I have met a lot of music/vinyl enthusiasts over the course of many years. It is my opinion that any one of them would be overjoyed to find an album, that had a card with a bio of the previous owner. What you’re doing with the Coleman collection is more than admirable kind sir. ✌🏼

Norman, I am 75 years old and been a buyer and lover of music since the 50s. For many years I only bought CDs and then screamed music. Since I discovered your channel I have a new appreciation for my modest collection and my musical journey. You have lead me to new music like The Nightbeats or treasures like Dusty Springfield. Being isolated because of covid(very strict in Ontario), and health issues, I so enjoy your postings. I feel a connection that is not in my life anymore. Keep doing your wonderful thing. Joe loves you ❤.

Collecting is highly idiosyncratic and yet we have a commonality, even across interests/hobbies. I have too much when a collection begins to remind me of my mortality in ways that make the pursuit seem futile, compulsive, or overwhelming. When I'm doing it right, it's a joy... some kind of nostalgic/hopeful fulfillment of an impulse I had even as a child. Curating a collection brings me a lot of satisfaction and peace.

I recently lost my uncle and inherited his massive music collection. We both went digital back in the 80s and never went back to vinyl. I don't have anything against vinyl. I just transitioned over to the new medium. Over a few months, I absorbed his collection into mine. I told my wife, I will not need to purchase any music for years. Unfortunately for her, that statement didn't last long and I am back on the hunt. My uncle and I were very close, he was just 7 years older than myself and started me on my love of music. He took me to my first concert and was a huge influence by introducing me to new bands and artists. Our recent conversations were mainly about music. We were always on the look out for new releases, remasters, new box sets, etc. Now it's all gone. I have a whole in my life and I think we are experiencing the same feelings with the loss of your friend. I truly enjoy your channel and wish you the best. Peace.

This is probably one of your best videos The current status of your collection is about the fantastic memories you have from each album you pull from your self. It is also about your strong friendships you have developed in your lifetime. We are at the stage of our lives that we look back and become nostalgic. And we smile.

So interesting to hear your thoughts about record collecting and friendships. In response to the question, when do you have enough records, or when does the collection end? I don't think it ever does. I remember, back in the late 70s or so, I was out shopping with my Dad. I arrived back at the car with a new LP under my arm. Dad asked, "What do you need another record for? You've got loads already." I told him, "Yes, but I didn't have THIS one." All these years later, I still think like that. There's still always one more to get. I was going to say record collecting is like an addiction. Well maybe it is. But it's so much more than that. It's a never-ending journey, a wild adventure, and - as you know - there's much joy and inspiration to be found along the way. Anyway, great video, Mazzy. We love YOU!

Reconfiguring albums and finding space for new purchases it’s an endless task for regular record collectors but let’s admit that we love it. I might read an article that gets me thinking I have to play that record now. It’s a bummer when I realise I swapped or sold a particular album and it’s not available for me to play. Incidentally I have the same friends for the last 45 - 50 years and none of them give a toss about records. And the DC5 are fuckin’ great. Ace video Mazzy. Such passion.

I am retired and look forward to your videos with great enthusiasm. It’s because of your personality and what you bring to your videos that I keep watching. I now listen to vinyl, cd's equally and do not stream anything. Please keep doing what you are doing, forget the haters. Wear hats in the house, keep talking in third person, keep talking about all your collections, keep doing sales, keep talking about your life experiences especially your personal ones and more importantly keep dancing through your rooms and down the hallway to the "Love Theme". Maybe that you should make that your channel song. Canjo loves you....

You could simply enjoy your own record collection all to yourself but because of your channel so many more get to enjoy it like myself. It has become a community collection that you procure. Im very grateful. Fyi, my OCD states that your black gold record on the wall on the bottom right is crooked. Lol. Also, my dad is the biggest Jackie Wilson fan and befriended him in Las Vegas in the late 1960s. I've seen pictures of them together and he has a significant album collection of his. Im curious if you have any? I saw that Coleman had one.

Thanks for sharing, Mazzy. I hadn't thought too deeply about why I collect records other than it being a way to connect me to this art that I love. After watching your video, it made me reflect on that question. Why do I have so many records? There are so many reasons. Yes, as I play records, I experience the effect of the music, but it also is a visceral recollection of the past; sort of like an audible scrapbook. There's also the feeling of being part of a community, sharing the same experience with others who also love this art and this medium. You now have a special way to reconnect with your friend, Coleman; through his records. How awesome is that? Cheers, Mazzy. - Chris

