The Gogol Suite -- first commissioned in 1976 as incidental music to a play -- is only a minor work by the Russian polystylist composer, yet it is highly imaginative and includes some interesting orchestration, among other aspects. In it, one can find the usual musical quotes (for example, Beethoven's 5th symphony in the "Overture") but also many original themes.
00:00 - I. Overture - Allegro.
01:20 - II. Chichikov's Childhood - Andantino.
03:39 - III. The Portrait.
11:01 - IV. The Overcoat - Andante.
13:20 - V. Ferdinand VIII
14:16 - VI. The Civil Servants - Allegro.
17:01 - VII. The Ball - Tempo di Valse.
23:34 - VIII. The Testament - Pesante.
(25:50 - Ukrainian Folk Song.)
The rights of this recording go to their respective owners.
Schnittke is sarcastic, love his work.
I haven't experienced this much musical delight listening to a piece in a long time. But I really have to give kudos for the virtuoso "Musician's Whistle" passage on Flexatone at 18:47
Fantastic - this composer was not afraid of .... different music. Thx for sharing.
I love how Schnittke so beautifully pays homage to classical and romantic composers like here he uses Beethoven's 5th and the main melody from the overture to Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Just perfect!!
lol i just noticed the 5th
Both of those are classic
That’s exactly how my dreams in fever sound
@maxim5469 -- ......and that's without being in a persistent vegetative state......Cheers from Acapulco!
How much fun Schnittke will have had writing this piece? A lot I guess.
no doubt. The fun stuff in there plus all the mini homages thrown in. A real hodge podge of fun, and that's not to say it lacks tying together. This piece as as "tied together" as the best composers could possibly do without doing it a disservice!
Tom and Jerry
Is that you?
This is dope!!!!
@Rudy Shiloh why would you do that...
that Beethoven 5 quote wasn't expected
How mournful the last was... so good
Absolutely mesmerizing!!!!! Had no idea that this suite existed, thank you for sharing this wonderful recording with us!
Well...Alfred Schittke is one of the best composers of XX Century.
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly lost the password. I love any tips you can offer me!
@Terrance Langston thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Terrance Langston It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
@Deandre Parker No problem xD
Pure genius. What a set of pieces! Full of humour, pathos and gravitas.
Wow I love this piece so much! Easily one of my favorite Schnittke pieces, and this has to be the best recording I've heard so far.
omg i never noticed this until now, 20:49 in the trumpet is quoting Mahler 5th symphony.
this man is a guiness
20:48 schnittke's tango citation
Thank you for this upload! Schnittke is one of my favorite composers
Schnittke is a genius
Cosi precisa e leggera, Soave. Grazie Schnittke e grazie Marcel.
crazy how the overture always manages to make me laugh my kidney off
Overture: That is DEFINITELY Schnittke..................the score has squiggly lines.
Next mvmt: Wait.................WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SCHNITTKE?????!!!!
He’s Haydn
Just played the that piece.
It was really enjoyable and one of the kind composition 👍👍👍
Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful suite with the sheet music! It was once uploaded on another channel that was unfortunately removed from RUclips.
I noticed that the video was gone. Truly a wonderful suite, you're wecome!
@@MarcelSimader That whole channel is gone. :(
You're probably talking about jleightcap, if I'm not mistaken. The deletion of his channel was pretty tragic for me personally, as his taste in music was quite close to my own.
@@bashirabdel-fattah9499 Yup, that's who we're talking about. So sad...
@@MarcelSimader Thanks for this - it was a nice surprise to find a replacement for the jleightcap video that was taken down!
Funny how the Ukrainian Folk Song sounds like the postlude of the first Concerto Grosso
This could be the soundtrack to a perfect piece of visual comedy.
Part 3 reminded me of the British comedian Les Dawson playing piano.
That was something else! 🔥
Magnifique !!!!!!!!!!!

those sounds as if Spike Jones was kidnapped and held in a remote Siberian gulag for 30 years.
Why is no one saying the Chichikov’s childhood sound almost exactly like Haydn’s Surprise Symphony?
When I heard it, I thought of Haydn's "the Clock", 2nd movement
Which recording version is it please ?
I love Schnittke 😍
The only time I really enjoy Mozart is when Schnittke composes or uses it.
Can you do Faust Cantata please?
I can put it on my schedule but I can't guarantee that I'll be able to upload it and it might take quite a while. I'll try though!
Let's pay some respect to the musicians as well ❗
Who is playing, which orchestra is that ⁉️

Beethoven 5 quote
Was that one-cent coin available in ex-USSR?
22:00 😂😂😂
14:20 is that zauberflöte overture?
Hi! I'ts possible to make this score disponible to download?
God I love schnittke

Scraping the high end of the strings(?)
What kind of the ball is that?
@Felis Sorabjitus The red army just broke into that ball.

18:47 what does Fisch. refer to?
I think it's the whistling of the performers as notated.
Does anyone have orchestral parts?

14:26 sounds like Mozarts Magic Flute
is "The overcoat" a parody of hungarian rhapsody no 2 Friska?
It sounds more to me like Rachmaninoff's Italian Polka, which incidentally also has a part that sounds like the Hungarian Rhapsody.
omfg what is that

Chopin enjoyer discovers experimental music: 😨😨😨
I’m sorry Chopin, it’s good
Something wonderful, that's what it is!

For those who say classical music is boring, listen to this...
(Plz don't take this coment too seriously)
Ok
WTF
I cannot stand some of Schnittke's music, like his string quartet. But... I absolutely LOVE this!
