This is years old, but don't think it has red threshold on. Focusing is never going to be easy on this lens, doesn't matter what you do, that's part of the fun. If you can shoot with this, you can shoot with anything.
is there a issue using the viewfinder? Also is the focus peaking, with the digital zoom, Not working, or maybe not available on your camera? Would make things more simple and I think the out of focus is due to the screen resolution in live view.
Wolfox360 - Thanks for watching and also for thinking outside the box. 1.No issue with viewfinder, you can use it, but it's not exactly the best way with this lens and on doing videos the viewer wouldn't see anything. Liveview all the way with these lenses and whatever anyone tells you, when not zoomed that is the image that will be in the final outcome. A better way is to use the right top button on the Canon to give 10x zoom of the image, but since I know it doesn't apply to a lot of cameras, didn't use it in the vid.A caveat of that is when DSLR's don't have a liveview and I do have a camera that doesn't. Then of course viewfinder will be used. The problem a lot have had with this lens is that the don't understand the push - pull method of focussing and that's one of the main points in the video I was trying to convey. 2. "Would make things more simple" As above liveview is the more accurate way. However I mostly shoot in viewfinder and again I use a Sony A100 which is the first DSLR Sony brought out and doesn't have liveview. With using a viewfinder, like anything with the lens, you have to have it supported on a tripod, but it does my neck in, so again liveview is better, if the camera has it. Thanks for the questions though.
Hi NightShooter. I've seen both of your videos on this lens and some of the photos you have taken. It looks like there's a bit of a nak to using it, but I like how the depth of field is dramatically reduced using this lens. On my Nikon D3200, the supplied lens (18-55mm) allows you to preview focus through the viewfinder. Would it be the same case with this lens? (I struggle to make accurate judgement using the LCD outdoors.)
Yes David similar principles. It can be difficult at times to use the screen when your used to using the eye piece thing. I don't know if you're aware you can magnify on the screen though so you can see a more accurate way of how things will turn out. I plan on making more vids with this and similar lens.
If you don't have a tripod get one ;-) You can get decent one's for under 20 quid from Amazon. It's an essential bit of kit, or at least it is for me as I take night shots.
yeah it's on the too buy list. I was at an air show recently and my 200mm wasn't quite enough for my liking. The opteka was on amazon for £90 so napped it up.
I got this tripod, had it ages and still good www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0000WXD16/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1I've got a 70 or 75-300mm for the Canon I got it 2nd hand and I've never rated it really, the images are soft with that as well, even though it can used in Auto focus.
Right we got to get you to use this thing and I don't want to be beaten. I've just rewatched the video and my advice would be the same now, as it was when I did it 8 yrs ago. The trinity of this lens is: 1 - Tripod and tightening it. Use the middle of the lens on the tripod, NOT the camera. 2 - Use the barrel to focus and start at 420mm at first. 3 - Use the timer function on your camera eg 2secs, or try 5 secs. If you still have problems get back to me, but you can and will be able to do it, it's not an easy lens to use, but I know you can 😀
Hey .
i got one and trying to use it with my Canon M50 EOS but it is not letting me take photos.
you seem to have issues with focusing, did you try the red threshold mode? is that something canon has?

thanks, helped me to decide for buying one :D
Have fun with it ;)
Thanks... I just bought pretty much the same lens for a Canon 650D and just cannot focus
Once you get the hang of it you'll be fine. All these telephoto lenses are the same.

NightShooter thanks, I appreciate the advice!
Love you from india
Always use shutter delay when you shoot long telephoto....avoid camera shake
What are the details like at 800mm?
Images are soft but usable after some practice.
Yeah i just got it today, I don't have a tripod so anything other than 420 is hard to get a shot off.

this looks more like a review than a tutorial. i still cant get this exact lens to focus.
