As an owl city fan for a long time, almost since the beginning. I find Adam to be one of those musicians who want to explore their craft and music. I respect that.
Oh my goodness, the way you explained how you connect to Owl City music back then and now is exactly how I feel man, I can't seem to put it to words but you perfectly described it. Cheers mate!
Love your analysis. As someone who also grew up with owl city, I agree with almost everything you've said. Also heck that owl city thing u just created on the spot I wish I could do that too
I believe that Adam used to use his music production as a coping mechanism for depression. He also romanticized the ocean and the west coast (being a small town boy from Minnesota). After touring the globe, your romantic view of the world may change to more of a realism than a romanticism. After _All Things_ , the music really changed. The whimsical descriptions of the world through cotton candy clouds turned more into "happy pop." And now we find ourselves at _Cinematic_ ......bye Owl City. I'll see you in my dreams. :(
I actually like this. It's just easy to listen to, with its catchy melodies. Even though, in my opinion, every song after "Unbelievable" just doesn't feel like the first half. The first 5 tracks have this innocent and harmless attitude, which the second half is missing.
Review was great, editorial work was great, you earned my thumbs up. I'm going through my late teens at the moment, but the earlier OC songs remind me of my younger years, and bring back a lot of memories. I'm hopeful for Cinematic, as the track previews are amazing so far!
I have enjoyed owl city but I do agree with him. At least it is better than Midsummer Station. Also I have to say. His attempt at making an owl city song actually (in my opinion) sounded better then Owl City himself.
Loved this review... and I actually couldn’t agree more! Also your commentary kept cracking me up. But for real, so many of your points song by song I had literally thought the very same thing before. This just validated them that much more for me 😂 so yeah, thanks!!
I agree with a lot of things you say. I found Mobile Orchestra lacking overall, though I do listen to a few of the tracks from time to time. As a big, big, BIG fan since his very earliest albums (which I listened to when I was eleven and fell in love with for eternity) I'm always holding on to the hope that he will return to his roots and make music like he used to, without all of these bland mainstream-pop approaches and lacking love lyrics. The only part I disagree with really are the things you said about My Everything, but besides that, you made so many great points!!
this is my first time seeing this video and i am also a huge owl city fan of many years. now that the previews for cinematic are out, I just think the similarities between the lyrics to firebird and something you said are amazing. "..but it's alright, 'cause everything changes."
Really interesting to hear what you had to say about this album towards the end about never being able to capture that same magic simply because of time. Those first few Owl City records were also ones that I feel like I grew up with (although I heard them when I was younger than you) and I think it is inevitable that I'll never really connect with a record like Maybe I'm Dreaming in the same way ever again. Despite that, I recently came across a few old Owl City b-sides or bonus tracks or something that I had never heard and I did fall in love with them because they were in his old style, so I still think that he has mostly fallen off for me because of the music itself.
I know what you mean, I guess there is a point where the music is somewhat to blame too. What are the b-sides and demos called man? I'd be super interested to have a listen to them if i haven't already :)
I think they were Shy Violet and How I Became The Sea. I was pretty surprised to come across them since I thought I knew most of his extra non-album tracks.
Hey... I edited together and made a "ringtone" out of what you call "Silliest sh*t ever" starting at 7:50 on to around 8:35, edited together into one coherent piece. Is it alright if I post the ringtone to my Tumblr blog? I'd be sure to give you credit and link back to this video. Huge Owl City fan!! P.S. -- You should totally review an album by Twenty One Pilots, as they're another electronic band I'm a fan of, and like Adam's past work, lead singer and lyricist Tyler Joseph can "mask his words" when he talks about his Christian faith.
Yes... Here's a direct link to the post so you don't have to scroll and find it: phobias-and-fears.tumblr.com/post/161894525029/tom-l-j-white-is-a-musician-and-youtuber-who-is-a
I randomly found this artist called Matthew Mole (South African) a while back and loved his album "The Home We Built". Only just found your channel/review videos so not sure what kind of stuff you review but would be cool to hear someone else's thoughts on that because I don't know anyone who has heard of him.
