The Godfather's Darkest Secret: Why Fredo Corleone is Weak?

- Have you ever thought about why Fredo is the weak link of the family in the Godfather series, where there are strong characters from each other? Throughout the trilogy, Fredo is shown as stupid, weak-willed, and clumsy compared to his siblings. He also has a soft spot for women. When we look at the 110th minute of the second movie, we can clearly see the reason for this situation. Fredo got pneumonia when he was still a baby. He suffers brain damage, possibly as a result of a prolonged febrile illness. But unlike the movie, he is a lovable character in Mario Puzo's novel of the same name and has never betrayed his brother Michael.

If I remember correctly, in the novel Fredo was very capable in hand to hand combat. He was just spineless
I just remember the scene about the Director being a pedophile.
@@JayJay-tm7xw what!!??
@@brownbeaner8005 dude showed up for an audition in Hollywood and there is an entire scene about a pedophile director.
In the book, Fredo was the toughest of the brothers when they were children but he got softer and more insecure as he got older. Probably because Sonny was groomed to be the next Godfather and Michael was the golden child who was given every opportunity so he felt left out and naturally lost his edge. And all the heavy drinking and banging cocktail waitresses two at a time likely didn't help either.
Mf fumbled that gun tho
All of these are things John Cazale brought to the role due to his sheer genius and willingness to take it places you wouldn't ever expect. One of the greatest of all time in my opinion.
How was John Cazale a _"sheer genius"?_ The man was unquestionably a great actor. In fact he was an outstanding actor. The films he was in were some of the best of their time. But I don't get the sheer genius part at all?
Thanks.
@@donarthiazi2443 I think what Mr. Nick was trying to say with the term "sheer genius", is that John Cazale brought a unique spin to the character which was not found in the novel version. I'm sure this decision was influenced by Coppola's directorial decisions, but Cazale expanded on the character beyond the script. In a similar fashion as, for example, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
John Cazale is genius the way he done the acting. If I have to describe it he is like a perfect background in the canvas. There is not a single scene in the trilogy where its character feel unnatural.Whatever if he is afraid after michael learns truth, the scene where he drop the gun after vito shot or his best acting where he is confronted by michael and enter s mood of hysterical rage.Even there his character feels so natural it does not drag your attention even with his extreme reaction your focus return back to michael.Rather it amplifies al pacino acting who is already make you focus on him even greater.
@@donarthiazi2443relax. He added a ton to that and all of his 5 movies. Everytime someone is passionate about something, someone like you has to shit on it

