    Matt, you’re a gem of RUclips. You’re absolutely nuts, totally weird, totally unique. RUclips (and general mainstream media) need more people like you! I don’t mean to cause offense but surely you’d be the first to admit that you naturally slot into the excitable nerd range of the petrolhead spectrum.. good! Your enthusiasm is infectious and you’re really likeable because there is no agenda or pretense. Been following this channel for s good 6 months or so now and just felt it was time to show the love and appreciation. Keep on rock in’, Matt!

    I hadn’t seen one of there in years until last month. I was driving to the mountains when one slowly eased by me on a rural highway. The top was down, children in the back were happily waving their arms in the slipstream as the adults chatted away up front. They all looked so happy. It was so incongruous with modern cars and modern times that it was shocking. Here was a car that was not that old but spoke to a world that seemed vary different and distant. Car like this used to be everywhere (at least in the southern USA). People bought them to use every day. Modern CUV’s are every bit as fuel effi

    I've got an old 98 convertible GT here in the states. Bought it pretty cheap, I use it for my side hustle as a pizza delivery driver. It's so much fun. Mine's white with black leather, auto transmission, 170k on the odometer. Still runs like a top. Getting paid to drive it is a dream.

    Mind the 4 wheel steering if this one has it. My aunty had one of these eons ago. My cousin inadvertently pressed the button to activate the steering. Next time my aunty drove it, the wheels fetched the exhaust off. The 3SGE engine dated back to the gen 4 Celica from 1985 which I believe could also be purchased as a convertible in the UK. However, the gen 5 Celica from 89 - 93 were only available in the UK as a hatchback. All gen 5 coupe and convertibles were all grey imports in to the UK. It wasn't until the release of the gen 6 Celica in 1993 that the convertible was once again directly sold in the UK.

    Super cool car though, and great looking especially for its age😎
    A note about Japanese boots, you said they don’t usually have a button to open the boot, just a key hole, or a pull switch by the drivers seat. Well actually my 2005 Avensis has a soft touch button hidden by the rear number plate light, you just press and hold it and pull up the boot lid , there’s no switch inside the car, it just has one near the drivers door pocket for the fuel filler flap👍🏻

    Your video has got me fired up again to own another Celica Convertible. My last one was a gen 5 which I imported from Japan 18 years ago which involved a SVA test when it arrived in the UK with it being less than 10 years old at the time. A quick search online and there are dozens of gen 6 and some gen 5 convertibles still available for export from Japan with extremely low mileage and as they are now over 10 years old, I believe the SVA test (or whatever its called now) doesn't apply so quite straight forward to get one registered in the UK.

    The bonnet spoiler is only for the GT-Four. Someone has retrofitted it to that car. The GT-Four had an aluminium bonnet and it was there to stop bonnet flex at speed. I have never heard of one being a factory option for the ST202's as their bonnets were steel.

  • @gosportjamie
    @gosportjamie 4 года назад

    Of course, part of the reason they were so rare was the fact that they were properly expensive in the UK. As memory serves you could get a pretty decent model BMW 3-Series convertible for the same sort of money, so you'd really need to want the Toyota to buy one new. And the fact that they were not factory-built cars, even if they were factory-approved probably didn't help either as the '90s wasn't really a period when the US had a great reputation for building cars well. I do have to say, though, that for a converted convertible, rather than a car designed to be a soft top, they really do look very good...

    A very rare spec in a very rare Celica. Celicas were always great cars rwd to fwd and convertible options and just kept getting better. Makes you wonder why Ford let the Capri die and fade away. Celicas prove that the coupe market remained. The Calibra was gorgeous, but the Celica was better. Those taillamps are uber cool. JDM accessories are mind boggling probably because the Japanese are proper Petrolheads. 🇯🇵. Bring back full size spare wheels. Just get dealers to tell people to carry less luggage.

    "Such shaky footage today. This car must be flexing and wobbling along the road, like driving a shoe box without the lid."
    Then I noticed the camera was angled sideways from the windscreen, not the passenger window, and it has a massive lens suspended at a 90 degree angle. The Celica probably doesn't flex much at all, the camera glass just adds a lot of weight on the suction cup mount.

    As someone who knows about cars and can name every make and model of most VWs BMWs Ferrari Porsche etc etc i can honestly say i never knew Toyota made a convertible Celica!! it totally defeats the original concept of the Celica as taking away the roof must make the car very wobbly round corners and also less top speed etc etc so odd.

      They even made a coveritble concept of the last/seventh gen Celica which looks amazing! Although as you say the performance impact would take away from the lightweight sports coupe feeling

    I would have like to have seen what the car looked like without that stupid roof cover, and see how it would look and ride without it.
    If I found it completely driveable without it, that cover would go straight in the bin.

    Lose the tea shelf bit, never heard of it - perhaps it was a thing back in the 50's or 60's, don't need it, either a car has cup holders or it does not- they are not a tea shelf. That cup holder is demonstrably not a shelf so calling it that is daft. Dash boards do not consider and have not considered putting things on them for decades- certainly in none of my cars, perhaos people movers did but not even them now. Does not work like a triangle of doom gimmick, which is a point for driving at least. Once again- STOP IT!