Would you review older albums, like stuff from the 60's, 70's, 80's? Would love to hear your opinion on music genres that you don't normally listen to. Here are my top 10 all time favourite albums, would be awesome if you could review any of them: Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name Talking Heads - Remain in Light Can - Ege Bamyasi Area - Arbeit Macht Frei King Crimson - Larks Tongue in Aspic Milton Nascimento - Clube da Esquina Miles Davis - In A Silent Way Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
I never even fully listened to Mobile Orchestra based on the singles I heard, because I thought that they weren't even as good as Midsummer Station, which I have a love/hate relationship with. So, that tells you what I thought of the album. Though I should probably listen to it all the way through at Some point.
What do you think of the new single Keaton Henson put out yesterday? People are saying its his last as it's titled "Epilogue" and the first song in his first album was "prologue". Do you think he's finished making and putting out music??
Marlena Lesher I don't think so, I certainly hope not. I can see why people might think that, especially considering the influences from all of his past work throughout it but I'd be surprised if Keaton just never released any music again. It may well be his way of saying that chapter of his creative endeavours is finished. At the end of the day he is a genuine artist and I don't think an artist ever stops creating or needing to create art. It might be a while before any new music comes out, possibly years but I'm happy waiting patiently for something new. Maybe it'll be a completely new project but, as I said, I'd be very surprised if in 20 years time he hasn't released any new music whatsoever. It'd be bloody awful if that was the case though!
To be completely honest I actually really like Mobile Orchestra, It’s far from Owl City’s Best projecy but i still really enjoyed it My Score: 7/10 Best Songs: Verge, I Found Love, Unbelievable, Bird With a Broken Wing, Back Home, You’re Not Alone, This Isn’t The End Worst Song: My Everything
i honestly haven't even listened to it because i have too much of an attachment to ocean eyes; anyways, you should review john mayer's new record 'the search for everything' that just came out. laura mauling's got a new one too:)
I understand the argument of lazy song writing when Reviewers refer to a specific effect appearing in multiple songs. I played instruments years ago but now I don't do anything musical so I don't have much voice here but I am a Studio Artist. When I find a cool effect I can do with paintbrushes, chalk or mixes; I never know what exactly I want to do with the effect. So I end up using the effect on multiple papers/canvases and then experimenting with something different for each piece, sometimes coming to the conclusion of submitting more than one piece to my teacher. Thinking the Artist (Adam Young in this case) is being lazy for using the same effect in multiple songs doesn't seem like the case to me. It could be true but I also thought that instead of being lazy, he was just being experimental with said effect and in the end, submitted both songs to his album. I'm not much of a music critic so I enjoy whatever he releases but hearing the lazy criticism, while valid, doesn't work for me coming from another medium and that's one of the reasons I've always liked Owl City; he gives me the thrill of experimentation. Whether you liked or didn't like that effect in that one song, here's another go at that effect in another song.
I'm confused about what you're liking here... Owl City's Midsummer Station was in my opinion the best, and it really defined owl city. And each album has very different styles to it. I own all things bright and beautiful, but it's my absolute least favourite. (not to mention Ultraviolet sounded like an extension to the style of the midsummer station.) But all of the Albums have a different style to it. I've liked them all, but I just find the emotion in most music and feel it very strongly.
Your version sounds better, honestly, like, I love it. Maybe if Adam had used a more Ocean Eyes sounding synth, it would've been better, but he used "generic guitar sound number 3"
As an owl city fan for a long time, almost since the beginning. I find Adam to be one of those musicians who want to explore their craft and music. I respect that.

I love that you state your opinion but still make it clear that you respect others. Keep it up, man.
wtf i love that 7:50 to 8:35
8:15 Actually the best Owl City song I've heard in half a decade
I actually like this. It's just easy to listen to, with its catchy melodies. Even though, in my opinion, every song after "Unbelievable" just doesn't feel like the first half. The first 5 tracks have this innocent and harmless attitude, which the second half is missing.

What's your thoughts on the cover song waving through a window by owl city?
I completely love your musical interpretation in the middle, it is a theme he uses consistently. Awesome sound, what is that synth?? :)

Verge was about getting married, (he said so himself) but I get why you'd say that due to the music video.
8:15 ❤️
