Hyperion is one of the only sci-fi books I’ve ever actually enjoyed. It’s writing style is beautiful and I connected with each character and their story. The character work is probably the best I’ve ever read in sci-fi and it’s really unfortunate you didn’t like it. I will say that the next book isn’t great, especially if you didn’t like the first. Don’t bother reading it.
@@antanowrites I tried the expanse. It’s was the first epic sci fi book I read. I didn’t enjoy it and since then I’ve read 6 other sci fi books - red rising, Hyperion, fall of Hyperion, dune, the Martian and enders game. The only two I liked were Hyperion and enders game, the rest I found incredibly boring. I love epic fantasy but just can’t do sci fi and I’ve learnt not to waste money on stuff that I’m very unlikely to even slightly enjoy
Would you PLEASE read and review the An Unbelievable Truth series? I've yet to find a reviewer talking about these books at all, and they are FANTASTIC! There are 3 books out so far, and I believe the 4th book comes out around January or February. I read a lot, and these books are not like anything else I've read. It's criminal that it seems people don't really know about them. The 3 books currently available are- Book I- An Unbelievable Truth *Author's Edition (make sure you get the Author's Editions of books I & II) by Joshua Ryan Erwin Book II- A New Beginning *Author's Edition by Joshua Ryan Erwin Book III- Elijah the Great by Joshua Ryan Erwin They were recommended to me by a friend and now I recommend them to anyone who will listen! THEY ARE SO GOOD!! Happy reading, and I hope to see a review of these books from you at some point!
I can understand being frustrated with the ending. His editor made him split the story, so you really do need to read at least Fall of Hyperion. It’s my second favorite sci-fi of all time lol.
I had some extra credits for Audible I needed to spend and grabbed this one and it was clearly not over. I had to get the 2nd book just to finish the story to figure out what I felt about it. I have mixed feeling about it too. Good writer, that's for sure. Story is kind of deep. I think I'll have to "read" it again to get a solid take on it.
Hyperion is one of the most in depth world building, character developed and narrative building I have ever read, yeah its not easy, way too many science concepts but not 3/5. WTF
I personally love the Hyperion cantos, and all thing Dan Simmons. But let me tell ya, this might be the best booktube channel out there. Great selection, honesty, and insightful commentary. Keep it up brother, love it!!
It felt more like an author giving me his high thoughts about what the future entails. Some interesting concepts and decently told stories, but I agree this book is 3 stars for me. Points for being unique, but just frustrating to read at points.
I haven’t read Hyperion, but this is probably the biggest surprise I’ve had since watching your channel. 🤞 here’s to hoping you love Drawing of the Three 😅😅😅
Read it maybe 30 years ago and love it, one of my favorites. Wish I could remember more of it. It was disappointing that the Shrike, so prominent, is not a part of the stories. It comes into play in the second book which I've also read. I skipped the others. Does the series hold together though? Once you know what is going on do the parts all work logically? I'm not sure they really do. I think Simmons may have bit off more than he can chew.
I had similar feelings about Hyperion as you. I liked the sequel a lot more and they are basically one book split in half, that's why it had such a bummer abrupt ending. Second book ends properly and has great concepts in it. I've never understood why first book is so much more popular. Even among hardcore Hyperion or Dan Simmon fans. Endymion duology is a sequel with new main character but I haven't read it yet. A re-read is due for this series, it's been almost a decade since I read it and it was among the first proper adult sci-fi books I touched. And regarding Simmons, he's one of the most versatile authors ever. He can write any genre and he'll pretty much nail it. I recommend Terror (also a very good TV show) and Song of Kali, which isn't very popular compared to his other books because it was his debut, but I enjoyed the atmosphere tremendously.
Hi! Nice review, but you have to read The Fall of Hyperion as well. The two together form one complete story arc (basically they form one book). When you finish the first book you’re in the middle of the story. (Same goes for Endymion and The Rise of Endymion). I think Simmons actually intended to publish the two books together, but it was split by the editors due to the length. I always think of the Cantos as two books, Hyperion and Endymion; with 2 volumes each. Cheers! :)
The fact that you still felt it was worthy of 3/5 considering you disliked all the literary elements and the genre it belongs to says a lot. Really liked hearing the perspective from someone with a different taste in books. Funny thing, I’ve heard some people who’ve read all the books either really liked the first two and didn’t like the last two and there are some that didn’t care as much for the first two but loved the last two books. If you ended up reading all the books, curious if you might fall into that latter camp? I haven’t read it yet but I plan to start reading Hyperion soon :)
I thought the stories were 2 each of fantastic (Priest, Scholar), good (Poet, Consul), and bad (Detective, Soldier), and the plot keeping them together was pretty good. It seems like Simmons bit off a bit more than even he could chew, and the amount of references to other literary figures felt like Simmons was waving his hands in front of my eyes as I read. It's a 3.5/5 from me, but a fun 3.5!
The wider story is very compelling, very interesting in the fall but if you didn't like the first the second is more syfy..ish and probably won't be enjoyed unless you're more curious about the wider world.