Let me jump in so you know. I sold the bulk majority of my LPs a few years ago. I didn't have a collection like yours. I had maybe 600. (I switched to CDs eventually, so the LPs generally ended by 1990.) One of my great joys was watching an older gentleman come over -- by older gentleman he was older than me and I was 66 at the time -- and he had sold off his vinyl at some point in the past and was trying to recover it. I gave him very good prices and I didn't make a lot of money, but I was happy to make someone else happy and if I could have charged him an extra $500 who gives a fuck, I don't need the money, and what kind of person would that have made me? He ended up buying about 90 LPs, mostly classic 60s-70s rock, generally in good condition. Another guy came by and bought most of my jazz as well as more of the rock. There went another 200 albums. What's left here? My original Beatles album, some MFSL albums, some strange stuff that may or may not have value. I had an MFSL of Dark Side of the Moon my son wanted to buy for his wife, who is a big Pink Floyd fan. I told him well it can be a pricey album, but it's hers, for free, and happy birthday. Whatever vinyl I have left, I want it to go to someone who will love it and care for it in the spirit that I did. I would tell them: treat it with respect. Music like this will never be made again.

Greetings from the land down under Mazzy. Having just watched your video, I am in awe of your love and passion for the Coleman Collection. That this is an EXTREMELY personal thing for you which is bleeding obvious. Your approach to this whole project is so respectful and loving. The collection looks amazing and I look on enviously from afar, wishing that I were over there and able to participate in the buying. Those records would certainly find a loving home here in my humble abode. 😊❤ I would hope that someone as like-minded as yourself would show the same love, respect and dedication to my collection after I bring down the curtain and join the choir invisible. 😉🦜
I have often said that music is a very personal thing. We love what we love and collect what we collect for what ever reason. It doesn't matter that I have 25 Sgt. Pepper's. All are different somehow, in some way. It's never about the number. I'm databasing my LP's in CLZ currently, having reached STY. It has prompted me to play records that I haven't aired in so many years. It has also been a welcome escape from my current issues. Please keep doing what you're doing Mazzy. I find what you say and show to be fascinating, educational and, most importantly, fun. 😊 The unscripted aspect of your channel is something of an inspiration for my own, which has sadly been somewhat dormant of late. Life has gotten in the way. 😪 But I will get back to it soon. You speak from the heart and soul. JUST BE YOU. F**k the haters. Keep on keeping on. Bereux loves U. 👍🖖✌😊❤

I watched a programme a few years ago over in the UK and your video reminded me of it in a way. It was in a series where the presenters were trying to help people who were hoarders ( I’m not suggesting you are, btw 😄). The woman who was the subject of the programme has a pretty large CD collection, it was mainly classical as she was a violinist in an orchestra. The presenter asked her why she had so many CDs that she couldn’t possibly listen to and held one up saying ‘when did you last listen to this one, for example?’. The woman replied straight away along the lines of ‘ it doesn’t matter if I’ve not listened to it in five years, the point is that I MIGHT want to listen to it tomorrow’.

Very cool on that Coleman collection. That is a very special way to get some nice things in the collection with very powerful meaning behind them. Not mention it's so respectful they way you are doing it. Love the card and keeping his legacy with each piece. 48 years!! Wow! So sorry to hear that my friend.
I really do hate that question of "Why do yo have" what you have? You might as well ask "Why do you get things that make you happy?". It seems some people just can't seem to understand there are two elements in vinyl collecting. There is THE MUSIC and then there is "MUSIC STUFF". Some people don't care about owning "music stuff". Some people really love having more "music stuff" It's that simple. You can have 4 of the same records and each one actually carries a different meaning for you be it pressing, where you found it, how much you paid for it, etc. I really struggle to see why that is such a hard concept for people to understand. Not to mention...the values on most of your collection has probably gone up what, 5-10 fold over the past 20 years? The balls you have to have to more or less say to someone...'I am the God of the music land and I KNOW exactly how many records a human should own" lol.

Thanks for an interesting “musing” on what it is to have/be involved in a collection(s) like this. It’s like finding an Egyptian treasure house intact rather than individual artifacts in souks or bazaars. It’s evidence of a life or lives as well as the “content”, some kind of (albeit, perhaps, temporary) ongoing focus or unity of “spirit”. Continuity. Love the videos.

