  • On the 22nd June 2024, at 1:15pm in London, Carla Jardim took to the stage of the IALD Enlighten Europe Conference and presented a very personal and heartfelt story about light and dark skin tones throughout history and how they have been interpreted in different times and fields, including:
How other fields of lighting, such as photography, cinematography, and stage lighting, have successfully addressed the issue with creative solutions.
How architectural lighting could serve as a way for equity, knowing that artificial lighting is not the same for all, where diversity is not considered or represented.
Participants had the opportunity to think about inclusive projects that don't consider universal solutions or recipes, making us wonder if there is a right way to illuminate spaces. Is there room for architectural lighting design to embrace equity?
This presentation describes how lighting design deals with dark skin tones, questions the lack of diversity and inclusion in the strategies and delivers creative solutions that consider other types away from the structural and conventional, overcoming the difficulties during the process.
Even though the room was full, we wanted to give this presentation the widest reach we could achieve so we asked Carla to record a version for Women In Lighting and she graciously agreed. Enjoy!
