@@h2have643 No one is crying. People are telling us that we are Africans when we are not. We are African descendants. It’s not the same thing. The same way a Nigerian can call themselves an African, I along many other Jamaicans can’t. We don’t ignore nor are we ashamed of our African ancestry, we are taught it before we can even read and write properly.
As an Afro American, I feel Jamaicans when it comes to this argument. I get both sides. We clearly know we’re of west/Central African descent but have built a whole new culture that we’re now proud of. We’re still connected to the parts of the culture we preserved during slavery and turned into something new but we’re just proud of our ethnicity. You can be a proud American, Jamaican, Dominican of African roots💕
Exactly! To undermine us as people shouldn’t be the incentive. We know our heritages “plural” and we have made it unique for ourselves! We do not deny where we came from! We know we are Africans in the diaspora! But we are also Indian, Lebanese, Chinese European indigenous etc… this debate has no grounding or purposeful sentiment. If Africans took the time to actually learn about the diaspora they would also understand that our culture’s are merged hence our diversity! So we have the right to stand firm in our identity! This debate is pointless and flawed!
Majority of us Jamaicans we acknowledge that our ancestors are from Africa...however, just our own motto tells us "OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE🇯🇲" some of us have ancestors who are not entirely from Africa but also East India, Germany, China etc. So that's something to consider when some people deny not being from Africa. JAMAICA is a mosaic of ethnicity, cultural differences etc. So to generalize that a Jamaican whose ancestors are from europe as being from africa is not entirely true.
Why do people get so mad at Jamaicans identifying as Jamaican? Jamaican's are literally taught in school that we are African descendants. It's annoying that Jamaican's not allowed to be loud and proud about where they come from without the reminder of where we come from like we don't know. Say one positive thing about Jamaican culture and it's "but you're African." I feel like it's used as a negative dig also instead of a positive. On top of that we don't even know what part of Africa we are from, do you want us to claim and represent every single West African nation?
I’m Jamaican. Born and raised and most of the people I interact with, in and out of school, don’t want to be associated with Africa. Most Jamaicans think being African is below them and that has to do with how Africa and Africans are being presented to us. Jamaican people think Africans are poor, black magic believers etc. Rastafarians and the maroons do uplift the view of Africans and they do not hesitate to identify as Africans. We are taught in school about our heritage but that’s it. Most Jamaicans neglect the teachings of Marcus Garvey and other pan Africanists. They literally look down on Africans. Yes there are exceptions. I’m a proud Jamaican. And I also identify as African. I may not know exactly where I’m from but I still see myself and other Afro-Jamaicans and as Africans.
@@sheashola5008 it’s not most Jamaicans. I don’t know where u are from but most of us identify with our African descent. U sound like u weren’t even raised in Jamaica cuz the obsession with the African verses Jamaican thing is obviously a oversea thing.
I’m confused. Most Jamaicans I’ve met are really cool and very proud to be Jamaican but also proud of their ancestry. I’ve never heard a Jamaican deny being of African decent. So what is there to debate? I’m African btw. I always felt like Caribbean’s out of all people that decent from Africa acknowledge that fact the most. Americans don’t say they’re European but their ancestors are so.. I don’t get it. Let people be proud to be where they from.
@@janelr1134 Jamaicans don’t deny their ancestry. You can’t deny something that’s quite obvious. But it doesn’t go beyond the historical context. Jamaicans get offended when you refer to them as Africans (and you can see that in most of the comments). I’m from Trelawny btw. Went to Westwood High School. I’m an Sub-Saharan African History, and a public health major in college. Yes we have our own national identity and as Jamaicans we are a very proud people. But look at the difference between how a Jamaican national view their relationship with Africa vs. someone from the Rastafari movement, a Pan Africanist, and the maroons. It’s very different. In the US and countries like it, race, culture and ethnicity are discussed heavily compared to Jamaica and other Caribbean countries. One reason being that the cultural, racial and ethnic differences are on a much wider scale in the US. Yes Jamaica says out of many one people, but majority of us here have a similar cultural or racial background.
When Jamaicans are referring to being Jamaicans they are referring to their ethnicity (culture) and nationality. The Jamaican Culture just like other Caribbean islands' and West Indian culture has accents of African culture but is not entirely made up of African culture but rather a mixture of the many ethnicities that was brought to those islands and mainlands. I'm Afro Guyanese meaning I have African heritage and am proud but culturally I'm not African but Guyanese due to being raised in and practice the Guyanese culture the same applies with Jamaicans.

