    Robert reference the plover hackle colour. In the book Pritt says breast feather of the golden plover in summer plumage, if you look at a golden plover in its summer plumage they have a black beast which would explain the black coloured hackle in the drawing.

    Just tried this with a feather from a teal duck wing - a nice light grey, so hopefully not too far off