I just got a copy of Hyperion last week and was planning to read it soon. But i think I’ll put a pause and start Locke Lamora instead, so I can do the buddy read! 😇
I love Dan's horror stuff more than his other work. I might be a bit biased though cuz I'm just generally more of a horror guy than a fantasy guy haha.
I read Hyperion 6 weeks ago so I've had time to reflect on it. I enjoyed the book and liked the Canterbury Tales format with only one of the stories being one I didn't really care for. For what it was I thought it was masterfully done and some of the characters really appealed to me and I'd like to find out what happens to them in the next book when I finally get to it, and yes the ending was very abrupt with no conclusion and I agree maybe the cantos is one of those things that needs to be read in its entirety. So overall I think it's a great book, but it's not the second coming of Christ as it seems to be for some - or I'd have read the Fall of Hyperion already!
Yet to read The Terror myself, but I did like the AMC series (the first season that actually adapts The Terror, they tried to make it a horror anthology after that)
Boy, I thought there was something wrong with me, because I'm not really connecting with this book, either. I thought the priest's tale was fairly good. Now I'm reading the soldier's tale, and I don't care for it at all. Ready to call it quits on this, gonna keep going for a little while longer to see what I think.
Yeah was a real tough read for me too. One of the stories you may like in it though, is the one of the teacher and his daughter’s life. That was probably the best, along with the priest one. Others seemed like padding as maybe he needed some extra characters in the main story to tie it together. The soldier one was crap. Same with the drunk poet and the lady’s story, ugh. Simply annoying. I haven’t read the second book so I assume it comes to a conclusion better than how it ended in book 1.
I personally loved Hyperion for its Canterbury style story telling. Though some stories were better than others in my mind, the narrative structure and the journey of the pilgrims was fascinating to me. But yeah, that ending was a tad abrupt. Thanks for the review though. I found your critique to be very fair. Hope the next patron book you tackle gives you a bit more enjoyment.
Yeah, it was “ok”, but that’s it really. Was a bit disappointed myself. Main story dragged on and I didn’t feel much connection with the characters overall. One or two of the short stories were ok, rest were rather dull. Overall I agree a 3 out of 5, or 6 of 10 max. Another book I chose specifically because it is in a bunch of highly rated books to read, again I find myself wondering how it’s rated so highly.
Love this book, but (unpopular opinion) prefer Fall of Hyperion. I did enjoy most of the Pilgrims' stories (favorites being Lenar Hoyt's and Sol Weintraub's), but the story happening in the present of Hyperion was my favorite part and the second book has a lot more of that. Agreed the "ending" of Hyperion is not good because it's not an ending, and the reason for that is because Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion were intended to be one novel initially and were split by the publisher. Same goes for the sequels Endymion and Rise of Endymion.
Interesting comments some people leave here... Anyways, yea, I totally respect your review on Hyperion. I read this before I became a diehard Simmons fan, and it was tough for me as well. I had no experience with Sci-fi and some of it was a bit too much for me. I loved it on a re-read, though, and loved the rest of the series from there. And hey, even if the book isn't for you, I think it's cool that you went for it and read the whole thing!
Just wait in the next books to understand what are the Time Tombs. Who really are those so called "monsters". And what awaits the characters. You have to read the whole Cantos to understand the genius of the saga. Thats the truth.
The books really get much more deep and more epic in the next volume. 3-4especially. The first is a setup basically. Totally worth the effort. One of the best space operas ever
I just finished the first book a couple of minutes back ahahah. Just read the Consul’s story and finished late into the night and I have school tomorrow😂. I freaking love this book, I am so hooked onto this. I heard that the next book - The Fall of Hyperion is equally good but it becomes lacklustre in quality from the Endymion part, that is the 3rd and 4th books. Is that true? Also will the same characters exist in the later books?
this is maybe my favorite book ever and i was ready to be upset and debate you in my head in the shower as one does but i cant fault a single thing you said. most agreeable disagreement i’ve ever felt this is a moment of personal growth for me im gonna remember you for my whole life lets go
I’m never going to understand why people keep recommending books that they have no reason to think you’ll like. I never read Hyperion but just going off what you said I would’ve figured you wouldn’t like it based on your taste so it should never have been recommended to you. I also had mixed feelings on this book. Parts were good and yes, the ending was incredibly abrupt so the book is a 500 page prologue. I was very disappointed in Fall. Simmons seemed to get to eneamored in his cleverness and he essentially copied half the plot from Frank Herbert. I did get the next two at Half Price so will see if I ever continue.
I just finished Hyperion and also did not love it despite everyone on the internet praising it so highly, so naturally, I took to RUclips, and sure enough, Matt’s Fantasy Book’s reviews agrees with me YET AGAIN

Loved Hyperion!!! One of my favorite books!!! The Fall of Hyperion was, very good. Endymion was, Ehh & The Rise Of Endymion I DNF’d!
Every time I touch classic sci fi stuff i feel it is more about the "concept" over the execution of a story and ends up being a 3/5
Yeah, well stated!
