I did not know about that, and it's really nice! Not only does it help you find it, but the button in the search window allows you to use the tool right there; you don't have to go find it to use it. So you can just search, use it, and move on without finding it in the toolbar.
Aww yeah! completely agree! It even remembers your previous few searches, so it could act as a temporary repository for commands you are using on the current project. Good stuff!
I use it all the time, it gets even more useful as you add more custom features to your toolbars (where is no way to see them all at once even on a big screen). Sometimes it takes a couple tries to get the right keyword but it updates as you type so usually pretty quick!
Depending on what you were wanting to do, you wouldn't have needed to create a plane in the first place. Right-clicking on a face lets you create a sketch on it as well as giving you the option to create an offset plane.
I often use the keyboard shortcut (alt+C) to access the search box. I find this method much quicker than searching for an icon on the menu bar. To make a plane, for example, I just press alt+C, start typing "pl" and hit enter. Onshape's keyboard shortcuts can be a little weird, but once memorized they are very quick to use.
I use this a lot, and it’s also helpful that you can search by related keywords, if you don’t remember the exact name of the command. I think OnShape indexes the commands by help topic so the search pulls them up by those sort of aliases or related keywords. I think “surface” or “rotate” are ones I use a lot which are not exact command names.

It is often better to use a mate connector as sketch plane.
Yeah I really need to start learning how to leverage MATE CONNECTORS - coming soon!

Yeah I really like being able to just quickly search - as you said even though the icon might be there on your toolbar, its sometimes hard to find!

Oh that's good to know too! For offset planes that will be very helpful! Thanks Glen!

Ohhh - that's a great one! Thanks Zach! I'm gonna start using that too!! Awesome!!!!!

yeah its so nice to be able to just "get close" and let onshape guide you to the desired command!
I have known this feature but I often don't know the word for searching for 🙂
Yeah that's what I was glad to see that Onshape uses indexing with similar words, in case you dont know the exact name of the command 🙂
