they are also independent, with their own stories, no need to watch everything to be able to enjoy. Of course, some stuff will be lost, but not enough to make it a less then good experience. Unfortunately no Stargate on Brazil’s streaming services. Sad and brazilian.... kkkkkkkk

    apart from the big two parters like new order > rising, and other connected episodes, i quite liked alternating disc by disc. mostly being 4 episodes of sg1 then 4 of atlantis. avoids the 'rewinding' but also gives more consistency of story. also much less swapping dvds between every episode, as long as they always go back into the correct case :)

    The biggest blessing we have right now is that Stargate is not being aired on television right now or else it would be suffering the same fate as Terminator, Star Trek, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, the MCU, Dr Who, 007 and so many other franchises. The politically ideology would kill the fanbase and the franchise. MGM is going to learn that the hard way with their new bond movie.
    As for viewing order, i would say series by series without jumping between series as your first run through. It takes some time to grow to new characters so I think you would gain a better appreciation of them watching multiple seasons at a time than breaking em up.

    This is the order I recommend for viewing:
    1. Stargate original movie
    2. SG1 Seasons 1-8
    3. SG Atlantis Seasons 1-5
    4. SG1 Seasons 9-10
    5. SG1 Movies (Ark then Continuum)
    6. SG Universe Seasons 1-2
    7. Origins and SG:TAS
    I feel with this order, you get the most consistency without having to keep switching between shows. Season 8 of SG1 is basically the end of SG1's first run and I feel seasons 9-10 are almost a different show that can be viewed without even seeing the previous seasons. Atlantis and Universe are best watched without interruption from switching back and forth and they really don't reference SG1 too much to where you would need to see SG1 if you didn't want to.

    @JD96893 3 года назад +3

    i'd just like to mention that if you do plan on watching only key episodes, you should only do so if you've seen the series before. The stargate series as a franchise actually has very few 'filler' or 'stand alone' episodes. I know that sounds crazy, pretty much every other sifi series is stuffed with filler episode! But unlike other sifi series Stargate has a knowledge and technological progression in the series, so one episode might be mostly irrelevant to the main plot but they may have discovered some key piece of information or technology that will let them do something important in a future episode. Also i recommend watching the series side by side.

    • @GateWorldDotNet
      @GateWorldDotNet  3 года назад +1

      That's good advice. Many younger viewers have grown up in an age of television serialization, and can get overly impatient with episodic TV that has 20 to 26 episodes every season. I think folks do themselves a disservice if they never watch Stargate in full.

      @@GateWorldDotNet yes, i was in the same boat when i decided to rewatch Stargate for the 4th or 5th time XD. I didn't want to watch the whole series due to its length and fortunately quickly found/remembered that almost every episode ends up being mentioned and therefore of relevance in a later episode/s. The series was very well done in that aspect and also in its complexity. I feel like a lot of sifi series are really dumbed down compared to Stargate as far as lore goes, i mean stargate can get really confusing and complicated sometimes.

    I believe some episodes in SG1-S8 were aired out of order (or are on the DVD out of order), and there is an extra long episode too. I feel this should have been mentioned. • @GateWorldDotNet
      @GateWorldDotNet  3 года назад +1

      There's some slight variations especially in the early seasons, where the DVD / syndication order varies a little bit from the original cable airing order. Because the show was so episodic it usually doesn't matter for continuity's sake. But I'll bring this up in a follow up video.

      This is the great thing that MGM has sitting on the franchise table. They have a perfect way to start the franchise back up. They get to maintain continuity, wrap up things AND hand off the baton to new people in a way that make perfect sense. Being able to bring back old cast from all the franchises, keeping some and lots of cameos going forward - and introduce us to the SGC of today. Is it still in the mountain? has it been moved? who knows about it? who's in charge now? What happened to everyone? And where are we going now? So simple. Lots of money to be made. I adored Star Gate SG1 in high school, but lost track of it until after the series finished. I picked up at seasons 9 and 10, then went back to re-watch the season 1-8. Honestly that was best for me due to the much darker tone and subject matter in seasons 9 and 10, as well as the change in cast, which I would have felt as jarring if I watched them all in order. I think of seasons 9 and 10 as their own chapter in SG1, whereas season 8 is a great cap-off to many of the plot threads for the whole show.

But it was one of her favorite shows, so she decided to start me off with her favorite version: Stargate Atlantis. Atlantis was a perfectly fine show, but starting there was perhaps not the greatest idea. There were constant callbacks to SG-1 that she would either have to explain or leave me puzzling over. Like the episode where *surprise* the mystery alien is an Asgard! What's an Asgard? Or who is this "Carter" person? So, that was less than ideal.
    Eventually, I watched SG-1 and Atlantis in the correct order (after having watched Universe in the wrong order, but I'm not planning to watch Universe again) and realized how much I had been missing. And actually, despite liking Atlantis, I do feel that SG-1 is a much stronger show overall. I still think the movie is stupid and the show was forced to keep a little stupidity from the movie, but at least it was usually downplayed in the show so that I only really want to complain about how every alien started speaking English (or complain about the third hit from a Zat gun)

    I didn't know the stories intertwined between SG-1 and Atlantis.
    I tried hard to watch Atlantis but it got too deep into the Raith for me.

    I want to do a video that constructs an accurate chronology like the Star Trek Chronology Project using in universe clues. It is just a matter of having the time to watch it again.

      Not sure if this is the sort of thing you are looking for (in written form), but we have a Stargate Timeline here: www.gateworld.net/wiki/Timeline

      Shame they never finished with a straight to dvd film, of atlantis going back and defeating the rave, finding more zpms, or making more, then flying back, defeating the rave and then a short video of 10 years later and saying whats gone on and before the credits,
      Keep editing this, maybe the government wont allow atlantis to return and shepherds team have to return it and be criminals and can't return to earth and they live their lifes in the peagasus galaxy

    Man!!!! I could have used this a few years ago! I tired watching them in release date, but could t remember which show aired first. I think SGU got really good in its second season, and when I rewatched it for the first time I liked it a lot more than one it originally aired. I may be wrong but is stargate origins cannon? Wouldn’t it come first? Thank you!!! I hope we get a fourth series as well!
    Edit:
    My favorite thing to do is go as long as I can without watching it and then watch it all again. I can’t wait to show my kids stargate. I also take my comment back about stargate origins comment, but if you’ve seen all of the I recommend cannon order.

      There's a section on Origins later in the video. As far as MGM is concerned it is canon, and it does come first in the timeline ... however for reasons I go to in the video, I recommend newcomers not starting here. But for a longtime fan doing a rewatch, I say go for it!

      @@GateWorldDotNet sorry o commented a little early! I agree that newcomers shouldn’t watch it first. I do want to thank you for touching on the final cut of the children of the God’s, it’s the only one I didn’t own but will buy it now!
