This is an archetypal American song. However as with all great music it can transcend time and space. Several years ago I left Scotland to do some travelling in America. Travelling on the train from Louisiana through Texas I ended up in El Paso in a bar called Sassy's on East Missouri St. I met a couple of chaps (one from Houston, and one from New York) and we got chatting, and to cut a long story short we all got very, very drunk on Tequila and beer with me doing impressions of Mr Scott from Star Trek (ah cannae git anymere oot of her Captain). The link to the song was there were some other chaps in the bar who were Vietnam Vets and one of them put this song on and we all sang along, well sort of.😅😅😅 One of those nights that burn themselves into your memory. That was nearly twenty five years ago. But I am happy to say that there survives a memento of that night. To this day in Scotland a very threadbare washed out T shirt from Sassy's bar in El Paso, Texas survives, but seldom gets worn for fear of it falling apart.
@@susieq8924 You are so right about the T shirt. Through the drunken haze at the end of that night as we all said our goodbyes somebody said let us exchange addresses and keep in touch. A noble sentiment. I recall, vaguely, saying it would never happen. So I think the chap from New York hit on the idea of us all buying a T shirt as a memento. I am happy to say it worked.
True! I'm glad I have a couple of radio stations that play the 70sand80s.the kids at work can't understand why I don't get out of the front end loader at lunch, I just set in it and eat lunch and listen to the great music. If I had a time machine, I'd go back to the 60's and 70's and go to every concert of all the great bands of the time and then (at the age of 70) have some kick ass memories. Hearing the songs is great, but to have been at the concerts too, nothing would beat that.
One of the best songs to get your compass straight…..was lucky enough to see the Band live a few times back in the good times..of rock and words that matter came together…
I remember being at the swimming pool in Ohio at the apts in 69 all summer long with this and a whole lot of Mowtown that I grew up on.....I was 13 yrs old by then...lol

I remember on holiday on the east coast of the UK when one of the pirate radio stations played this song. Loved it ever since 👍😊. Thanks guys, happy fond memories, and much better times for sure...
I remember the first time I heard this song. Must have been about 1977 or so and I was about 16. It was a summer morning and my mom had the radio on and this song came on. I loved it from the first time I heard it. Life was so carefree back then, I wish I could go back for a visit. I’d take my kids with me so they’d understand why their parents always reminisce so dreamily about the 70s.
Saw the Band at an all day concert at Midway stadium. Must have been 1972, don’t remember the other bands. But this song was special. Thanks for the memories. St.Paul,Minnesota.
Heard this song for the first time in 1968 on WBUS an underground radio station in Miami. It got famous in Easy Rider. Played that album for years and lost it in my first divorce. Man I miss that album :).
Back in the late 70s get off work at midnight go up into the hills with the crew cooler full of beer some fat ones rolled listening to this on the cassette player and watch the sun come up. That was livin Jack!!🎶🍻 🌄

I love this song. Nazareth is referring to Nazareth Pennsylvania where Martin Guitar is made. I live nearby. I’m so proud to have that small town where I went to school mentioned in this beautiful song 🎶. Heard this song before, but never knew the lyrics until recently. Rest in peace Robbie and the rest of the band that have died.
Well it's now officially a piece of Americana about a small southern town. It's kinda weird it was written by a Canadian perhaps, but otherwise, I and a lot of others keep listening to it as though it's still a top 40 or whatever.
Actually I believe it was Nazareth Pa. Way up above the Macy Dixie line. One of the band members had relatives there. Levon Helm was the only southerner.
I've two things to day about The Weight. I've performed this song quite a few time, always outside the USofA and it resonates with every audience. Deeply. Second, I've never, in my mind, envisioned pulling into Nazareth in an Oldsmobile. Or any automobile. More like pulling in on foot, or getting off a wagon. Not to criticize. I'm now reconsidering how I interpret the song. So maybe I do pull in to Nazareth in my old Chevy II.

Back at a time when the lyrics, were sung in a way that they could be understood.
It's a pity there not bands around today that write great music like this 👍👍👍👍😎
Well that's great that there aren't bands singing crap like this.
