What kind of trust do you expect the EU has to British politicians? Why would they think the UK would keep their word and do what was sign, without trying to renegotiate everything every morning? The probability to not get a UK application vetoed by someone starting from France, is extremely low, IMO.
Which is something which isn't actually discussed by anyone: what the EU could get from accepting the UK back in, apart from Farage type of politician sitting in the EU parliament?

I am a UK citizen. I realise that British people aren't actually interested in the political and social aspects of the EU. Most people are, however, in favour of the single market. The electorate voted to terminate EU membership. However, the tories also terminated our single market participation. That has been the contentious factor.
Although I would prefer to be an EU member, I understand that the rest of the country wouldn't be in favour. As an alternative, I would hope we seek EFTA/EEA membership and join Norway and the rest of the EEA members. Yes I do know what EEA membership entails - no involvement in major decision making, not being subject to the European Court of Justice but having more autonomy over our agricultural and fishery legislation. I think this would be the most rational and legitimate route to regain single market participation. I wouldn't say that all leave voters wanted to abandon the single market, anyway. All leave voters had their individual reason for voting leave. One thing I can be sure of is that they all did not want to be part of a political union anymore (the EU).

Returning to the EU is as Guto says, not likely to happen in the foreseeable future, but I do think it may happen long before Guto Harri departs this world. IF, it happens at all. However, the EU will insist on the UK being a full member and that will include the adoption of the Euro and possibly being part of Schengen, although being separated by the sea, this may in practice be only pragmatic via the Channel Tunnel. By leaving, the UK has forfeited any and all its clout to negotiate any concessions. Also, whilst the economy is in the doldrums and the political mood in the country miserable at the current time and therefore an upswing in support for rejoining, any upturn in the economy and better times will quickly allay a lot of that support. For the people of the UK to want to rejoin in significant numbers that the politicians dare to deal with the 'B' word again, the UK will likely need to suffer from prolonged economic woes and very minimal growth. I've lived long enough to know that better times will come, even by hanging onto the success of others and when they do, the mood changes. In short, the damage has been done.

VDL can re-open the question, but it is OBVIOUS that special concessions or opt outs will never be on the table.
Britain has also sold itself to dark money. GCHQ is now run by...Amazon, the NHS is being broken up, the BoE is run by Con Think Tanks, the taxpayer no longer owns anything as it has been sold off to rentiers. It is a mess on a scale of 1979 Britain.
For the EU27 to accept GB's candidature, this has to be accepted unanimously. Ukraine has a far better chance than bankrupt Britain.

You mean like the loss of £billions back from the EU into deprived areas of the UK that YOUR Tories promised to replace but did not? What we paid the EU (and by the way we were the EU as much as France or Germany is) was a bargain.
Now here is the new deal which employers believe is a bargain. They can an do import 1,200,000 people from India and Africa etc per year and are able to pay them 20% less per year. This is to make up for the EU people that left due to racism and covid who were doing real jobs and paying tax in the UK, like the NHS for eg. And the reason that this is worse, is that most EU immigrants came with just themselves, The new (Brexit) immigrants bring their families which, unlike EU people did not put undue pressure on our NHS and schools etc. You people actually voted for this. Trade Barriers: The UK's departure from the EU single market and customs union has resulted in the imposition of new trade barriers, affecting the flow of goods and services.
Supply Chain Disruptions: Increased border checks and customs procedures have led to delays and disruptions in supply chains, affecting businesses and industries.
Financial Services: London's status as a financial hub has been challenged, with some financial institutions relocating parts of their operations to the EU to maintain access to the single market.
Fishing Industry: Changes in fishing regulations and access to waters have impacted the UK fishing industry negatively.
Labour Shortages: New immigration policies and restrictions have contributed to labour shortages in certain industries, such as agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality.
Border Issues: The Northern Ireland Protocol has created a de facto customs border in the Irish Sea, leading to tensions and disruptions in trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
Tariffs and Customs Duties: The imposition of tariffs on certain goods has increased costs for businesses engaged in international trade.
Compliance Costs: Companies now face additional costs associated with meeting new regulatory requirements for customs, standards, and regulations.
Reduced Access to EU Research Programs: The UK's exclusion from EU research programs has potentially limited opportunities for collaboration and funding in scientific research.
Changes in Student Mobility: Changes in visa regulations and participation in EU educational programs have affected student mobility and academic collaboration.
Economic Uncertainty: The prolonged Brexit negotiations and ongoing uncertainties surrounding the future relationship have contributed to economic uncertainty and affected investor confidence.
Price Increases: Higher costs for imported goods and changes in market dynamics have led to price increases for consumers.
Increased numbers of Asylum Claims: Leaving the Dublin Agreement without replacement returns agreements in place has contributed to large increases in the number of asylum claims to the UK, overflowing immigration processing centres and requiring prolonged and expensive use of hotels to house applicants.
