  • Another abandoned house I explored in the summer of 2012. The people who abandoned this house didn't leave anything behind to give any clues as to how long it was abandoned. Unfortunately, while exploring, I noticed it has fallen victim to some vandalism and copper thieves.

All these old abandoned houses make me sad I live in a house over 100 years old and most of them are beautiful a shame to see them a waste

I would have loved to save those cabinets and some of those chairs too... I know it's a bad thing to take from abandoned houses but I only did that with the brick house, I just couldn't let those books go to waste... I saved a few cabinets too.. found uses for pretty much everything I saved. Most importantly, there wasn't much left, the family came and cleaned it out after the woman died... It was pretty much the only time I actually put a LOT of effort into learning the history, I learned from a few locals and someone who knew the lady that lived there... What I learned was, she was from California, her and her husband were both doctors, and from what I understood.. they were probably the third owners of the house.. the house was built in the 1840's as a log cabin and by 1860 it was converted to the brick mansion and until the late 90's it was lived in but it's hard to say because it was all ready starting to fall into ruin.. the windows were breaking not by vandals but from the shifting of the building.. there was no wiring on the first floor.. the majority of it was the tubing.. forgot what it was called.. but it was confined to the upstairs apparently, the first floor had extension cords running from the second floor.. it had a HUGE stove in the kitchen.. 3 shelves built in on the left side and 4 large burners... not sure if it was gas or what.. but it was beautiful... I managed to take photos of it the last time I was in there... but in 2017... in 2018, I didn't stay inside long because it was even worse condition... someone cut out the second floor window and went in but the floor was sinking down further.. I was inside for like 2 minutes and my heart was racing and I felt nervous.. when I did it in 2017, I didn't get that feeling until I climbed the stairs to the second floor and could see the outside through cracks in the walls... but the bathroom had one of those vintage sinks.. wide basin on top and narrow footing (Whatever you called it) it was pretty cute.. had 2 shutters in the bathtub.. I think it had like 4 bedrooms on the second floor, two living rooms.. 3 fire places.. one on the left side and 2 on the right side.. someone got smart and stuffed a tree log into the right side holding the floor up but the left side the floor sunk down in the middle but the cement or stone supports underneath held up parts of the floor... I don't know how much water was in the basement but it was enough to cover up some of the trash thrown down there... before the main staircase was gone, there was the steps leading into the basement, they were gone and likely covered by boxes that people took from upstairs and tossed down in.. along with lots of records and any furniture they could push into the basement... People have thanked me for taking photos of the place and many people say I'm doing good by preserving history... but I'm just a novice photographer.. I am on DeviantArt where I post my photos.. since I'm confined to Vermont, I get mostly photos in Southern Vermont and where ever I go with someone... Sometimes going to New Hampshire.. My DeviantART name is TheGreatWiseAss and my photos are usually under the name Another Beautiful Day in Vermont... there's a ton of them.. well over 10,000 now... probably closer to 13,000 or 14,000 photos... lost count

Just echoing an earlier suggestion: you can get dates from more than calendars. I know they may not be the most accurate when it comes to date last inhabited, but any years on the electronics and food containers can at least give a general idea. Judging by the fairly modern compact printer, I estimate this property was abandoned sometime in the 2000s. With the apparent VCR, late 90s at the earliest. P.S., vandals make me livid and sad. :( How would THEY like it if someone went in their house and tore their stuff up?!

House-found. Families-lost. ~Makes one think about what we'll leave behind when we're gone. An old broken chair tells no tales. Someone served up meals from that kitchen. :)

I'm just wondering if that small room on the second floor was intended to be a nursery. It looked like it was just big enough for a crib and a changing table. Also, the cinderblocks and the holes right behind them suggest that someone tried to put in a wood burning stove. The path of the holes appear to lead to the chimney.

I'm curious...as of January 2015, is this house still standing? I've been thinking about buying a piece of property and building a house rather than buying an existing house and I love the floor plan of this one. I would definitely add another room and bathroom up top but the floor plan is beautiful. As for the "odd" room upstairs, I'm kinda of old lol and I've known people who've lived in houses with little rooms like this and they always kept large bureau's in there for the bedding, sheets, pillows, spreads and other things you need. They didn't have washers and dryers for the most part so they kept a lot of bedding, especially in places where it got so cold at night - extra blankets. Also storing things you dont need as often but would be too incovenient to put in the attic such as a step stool to get into the top of the closets. They would put a tension rod across the door with a curtain on it to hide their stuff :) I would close it off and make it the closet for the master bedroom and turn that huge walk-in closet as the bathroom. But I'd like to know if it is still standing...

This was one of the best "house" videos of yours. I love this house's floor plan. It seems that back in the 1940's on up to about the early 1960's, they made closets and rooms quite spacious, on the most part. Another brilliant narration and filming! Thank you for your continue patronage in the video posting format! :-)

I must agree with your conclusion: This would be a nice house if it were fixed up, and I think it is certainly possible to do it. Too bad it was vandalized; it seems in pretty good shape, all things considered. I like your narration; it sounds very natural. You hold the camera pretty steady, too. Thanks for the explore!

Also sadly, some idiot ripped off all those tiles on the ceiling upstairs. That could not have happened itself and the good condition of the underlying frame shows this. One can see a piece stuck under a nail which leads me to believe they were all torn off maliciously.

Good morning, Pam! A neat house with an, um, interesting floor plan. I agree with others about the cinder blocks probably supporting a wood stove. And I wonder if that long, slim cabinet on the left in the kitchen once supported a fold-down ironing board? This house seems to be one of the nicest places in terms of imagining fixing it up and living in it. What a variety of locations you've explored! Thanks again.

    • @TikiTrex

Yes, especially in the farms as there is no natural gas out there. Their furnaces are oil-fired and have tanks to hold heating oil.

I think the brick was to set the wood stove on in the front room. Also at 5:15 the wall used to hold an ironing board it would fold up in the wall and had a place for the iron. We had this in our kitchen in the 50's.. I was hoping to see Kevin Cosner in the corn when you first showed up.Love the oak floors.

Tiki, when you were in the kitchen and opening the cupboards, did you have to press a small button at the top of the handle? if so, those are "ship's cupboards" all the rage in the 40's which would probably mean the kitchen was redone then, 'cause the house looks older than that.

The house looks like it was built in the 1920s. The closet's and the door in the basement. I noticed no laundry area and wonder if they first room in the basement was
used for the wasjer & dryer. The staircase was curved and narrow. Reminds me of a house I lived in as a teenager but in town.