As a Jamaican, most Jamaican's know it's pretty damn obvious our ancestors were from Africa( taught from primary school). Like most black people in the Caribbean, same with Asians. But as an island, our culture is a melting pot of other ethnicities. I feel like Black people especially though, (US or England born) over generations, or moved, have been increasingly obsessed with the idea of coming from Africa when I know some of yall can't even name 5 countries on the continent. A majority of black Jamaican's are of Nigerian descent(proven), as white Americans are of European descent.
@@tsuyuasui7297 at the end of the day its hard for most black caribbean people to state exaclty where their African lineage came from. So the majority of them would say they come from Ghana and Nigeria. But you have to remember that these countries had the ports where the slave ships would sail from. So essentially slaves could have been taken from any African nation, but ultimately they were brought to the west coast to start the journey. That's why when you go to Jamaica you can see the mixture of Africans
This is when DNA testing can be helpful. I’m Jamaican, and I found out I have Nigerian cousins (mostly Igbo). My Ghanaian percentage was very low. I would recommend taking a test if you’re serious in wanting to know where in Africa you can “connect” to.

We don’t know so we just say it to say it… but we weren’t raise with African culture, we’ve never had African cuisine. We don’t party to African music, and we aren’t taught a lot of African history in school. So we’re truthfully just acknowledging the fact that we don’t know who or where we come from every single day. But what we do know is how to be American. How to dress American, speak English, and eat American food. So why must we have to acknowledge it? I identify as AA, just food for thought.

I don't understand the statement of African Americans have no idea where they're from/origin bit when their foundation is the same as Jamaicans? If you ask a Jamaican in Jamaica where they're from, they will say a city/town in Jamaica. If you ask a AA where they're from they will say a city/state in the US- how does that differ from Jamaicans or any other Black group in the Americas? Ultimately, Black People based on dna/genetics are African but many are not African by culture/heritage. on another note- Beyonce is an Icon on her way to becoming a legend. She does not need number ones or even sell tons of records at this point in her career. Her impact in for the last 22+ years is enough.

We understand where we came from but it’s so disrespectful when people try and wipe our culture and island away from us just based on ancestry and irs like they only like to remind Jamaicans?
I'll give my perspective as an east African. I feel like the Africans who want Jamaicans/Caribbean people to identify as African are just insecure in their own "africanness". Although Africa is a continent with numerous cultures, east Africa is very different from north Africa but, it is often regarded as one type of mixed culture. And if you ask outsiders about "African culture" often, the first image that will pop into their heads will be starving children, poverty, poor healthcare and education system, disease e.t.c. But if questioned about Caribbean culture, such images do not arise. There are more positive images, beautiful beaches, friendly welcoming people, music running through the streets etc. So I think some Africans in turn have some kind of insecurity or jealousy. "Those Caribbeans think they are better than us cause the white people said so, no they are just as black as us. They should remember that they are just as low as us cause they also came from Africa." That's kind of the feelings of the ones who want you to identify as African. Don't take it too seriously though, look at it as an appreciation of your culture. They envy your culture so bad they want you to throw it away so you can "be on their low level".
Also Jamaicans are known for their athletic abilities in sprinting. There aren't any African countries that are well known for sprinting (Kenya and Ethiopia are known for long distance though, but it is well known that sprints are more watched than long distance)so that is another source of jealousy for some Africans.
@@fatumaa6927 no one thinks we’re superior lol. I think a lot of people confuse it with being proud. If we proudly speak about our country just like everyone else we’re always reminded
Africans aren’t just African, they’re Nigerian, Congolese, Ghanaian, Ethiopian etc etc being African doesn’t completely describe them because their individual countries carry different traditions and cultures. West Indians are African by descent but culturally we have something different.
Not all Jamaicans are African people because as the motto says "out of many one people" so you'll have people being born in Jamaica therefore being Jamaican but can originate from China, India, etc.
Then they are not Jamaican, they’re Chinese, Indian etc. Why are black people so inclusive of others when they aren’t inclusive with you? That’s why white Americans are simply called ‘Americans’ but black Americans are called ‘African American’. That’s why black people are referred to as ‘British’ and not ‘English’. The term out of many one people enables these nations to take over with the guise of being ‘Jamaican’.
@@lacianstewart5585 hence the term Jamaican is with reference to the Jamaicans ‘shipped’ there who are now the blood and soil of the Jamaican nation today. This term does not refer to you. Also, it is a myth that all natives died in Jamaica.