Huh?
each son lacked one of their father's qualities
Michael lacked Vitto's love. Vitto knew Carlo was no good since the first scene but he never hurt Carlo because he didnt want to make his daughter a widow even after Sonny the Don did nothing.
Sonny lacked the Don's discipline and he got lured into Ambush. Vitto waited 2 decades before he killed Don Cicio.
Fredo lacked Vitto's will. Fredo allowed himself to be humiliated and he felt he had nothing. Vito had nothing but built his empire.
the saddest part is Vitto had high hopes for his children and he felt he was a failure
I often compare the actions of Vito to the actions of the father of Humanity in Adam.
Vito may have made a great name for himself as well as established a true family lineage, but his criminal connections and lifestyle ended up being the very thing that condemned and tore his family apart. In essence, they were the ones who truly paid the price for his actions in the long run.
Such is also true in the case of Adam. Although he gained knowledge from eating from the tree of life, it is also at that exact moment that Humanity as a whole fell to evil, with death as our ultimate punishment.
We're born into sin, just as Vito's children were born into a doomed life.
@@brandongravitt9199 what you say is true however I would like to point out
Vitto never wanted this for his children.
Sonny was violent
Freddo was weak
Michael came in as a sense of duty.
It might not mean anything but Vitto jumped or better to say forced into crime so he can provide for his family
U forgot that Michael had the quality of love before his wife was killed cruelly.
"I ordered the death of my brother. He injured me. I killed my mother’s son. I killed my father's son"
I thought he said “he hindered me” . Guess not
Kane and abel
Fredo, you’re nothing to me now, not a brother, not a friend.
I don't wanna know about you or what you do when you see our mother let me know on a day advance so I won't be there
I don't want you near my house
John Cazale is a master actor. He made Fredo iconic. Just as iconic as Vito or Michael.
True!!!! Just as iconic.
Fredo didn't know it was gonna be a hit. He heard there was something in it for HIM, on his own. Fredo had built in resentment and jealousy towards Michael. Michael was the kid brother but he was taking care of Fredo. Fredo hated this.
And his death was necessary, how can a Man who sells his family for an power could breathe
All 3 brothers lack their father's "wholeness" - Mike (Mind), Sonny (Body), and Fredo (Spirit). Due to this lack of self regulated "balance" each one fails, explicitly because they were unable to replicate their father's inherent nature.
Vito became the man he is through tragedy and struggles and made it so that his children wouldn't have too.
He also set up his children to fail. He left them an unstable mess.
@@darrienglass4058 @jonathan2847 I really wish the 3rd movie had focused on the 1st movies implication that going into drugs was going to destroy the family. Had they gone full circle then the entire trilogy would have been a masterpiece.
Mike lacks heart
Sonny lacks mind
Fredo lacks spirit
@@justscrollinginthecomments7930 Fredo doesn't lack spirit, he IS spirit. He's literally described in the movie and book as being the sweetest and most loving of the brothers.
Oh man, gotta love the Godfather. It will always be timeless and legendary.
i still find movie fredo very lovable. just as connie says, he’s so sweet and helpless. john cazale played him so sympathetically too
I guess it was partly down to middle child syndrome. Sonny was the eldest - the tough guy, natural gang leader and the big hope. Michael was the youngest and the brains of the family. He also proved that he was willing to sacrifice for his family, by serving in the army for a while.
He'd always had a place in the family and would have been an invaluable asset to them, in terms of presenting an amiable face to the outside world and having good business sense. He would have had an imprtant role, even if Sonny had lived.
Fredo didn't really fit in and didn't have a niche or role to fit into. He wasn't a tough guy, didn't have a forceful personality and wasn't particularly clever and preferred to enjoy loving the high life. Even though he wanted more responsibility, he was never going to be entrusted with it.
Damn. The thing with “soft spot for women”. Fredo talks about how his mother would say he’s adopted, dropped off by gypsies and this clearly bothers him. Makes too much sense he’s b@nging cocktail waitresses left and right. He’s looking for that validation. #real

You don’t come to Las Vegas and piss off hans solo like that!
Everything happened so fast for Fredo when Vito got shot up and his brain was racing hence why he fumbled the gun. He thought at that moment that Vito was dead. Seeing Vito shot up traumatized Fredo🤷♂️. I never thought Fredo was weak willed but instead, he was too kind hearted and in his family business, that's a huge liability in their line of work.
He was too soft and naive
In the books he's described as one of the toughest when they were kids and he's a competent host - guy who made money in Nevada. The movies are different I suppose..
but still always weak willed
It was supposed the be in movie either, they all changed story because Al Pacino didnt Liked it. And Mario Puzo accepted of fredo's death for only 1 thing: it wont be take a place while their mother alive
Other franchises: Movie decreases the violence of book
The Godfather: Book is a fairytale compared to the movie.
A lot of Coppola's motives were to not to paint Italians in a bad light in spite of the subject matter. The Godfather is anti drugs and under attack from law enforcement and the other families. Michael visits Sicilians who are noble and just trying to survive etc....
He actually did betray his brother, that's what got him killed.
He meant in the novel
@@joejoerunya8908He didn’t betray Michael in the first movie either which was the adaptation of the novel. The second one was entirely new and a sequel to both the novel and adaptationx
As a matter a fact that lied to him they just wanted the drop and he gave it to them when he is in the bed with his wife johny ola calls hime and wanted some info bout michael and he said ti him you got in me a lot of trouble YOU LIED TO ME !
He just wanted to be strong and be the godfather of his own family
@@2milliontipss yes, absolutely, people in the comments fanboy the main character so much...
Fredo being a traitor does not fit in well with the cicilian family values which was the backbone of Vito corleone strength. One thing that is clear from from the novel is that family bond and care was the main strength and hence they would never betray each other. Although the movie was a masterpiece, this specific scenario would have never in the lifetime of don vito.
Imagine if he ran the family like he wanted? 😂
I heard the book says Fredo liked men too.
Fredo likes to hide it but sometimes he pushes out bravery.
He raised his voice at Mike about trying to negotiate a price with Moe Green which you have to be very brave to do that to someone that is as intimidating as Michael.
Fredo is older than Michael. Yes Michael was a cold don but he was still Fredo’s little brother. I doubt Fredo was scared of Michael(well at least at that time)
I like him because he wasn't a bad person and the wrong things he did were due to the resentment he felt from being marginalised, not out of hot headedness like Sonny or coldheartedness like Michael. He didn't have to die.
He was also left on the door step by Gypsies
Vito was displeased with Fredo because Fredo slept with many women. Some time two at a time. Fredo was reckless because of sex all the time and that’s why Vito chose Michael.
Fredo was not weak he just wanted to prove himself worthy , he completed the Hail Mary with his whole heartedly but was shot .
Fredo was sweet kind loving soul he was strong on other ways.
He hasn't got 'brain damge' he's just not a bright or aggressive as his brothers
but who's to say he is all those things WHILE having brain damage?
Fredo was not weak minded but lacked direction. Micheal took over for revenge of the hit on his father. Vito admitted weakness but micheal just stepped up so Vito let him
Fredo fumbled the ball protecting the father.
I think vito saw Fredo as too close to his mother lacking toughness. Vito couldnt get a handle on his mind.
That is a poor excuse, and if that is true that is unrealistic. I've encountered one too many examples from real life with families having strong willed one and a weak willed one. A lamp and a wolf this is very normal and common not because of pneumonia
Long fevers can cause brain damage amongst other things and that was the case for *this* character.
I agree excellero. Coppola completely invented his own version of Fredo to fit _"The Godfather 2"._ And it totally worked, I just wish I knew how Mario Puzo felt about it 🤔
@@donarthiazi2443well, Puzo wrote the script. Maybe it was his idea after all.
“I can do it too! Im SMARRT!!!”
He is exactly that - the runt
The runt is the smallest and weakest....he was injured. Not the same.
No Michael was the runt
Not in the novel. Fredo had always been physically very strong. But he definitely found the playboy-type lifestyle out in Vegas to be entirely to his liking. He was in such severe disfavor with Vito that at one point Vito didn't even want him to come back home.
FFC took massive liberties with the Fredo character. I've never read one way or the other how Mario Puzo felt about it.
@@donarthiazi2443Mario Puzo co-wrote the screenplays with FFC so he was definitely ok with and part of the Fredo character change from book to movie.

