“Mpox is not the new COVID,” WHO says amid virus surge in Europe, Africa

- Despite being declared a global public health emergency on Wednesday, a World Health Organization (WHO) official says monkeypox, or “mpox,” is not “the new COVID,” amid rising fears.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the WHO’s European director Hans Kluge said that we are not only able, but “must tackle” both the new and old strains (clade 1 and 2) of the infectious disease “together.”
“Will we choose to put the systems in place to control and eliminate mpox globally? Or we will enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the years to come will prove a critical test for Europe and the world,” Kluge said.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some outbreaks have killed up to 10 per cent of those who became sick, though recent outbreaks have had lower rates.
Clade 1, the newer, more contagious strain of mpox, has been spreading across much of Africa since being first detected in the Kamituga region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. But last week, a case was reported in Sweden, in someone who had travelled to an affected African country - becoming the first diagnosed outside of the continent.
Though much more is known about clade 2 - which ravaged much of Europe in 2022 - approximately 100 new cases of the strain are reported in the continent monthly.

i remember when covid was first came out they said its not gonna be a global pendamic
21 years ago(2003) there was a US monkeypox outbreak, 47 cases, across 6 states. The 2003 outbreak was notable, because it was the first time monkeypox had been reported outside Africa. But no media hysteria. Doctors interviewed back then said not to worry, since it was hard to contract