Love your channel. No judging, you are who you are and your interest is what it is. It's great to hear about someone's life through records. I'm 71 and grew up in Buffalo, NY. My first purchase was a 45 of "I Get Around" in the 1960's and second was the Strange Days album by the Doors as soon as it came out. I have memories of being in love with a girl at school and to this day remember her when I hear "Wild Weekend" by the Rockin' Rebels. I have and idea for you to explore as a video. I am a military vet from the Viet Nam era and I think it would be a great topic to cover as to the role vinyl and stereo gear played in the war. It's been a hidden story. Whether you were in a tent, a quonset hut, or a brick barracks in Viet Nam, Thailand, Guam, Germany, or the UK, there were ton's of GI's that bought a truckload of stereo gear and records from the Base Exchanges. It was one of the few things a young guy could do to stay connected with home. I might say many of those young men grew to become a large part of what became the first wave of the modern stereo gear and music enthusiasts. They all came back home with the widely popular 1960's/70's Japanese stereo gear of the day and all the music they played on them. I believe they played a huge role in the electronics and recording industry as they continued to influence their friends and families as to their interest in the gear and music. Anywhere you could find a joint (on base or off base), you would be listening to Eric Burdon and the Animals "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" and "Sky Pilot", Creedence's "Fortunate Son", Chicago Transit Authority I and II, Santana S/T and "Abraxas" (Thai locals loved Abraxas because the rhythms were much like their folk music), CSNY "Deja Vu", LZ II, Beatles "White Album" and "Abbey Road", Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland, Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed", Grand Funk Railroad's first three albums, Spirit's 1st, Quicksilver Messenger Service's "Just for Love". There's a ton. But for every civilian music lover's experience, there was a musical experience going on for our military men and women that became a very unique soundtrack for their lives that I don't think is accounted for much in current social media. Some of these records and stereo gear represent a time, a place, and a vibe that was an amazing sweet spot that will never be duplicated. Give it some thought. Continue having fun with your vinyl experience and screw the detractors.

Hi Mazzy, I've been watching your RUclips videos for a while, admire your presentation and discussion, and have learned a lot. And I finally subscribed tonight after seeing your latest video. As a long-time newspaper editor and reporter, I am very familiar with trolls. I just shake them off, wad them up like a piece of paper and throw them away. I never acknowledge them, and it makes life so much easier to just move on. These are your opinions, just as Rolling Stone magazine's recent list of 500 greatest songs was their collaborative opinion. My thought is that if you don't like RS's list, make your own. I did. But it was just 10 songs posted on my Facebook page. I can't imagine the effort it would have taken to come up with 500 songs. I am a Vietnam War veteran, and I too, love John & Yoko, as well as so much of the music that was the golden age of music between 1964 and 1980. Keep up the good work. We appreciate you!

Hey Mazzy - I for one love what you’re doing with these Coleman records and seeing these vids. Screw the haters! Any of us who’ve lost someone who had lots of stuff can appreciate the desire to pass that stuff on to folks who’ll love it in turn, and by those people loving it, the spirit of your friend/loved one lives on. Mazzy , VK is saying hello :) ....it has been discussed before in many VC videos of the past, what happens to your collection after you are gone? I believe I told you this also on how I wish I had a friend that would do this for me as you are doing for Coleman. My family would not have a clue where to start or how to do it. You are right, also its not just records, when people say you have so much you can't play them all, why do you need so much. To me that is like saying you do not need so many emotions, you do not need so much food with different tastes, you do not need all the memories in your brain. All the music has a place in our soundtrack of life. I do not get the all the heat you have received over the selling to the VC and your channel subscribers. I would sell the same way and offer items to my VC friends before other options. Ok VK saying later !!!

Hey Mazzy. Thank you for this video. Very honest and I commend you for that. There are some very interesting themes here.
Regarding criticism... of course you know, and may people will have said, you really can [and should] go your own way. And of course you will. Don't worry that you get some criticism. It'll always happen. Here's a thing... An old [design] tutor of mine used to say 'tall trees catch most wind'. The meaning (as I see it) is that if you do something remarkable it will get noticed - some people will love what you do, some people will hate it. Either way its better to get criticism than not getting noticed at all. And you are a tall tree indeed my friend. One of the tallest. Don't worry that you catch a breeze or two.
For my money, selling records from you friend's collection is just fine. I'm sure he's pleased they are going to good homes. And if you don't sell them here - then how can you be sure of that?
The postcard is a lovely touch.
As for owning sooo many records, and wondering where it will all end... ?
I think there is an element of compulsive behaviour in all collecting. People collect all kinds of shit. We are all magpies in that respect. Its a part of human nature. I don't have nearly as many records as you do - and still I don't have time to play them all. So is it all about the music? I'm not totally sure. Maybe you'll slow down as you run out of room. Do you have records in your bedroom yet? How about the bathroom?
    D x

The way you are honoring Coleman is beautiful. His records that are now in your collection you show a great reverence to as they are attached to the memories and stories you shared with your friend. I see the same thing for the ones that are being sold. And with those you can get a small glimpse into who the records are going to. Record collecting is a very personal thing. That has been my biggest takeaway over these past several days and discussions kicked off by Alan. I've been at a crossroads recently with my collection. I'm starting to be able to say "I don't need this in my collection" vs. "I have to have this in my collection." You have a fantastic music library and your collecting habits work for you. That's all that matters.
