These are great tips. I helped a buddy replace the frame on his Jeep a few years back because either the dealer he bought it from or the previous owner had covered up the rusty frame with aluminum tape and spray painted it black. At a glance it looked like the frame was in great shape and all of the temporary warranties expired long before he noticed anything wrong with it. By the time we replaced the frame the engine and transmission was the only thing holding it together. After we got all of the parts off of it the owner literally folded the old frame in half with one hand. Had he seen this video before he went to buy it maybe he would have been able to spot the issue before he bought the vehicle.
Here is a tip I use at work to check for previous water in fuel damage on a diesel. Go to the return side of the fuel system and pull a Banjo bolt, and check for rust. Since its return you don't have to prime it to start it back up, and if there is rust on the bolt you can be sure there is rust in the pump and injectors. When owners say" I have never had water in my fuel" that's not possible. All diesel's have tanks that are vented to atmosphere so hot fuel in the return coming back to the cold tank Bamm condensation. So what your really checking for is if they have kept up with there water separator maintenance. I love these types of maintenance videos. Keep it up!
***EX MINING VEHICLES: 1: check for plain white steel wheels. 2: In Utes, such as a Landcruiser, look for a heavy duty steel tray or a steel tray with white sides but black underneath, 3: check if the chassis has been resprayed. ***
Mobile phones are handy for videoing exhaust smoke if you are by yourself. It is a way I check my trailer brake lights by myself. Once again another great informative video.
Check everything in the car, all the toys. Push, pull, or poke every lever switch and button. That way you not only find out if they work, but what they do as well. And be extra sure to check the seat adjustment works properly.
Had a mate buy a Nav just last week. "then got me to look at it" this guy. The car looked way to clean for 168xxxkms engine bay was polished and had some residual feel to it. Also definitely looked like everything was spray painted i.e chassis. The give away was the shocks had black paint on parts of it. I found it hard to give him abit of history about it only physically looking at it other than it looks professionally cleaned out. Should add how to look for problems within a detailed clean up.
Great video Ronny, long one but it didn’t felt like a 40minute video. All advice you’ve given with the help of this friend is invaluable. No one wants to buy a 4x4 vehicle omitting these important key points, and then it goes bad and then have issues with the wife.
You probably dont give a damn but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost the login password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Elijah Santiago i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
You should take the vehicle for a drive and make sure everything is up to temp before checking for leaks. Most of the time the leaks will be more prominent when the fluids are hot and the viscosity thins out.
Great video Ronny. Another good tip is to open the oil filler cap whilst the engine is on a see how much air is getting pushed out. A little bit is normal, but if its a lot it means worn engine.
I am looking for my fist 4wd Ute now. Want to get one before the end of July 2024 been watching all 3 of these videos you done for the last 2 months making sure I research properly. I was wondering if you could do an updated verson on this series I know it will take a while but it would be be great for future use. Thank you and have a real time travelling Aus I am always looking forward to seeing your work 💯💯💯💯
Great tip on reaching into the air cleaner outlet to engine....i always freak my mates out how much red dust bypasses the standard (non wet) paper air cleaners... Landrovers run a oilled paper air filter and the inlet looked as good as the day it was molded even after 200000km!!
Paying top dollars for a vehicle, then spend a few hundred and get RAC... to do a full inspection. These guys will find everything almost. U will know what needs doing on it if u decide to buy then.
A video explaining the different types of 4WD systems used by manufacturers would be awesome. I have a 1996 Montero/Pajero/Shogun with Mitsubishi's 'super select 2' system and I notice it can be quite finicky, and have understood that it is not the most reliable system. How does Toyota's 4WD system differ? I'm looking into selling my Mitsu and getting a first generation 4Runner/Hilux Surf, and can't seem to find a lot of this information online.
The 70's -90's had uneven gaps between alot the panels from the factory . Seeing this doesn't instantly prove a collision unless the gap is 1/2 an inch or more and differing colors of paint or signs of bad prep work under the paint are present .
hey Ronny, great information. I'm a tech in the US and just a tip about checking to see if a clutch is slipping without beating on the car. if you car driving at a slow speed say 20mph, put the car/truck into a high gear (5th or 6th If it has it) and give it a lot of throttle. if the clutch is going to slip, it will probably do it under those conditions. be mindful however on a turbocharged vehicle as this isn't great for the turbo, however doing it once or twice to check clutch condition isn't going to kill it.
hey ronny saw you today pulling out of an estate of wanneroo rd trucks looking good mate your vids are awsome keep up the good work i went past in a silver prado 150
Forgot to check if the oil feels gritty between fingers if the oil is cold as have seen sand to shut up big end knocking ,also if warm when you get there wonder why as may have problems starting when cold.
i got a discovery2 td5 as replacement via insurance for a car crash it was presented well zero issues that could be located till 3 days later it seemed to eat the coolant now 7grand later its coming home was a engine oil cooler inside the engine that had failed yet how do you find that when its got new coolant in it ??????? buyer be were not just old land rovers many 4x4 have hidden issues that only present once you drive them
I have been inspecting Pajero Sport 2018+ for purchase. I am surprised there is some underbody rust on every single vehicle. Exhaust pipe, tow point, sub frame , etc I have seen 6 already. Is this normal or is it just Mitsubishi? I have never owned or inspected a 4x4 SUV before this so may be just my ignorance. Thanks!
Hi Ronny, would you help to ask Chris whether he is interested in providing his service to inspect and test potential 4WD vehicles for customers in WA before they buy? And if possible, provide some kind of evaluation report. Such report can be verbal which customers can record when Chris provides his findings to them. Thanks.
Hey mate, have a look at my channel! it'll show you the capabilities of it even though it's not intended for it I got a '13 SJ Forester, 2.5L petrol I've done many tracks here and there and went camping with it. No problems with it whatsoever but it's not a proper 4WD, so don't expect to do Cape York or outback travelling...but if you're going for a few days in a somewhat do-able track, you'll have no problems! feel free to ask any more questions!
Is the suggestion that you take a vehicle into the shop for all this BEFORE you buy? OR after? If before how do you do that? I suppose some of it you can do on the lot.
+C. Powers do what you can first and if the vehicle passes your test and inspection then consider taking it to the next level being a pro mechanical inspection if that makes sense
*gets a drift cruiser (underground transport car) has coal dust everywhere has a warter filter thingy for the exhaust* hmmm maby it was used for mining XD
Just finished watching this video, really appreciate all these great great great tips! Love your videos and thanks so much for making it extra detailed, wrote a whole page on what to check when looking at my next 4WD does anyone know what I got to look for a 2nd hand car in terms of timing belts and belts?
Ronny, Great video, I cant help but notice that you forgot to test the windscreen (shield) on pitting. It is a safety issue, as a rule of thumb you should replace your windscreen every 80.000 Km or even faster if you drive most of your time in a dusty environment (see 40:20 on your video timeline), the light gets scattered to the point that it becomes a real safety hazard. The driver not being able to have a full unobstructed view out the car is a much more serious issue. Nor the crack or the bull’s eye really poses a safety problem. Love you video's.
You've earned a 👍, but please make more close-ups. Especially worty for not native (aussi dialect) speakers 😄😄 Greetz from Ger 😂😂 And I wondered what Ex-Miner ment.. ain't got that problem over here 😉
For me the best way to work out a car is dodgy is look at the body language of the person selling the car. You can tell if a car is dodgy just by the way they act
im curious about the red dust, why is it so bad? i had a gq from a 1 owner and it had red dust but absolutly no rust. full service history and every recipt kept from when he purchased it new
stevojan the red bull dust is very fine and very abrasive. It's not as much about rust and more about the fact it gets into everything and wears it out. I was recently on a property in central Queensland and the cow cockey was laughing about how he was buying a new 70 series for the farm and he was going to get the old one detailed and then sell it off in the city where some unlucky chump would think he was getting a bargain.
generally the red dust "pindan" is just a pain as it gets in every where an way and layers up over time.... however if it gets into the engine through a buggered filter, it is highly abrasive... some say it was part of the oil consumption issues on early LC 200s as they had an ill fitting airbox lid allowing unfiltered air/dust in!!
if it stays in the out back with minimal salt no drama...however if left on the chassis etc then used regularly on the beach without washing...yes thats gonna be nasty!
+Timus you'd have to get under it in the car park. We shot in a work shop so we could film it easier and show what needs to be looked at. If something looks like it needs to be inspected closely and you are keen to buy the vehicle then take it to a work shop and get them to hoist it and look at it.
these suggestions are not possible in real. they are too many and if dealer it is not possible to do many of the tests. plus with this sensitivity never can buy an old car.