@Naya’s Cookbook Jamaicans are a mixed people you can’t make a general claim and say Jamaicans are from Africa, when there’s Chinese, Indo and white Jamaicans.
The Jamaican part was bare awkward 🤦🏾. At the end of the day us Caribbean people are African descent. Just like how Ugandan people are east African or Nigerian are west African. The problem is the wording cuz the Caribbean isn’t situated in Africa, so when you say your African it feels like you’re taking away our culture. Also, we are from many African nationalities, therefore we can’t claim exactly what part, which is why again we should be addressed as African descent. Simple

@@naomibeautymind6226 With white people they are kind of like at the top of the racial hierarchy so people don't really ask them to identify with Europe because whether they are Australian, European or American they are still white, meaning that either way they will still be at the top. But with black people, the ones who are outside of Africa, you'll find many Africans telling Caribbeans to identify with Africa. Reason being even though black people are at the bottom of the racial hierarchy, there is still are hierarchy within that in terms of "culture". White people view the Caribbean in a more positive light than Africa. With the Caribbean the first image that pops up into their heads is visiting lovely beaches, lovely people, beautiful music etc. But with Africa it's poverty, diseases, poor healthcare etc. So I think some Africans are jealous that you guys are viewed in a more positive light, so they want you to identify with Africa to remind you that "No you are still African, don't go thinking you are different from us and better because the colonizer said so." It's something like that. (I'm east African by the way, Kenyan to be exact)

Some people have a very warped perception of black folks in the U.S. Some are aware- but may feel as though their “home country” was colonized- yet they know where they are from. But they forget-the U.S was once a part of Britain:13 colonies- and slavery occurred there as well( and all over the world). Lots of people don’t know due to no fault of their own-only certain facts were savored via oral traditions, and there are certain parts of history that some governments/institutions would prefer to keep hidden. Thank you for saying this because it pains me when people try to argue with me about where I’m from. I’m from Mauritius and my ancestors are of Indian descent. Being brown doesn’t make me Indian, my origins are from there and that’s it. People need to educate themselves more!

Our motto is literally “Out of many one people” which points to the diverse backgrounds that our people come from. It is so ignorant for people to equate blackness with being African or to assume that everyone in Jamaica is primarily of African descent.

Not all Jamaicans are African people because as the motto says "out of many one people" so you'll have people being born in Jamaica therefore being Jamaican but can originate from China, India, etc.
Was just about to say this!!

Simple
Let people be proud to be where they from and their culture.
So I think some Africans are jealous that you guys are viewed in a more positive light, so they want you to identify with Africa to remind you that "No you are still African, don't go thinking you are different from us and better because the colonizer said so." Some people have a very warped perception of black folks in the U.S. Some are aware- but may feel as though their “home country” was colonized- yet they know where they are from. But they forget-the U.S was once a part of Britain:13 colonies- and slavery occurred there as well( and all over the world). No one vilifies Australians for not identifying as British or white South Africans for not identifying as Dutch, but when a black Jamaican, who grow up in Jamaican culture, and knows nothing else but that, says they’re Jamaican and proud, people wanna say “remember where you came from?” Like our European surnames don’t remind us of how we came to be?
Right!
Right and the history for us is DIFFERENT we were literally forced to forget our African ancestry. It was erased and stolen from us.
