Did that force tie it to retail because they didn't think it would be something people would buy on it's own? Or because they wanted to use the people playing it as a means of boosting retails active player count for the quarterly report?

I find it fun to play finally something for pvp player :) Love it !
It requires retail to be installed, but not dragonflight. Otherwise it has nothing to do with retail or classic. Though it uses retail models. It's basically a standalone Fortnite knock off that requires you to waste HDD space on a game you will never play if you wanted to try it... Assuming you don't already have retail "wow" installed.

I am sorry Ziqo I love ya bro but this looks like utter arse, it's a very bad sign for wow as a whole when they are releasing a dodgy as hell BR 8yrs late. SOD was a massive disappointment, classic is old and outdated with too much of a grind for players like me that want to enjoy the classic gameplay without the grind just for pvp and retail is just to full on and because I left it for SOD I can't get back into it. If they would release a strictly PVP version of wow where gear doesn't matter and it is solely based on skill not what build you play or how much time you can grind I would return, Cata is my last hope at ever playing wow again because they screwed the game with retail it's the same crap since DF where they make a super hero and instead of slowly nerfing the op build down and slowly buffing the trash build up and finding happy ground they do these stupid overhauls and destroy the game? SOD is make a super hero and we have to deal with it for a whole Phase that is also just a massive time gate. I want so bad for this game to be good but it just seems like it is never going to happen, I had no choice but to cancel my sub and delete the game entirely. Maybe Cata will be what I am looking for but I doubt it, I will wait and watch and if I think it is worth paying blizzard a cent to play it I may but it is really not looking good. I want to play with the slower gameplay of classic but the ease of life changes but the classic community will do anything to try and stop that because most of them don't have to pay bills and work their arses off. Sad time to be a wow gamer honestly. I will always watch your vids because I do trust your judgement unlike sellouts like Xaryu, he makes me hate the game even more
