There are people who scorn Liszt, but I do not agree with them. When I was 10 y.o., I wanted to be Liszt, he was my idol, and still now I deeply admire him. I find this piece superb. Thank you for sharing it.
@@niccolopaganini4268 , Earlier in the 19th century, classical music was still the biggest thing, like Liszt, Brahams, and Straus. But, by the turn of the 20th century, classical music was no longer the top music to the majority of people. That's when other kinds of music started grabbing the public's interest, such as the Barbershop quartets and the romantic bands with tunes like "In the good ol summertime", "By the light of the silvery moon", "Sweet Adeline", etc., and the Ragtime like Mapleleaf Rag, The Entertainer, etc. And then the speakeasy jazz music of the roaring twenties that took by storm, like "The Charleston", "Nobody but you", Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, etc.
@Jordan Schlansky , I must say that one of the most intense and seemingly difficult to learn piano pieces that I've ever seen is Stravinsky's The Firebirds. Look it up on RUclips and it has the sheet music on screen, just like Liszt pieces such as the one here. The Firebirds looks more difficult than anything by Liszt.
If you think of it the first rhapsody is really the most essential of them all. No one starts with this piece usually, but it has all the techniques of all others, some are harder or easier and extend on certain ideas, yet everything is already here. Shame its so underrated, its much harder then its 2 famous counterparts in the same key.
I would like to know whether anybody of those who scorn and criticize Liszt are able to write such music like this (or still better). If they do not like it (since it is not mandatory to like anything), it will be enough for them to follow the rule of Russian etiquette: "if you cannot say anything nice, say nothing". This said, thank you one more time for sharing this beauty.
You can call yourself very lucky, Caroline. Those who do are not worth the attention anyway, Simon Barere once said they are mostly frustrated individuals who can't play his music!
To criticize you do not need to be as good as. I really enjoy Liszt, though his musicality was lower than his virtuosity, in most pieces, and that's the only criticism I'd give him.
I don't comment on his transcriptions but his original works are sublime, and far from "lower than his virtuosity" . . . far more so than even Chopin in my opinion. If I had to choose only one composer to play and listen to that would be Liszt beyond any shadow of doubt.
Learnin it since yesterday, very intense to play ! I feel like I'm really telling a dream for each note I'm playin :) each Hungarian Rhapsody is pure happiness to hear and play as well

Beautifully interpreted! Cziffra's interpretations are my absolute favorite! I do prefer the recordings he did on the Connoisseur label. And that was the label he did his arrangements of the 16th and 19th Rhapodies on. I could be wrong. But I think this recording is from the first recordings of the rhapodies, 50s, I think.