Thanks for info, here in the States we love this stuff.
John Diaz I second that from Maryland, USA! Love his content lol

What a top bloke Chris is

Just turn your lights on in the car

Best note when looking under a 4wd, look for any very clean shiny patches

Your doing a great service Ronny! Good on ya mate! Regardless of what we know there's always something to learn and remind us.

@Elijah Santiago It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you really help me out !
@Vivaan Ezequiel glad I could help =)
I am new to overlanding and these videos have been extremely useful! Thanks for doing us all a great service Ronny
Thanks for this video I'm still a couple of years off buying a ute but definitely rewatch this video serie
A couple suggestions: Always inspect / buy a vehicle in the day or look over in a shop. Pull interior panels looking for bondo dust.
You should take the vehicle for a drive and make sure everything is up to temp before checking for leaks. Most of the time the leaks will be more prominent when the fluids are hot and the viscosity thins out.

I went for a trip through the cursed red sand.... you know.... about 3 years ago.... I'm still finding it In the car!! so much for anti-dust seals!
Ronny, well done with the channel, this is some truly great content!
Great video Ronny. Another good tip is to open the oil filler cap whilst the engine is on a see how much air is getting pushed out. A little bit is normal, but if its a lot it means worn engine.
Thank you Ronny
Congrats on 100k subscribers!!!
Phenomenal video!! Chris is a real pro’ & someone you want in your neighbourhood to maintain your vehicle. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Ronny, would really like to see an episode of modified on a Subaru Forester.
YES PLEASE! I am a Subaru Owner here, got a Forester and have proved so many people wrong about what it can do as an AWD vehicle
Is your forester any good mate? I'm thinking of getting one for off use and camping as it's in my price bracket.

Hey was wondering if you would ever head down to the eyre peninsula way Mabey do a fan meet and beach drive?
so what are you buying, something new,or,25 yrs old.?.
what did he say at 31:02??
Anybody know what type of truck he owns that we can see in the background?
Which one?
Mate, is it considered normal to bring a car you are about to buy to a shop? How do you inspect a vehicle thoroughly? Thanks
