    Bless you Vince. I love what you do and who you are. I can relate to your comment about your earliest memories of being in woodland. I was privileged to have a wonderful Grandfather who would march me for miles and miles through forests, thickets, spinneys and disused lanes. We would collect fallen branches, sticks and deadwood. It was the best part of my life. He would leave me at the top of the garden by the wood shed to chop kindling and saw up logs most afternoons as a child. I still have all of my fingers and thumbs. Quite a miracle. He either taught me well or i was a very lucky child. I still remember his words today. 'use the whole blade and hide your thumb'. Thanks for your videos. They make me feel happy. Please keep on making them. All the best. Matt

      Hi Matt, Your Grandfather sounds wonderful. As a boy it was only my mother who really took an interest in my dawn woodland wanderings. And the thumbs advice - spot on! I have worked with two men who have lost a thumb, both from cutting firewood logs on a McConnel swing saw bench. What did your Grandfather do - how did he know all this? I have one more gold prospecting trip and then I will try to get on with a bit of wood fire filming again. Have a good winter. Al best. Vince

    i dont know if you remember Jack Hargrives,... your videos take me right back to his "Out of Town" tv programme. beautiful. Although i dont think i ever witnessed Jack Hargrives getting into a hammock!! many thanks.

      I loved watching Jack Hargreaves as a boy - and still watch him on RUclips. He was an exceptional countryman and so very knowledgeable. Also he was 'real' somehow - so many countryside presenters on tv are not now, they just seem to present the countryside as a sugar-coated theme park. Jack would have scoffed at my hammock! Vince

    Lovely, honest video. Found this channel after reading the Wood Fire Handbook.,
    That book made me convinced I wasn’t silly to be so excited by logs and firewood I happen by and put into a rucksack to dry in my shed! The tone of the videos here mirror the tone of the book; they’re relaxed, enthusiastic about the outdoors and it’s great that this one celebrates the pine cone! I’ve only started getting serious about collecting my own wood fuel over last couple of years. Love your enthusiasm for beech sticks. I could not have a stove going without them. Many aimless walks have yielded plenty of
    kindling. Have used pine cones before, as a dopey youth, but tended to fire them in a half dozen at a time to keep the fire ablaze. Know better now. Cone firestarter with a few strips of birch looks a lovely way to start up and use them sensibly without risking a chimney fire! Smoke scent must be excellent too. Hope to see you make some more video Vincent. All the best to you.

      Hi Daniel, thank you - and I think very many people are drawn to wood fires, the light and comfort of them - it's in our DNA! We have had, and benefitted from, wood fires since long before we were actually human: it's like some sort of folk memory. Have a good winter. Vince

    Such a lovely natural video. I could feel the sun and warmth. Like you i am at home woodland. My hammock is one of my 'best buys' . Collecting pine cones is fun and also around conifers there are often Goldcrests, so another great little bonus. Thankyou for such a delightful walk.

      I do usually take binoculars or a monocular out with me, but the cones day was a lazy hot one - enjoy your hammock!

    Such a lovely share...making every moment with nature count. Going to invest in a hammock, for sure...and fall in love with some treetops. Thank you for the transport into your ‘dark and deep’. Really enjoy your videos and temps are reminding me to re-visit your book again.

      When you've got your hammock, the two knots I use most are the Alpine Butterfly and a Farrimond Friction Hitch. That's partly because I keep my rope as one length, so need a loop on the bight. The Bowline is also great . . . . sorry I've turned a bit knot nerdy!

      Wow! Did you just segway into your next book? I got what my grandson calls a “goosebump yes”! Thanks for the suggestions! I definitely will be waiting for it’s release...

    You are lucky that your government allows you to just go out and collect cones and fallen wood. Here where I live though 42% of country is covered with forest it's against the law to just take it. The idea is that it always belongs to someone and it's their property and you need their permission. Even if it's state... Forests are still shrinking year to year and I doubt it's people fault, it's the foreign companies that are clearly cheating the quotas and nobody doing anything about that. I love your videos and calming voice by the way, they bring peace to this rotten world.

      Hi Josh, yes there is so much wrong, and yet it is still a very good time for most of us to be alive. I only gather a limited amount of cones and sticks or maybe someone would stop me - although I don't think most foresters would bother - maybe some real pedant would! All best, and thanks for your comment, Vince

    Are there many beetles and insects in them do you keep them outside or indoors

    • @WoodFiresWithVince
      @WoodFiresWithVince  Год назад

      I have noticed very few insects in the cones, but I do leave them outside for a while before using them.
