Beautiful. I am hoping that I will be able to get one of her quarters. I live on the mainland an don’t know if they will reach my area. Congratulations to the wonderful islands of Hawaii. I was blessed to live in Oahu for a short three years. I left a part of my soul there. ❤
I too lived on Oahu for several years. Everyone should visit the islands, a trip of a lifetime. We will probably see the "Oahu Quarter" here on the mainland mid to late summer is my guess. Aloha!
I feel lucky to learn of Auntie today, and this only deepens my memories of my lone summer living in Hilo in 1972. May memories of Auntie continue and grow for decades into the future! 🎉
This is way overdue. I wish she could have been honored while she lived. This summer I am going to teach my all haoli music students Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai even though it is quite difficult and for them will be additionally so. It was her signature song and they are likely to hear it if they venture to the Islands. I live in Oakland CA and would love to give each student an Edith Kanakaole quarter. I have no idea where to get them. Anybody know?
I have difficulty recognizing the "honor" of having the inoa a me maka of one of our great cultural icons on the blood money of our occupier and oppressor. Its the same kind of confusion and frankly abhorrence that I felt when the US Navy named one of its nuclear submarine warmongering death machines after my kupuna ho'āli'i Pai'ea Kamehameha, who earned the honorable title Kamehameha the Great by ending war and creating The Hawaiian Kingdom as a nation dedicated to maluhia a me aloha.
Excellent point!! It would be good if they returned the land to indigenous Hawaiians. You're people don't benefit from her image on the coin. If some care to, they will explore the history that was never taught in school. Colonizers tell their own 'his' story. The lies! That's why the custodians of culture and traditions are so critical to a community of people. I thought IZ Kamakawiwoʻole was also a wonderful advocate for Hawaiian rights.

This is how white american playing snicky.... This is all in their interest it is not about respecting Hawaiian Icon don't be foolish.... Much respect to Hawaiian People Peace and Love
I respectfully wonder what the 1940s Japanese would have done to the islands if Hawaii wasn't a part of the USA? I understand and respect your feelings, but your views don't take into consideration the real world consequences of history. You have no enemies- only extended Ohana. Aloha and 💙 be with you

Uh I'm not impressed because Washington is on the back of the coin.
Yes I was thinking the same.