Thank you for that information.
John cazale is one the best actors of all time . Underrated and under appreciated. Bro bagged Meryl Streep need I say more 😂
Fredo is my most favorite character in the Godfather. John Kazale was great in this role
He did betray mike
What do you mean? He never turned on Micheal? Yes he did.
3rd movie? What 3rd movie?
Yes , coda , with Antony Garcia ,as Sonny iligetimt child with the girl from his sisters wedding
Fredo suffered brain damage?????? Where was that mentioned in the movie? Seriously, in all the times I've watched the movies, did I miss that bit of information???
I don’t think it is explicitly mentioned just insinuated when as a baby he gets sick - it’s open to interpretation and people have ran with it . I think he was portrayed as docile in the movie to make pt2 more shocking and developed Michaels further descent within his character arc
And with that being said. Michael had Fredo killed
he ate to much gabagool
“ Fredo “ John Cazale died a few years after this was released and the Deer Hunter, lung cancer.
Is the book different from the movie?
I think the way the movie portrayed it was better
That's my little brother. Clumsy, emotional, weak in the brain.... pneumonia explains it all!!!!
I'm Fredo.
Robert De Niro should never been in The Godfather, how in the name of god he got that role I'll never know.
The book is where the truth is. The movies degraded the meaning of the story of the Godfather. READ THE BOOK
I must have gotten pneumonia as a kid then 🤔
I'm gonna read puzos novel. Cause my uncle told me Fredo different in book!
I guess Copeland made the right decision because brother advanced brother and shows her ruthless Michael has become an has to be actually
Who the hell is Copeland?
Lol i knew that 25 yrs ago. But thanks for sharing.
I dont know, its pretty realistic that he betrays... he's the older brother but not the Godfather, hes stupid and weak so hes easily manipulated and I didnt find him loveable, its says that he gets along whatever his father says which means that he has no character.
I still believe he had something to do with his father's shooting
Is fredo killed by michael in the novel?
I always thought he wasn’t their blood brother since that one scene where they said he was dropped off by gypsies
Is he really betrayed his brother or no ?

He never betrayed Michael?
He didn't open the curtains ,....it was Connie, hymen Roth, approached her because he knew she was broke and hated Mike for killing her husband.... Fredo only gave up some information,
