I'm not sure that I've ever seen a single job advert that includes the requirement "Microsoft Office Specialist a plus"

However, how many have you seen asking for Microsoft Office skills? The certification simply sets them above the rest in the hiring process.

I’m not sure it does actually. The 80/20 rule applies. Even those jobs requiring „advanced“ skills do not make the statement.

A great initiative on the part of Microsoft however like most other competitions not inclusive. I am Visually impaired and forget about this championship the regular MOS Specialist exam is inaccessible to the blind and low vision candidates. I can understand other tech giants doing this Microsoft who talks so much about accessibility this is really disappointing. Also I have heard people within North America are provided with special accommodations I really do not know as I live outside North America.
