Focal is one of the best high line speaker maker. If you like hearing what is really produced, Focal is will work for you. I have them in two cars and was looking at Morel Hybrids but they don’t compare. The elate by Morel might run with the Focal K2 series. Great review Mark.

Question for you. Have you ever seen/built driver enclosures for a door before? Would you think there would be a disadvantage to building a custom speaker enclosure for a door, sort of like those stick in foam driver protectors? However, instead of foam it would be fiberglass with a foam gasket on the flange to seal the driver to the enclosure. I do like my Harman Kardon oem speakers powered by a oem amp. They have nice punchy bass and it doesn't seem to roll off closer to full volume like some oem speaker/amp system would. To a degree it seems to be over driving them and I haven't really encountered any/much distortion with the proper eq set. Do you think using a 8inch shallow depth driver in an enclosure would sound good mounted in a door? Or would having a free airing driver with a higher range be better?

Old school MB Quart along with Morel were among the best you could get in the mid 90's. I still have a set of Quart "competition" components with the smaller tweeters from that era. The metal tweeters can be harsh without eq.
how are you powering all your speakers here? Are you running the woofer, midrange, and tweeter off the same amp channel? or separate channels? That’s why I was somewhat shocked to see the single terminals on each side of the sub (not my favorite, but acceptable) with the an empty terminal hole on each side... I’m not sure if they offer a dvc in this line, but that could explain it I suppose
I believe they use this basket on the Access line of subwoofers as well. I think technically the split wiring is more advantageous for the speaker as it leads to balance each side of the spider, but definitely not as easy to wire.
I have a 21 Ford F-150 reg cab that I just want to upgrade the speakers, so just two door speakers and two A pillars. Can you run Focals off a stock head unit and no amp and still have it sound good? Or is it not worth it unless you add an amp?
I have front and rear focals in my 2020 F150, along with a sub. I do have an amp, though it's fed from the factory head unit. Technically speaking, you could just swap speakers out, but I really don't think you'd be getting your money's worth. The factory head unit really doesn't deliver much power, and it's more than likely the focal speakers are made to be driven by far more than what the factory head unit puts out. Granted, it would still be a vast sound improvement, but once you hear how good these things sound, you'll probably be wishing you had an amp to drive them.
I see that you chose to go with the Kevlar series speakers 3 way system, but with a flax sandwich subwoofer. Why didn’t you choose to keep it all in the family with either Kevlar or flax to keep the same timbre?

Against mille pros, midbass is just as rich. The tweets it's where it's at; The milles have silk domes which have a softer approach to high end, and the focals are a bit harsher. It's not a bad thing, but focal has a crispier high end than Hertz.
novemberromeo78 its because he is using a 3 way setup, the highs are up on the dash while the midbass can essentially be anywhere in the front as its not as directional as the highs.
Find someone running these and listen to them. I never wanted to like them but have owned everything from Access in 2005 to K2 Power. There are other high end brands to consider also. Trust your ears and good luck!
Jon, I have worked with Focal since Boston Acoustic stoped producing car audio. I wish we had switched years before that! The Focal products have a very rich sound that is unbeatable. The tweeters don’t have the harsh sound that some others do. I personally have the Utopia M series in one of my cars and will be doing a KX3 install on my daily driver soon. I encourage you to make the switch. You won’t regret it! Deaton.
Bendmac Manufacturing I’m surprised you find the silk done tweeter of the JL to be harsh, as that is uncharacteristic of such a tweeter. Maybe try lowering the dB of the tweeter on the crossover.
@@jameselam8263 I hope to hear the C7s someday. JL Audio really needed some world class mids and highs! Hope they work out. Don't know anyone running them.
@@johnclark3067 well they cost $2,000. I have them. I'm in central Illinois. I would try and find a dealer in your area to get an audition. Each brand has it's own sound it's just a matter of preference. JL and Morel have a smoother less bright sound. Focal and Hertz have a brighter sound so to say one is better than the other is a matter of your preference. I prefer JL or Morel , but you might prefer Focal or Hertz. All these speakers cost a lot of money so I suggest getting demos before you buy to everyone.
In case you were thinking of running two pairs of mid basses, just run them in parallel on a two ohm stable amp. The Mosconi One 250.2 would be outstanding for that.
Since you're good at audio and no good quality you should do a test build and use a Android tablet as a radio and see what it takes to get decent sounding audio
Shoegum At a local shop I did a direct comparison between three lines of Focal speakers and the difference in quality was huge as you went up the line. A lot comes down to preference.
@@jm-vq4cm in short, the Flax sounded good but K2 sounded great. I'm sure the Flax set would have sounded great in isolation, but hearing them side by side, the K2 sounded cleaner, clearer, and more natural to my ears. But then some people prefer the Flax sound. The models I demoed were PS165F and ES165K. I also demoed the Access set, 165A, which sounded quite poor compared to the others. I used to own the P30F subwoofer. It was a nice sub but the magnet broke off when someone crashed into my car. So I replaced it with the E30KX. The KX sounded much heavier, if you know what I mean. Thicker, fuller-sounding bass. And a hell of a lot louder. Maybe the Flax sub sounded a little more accurate. But I was also using a different source unit which definitely impacted the sound, so take that for what it is worth.

@@bbchester6 Yes. Sealed subs typically produce tighter sounding bass that blends well with the midbass. They don't require a subsonic filter either and can put out deeper bass. It puts a higher demand on the amplifier and can tolerate a little bass boost at low frequencies if that's your thing. Ported and bandpass are louder, go low enough for most music/people and can sound really good too.
I was always amazed at how loud and clear the K2 Power series would play. Many people would burn them up because they hardly have any audible distress from being pushed too hard.

Thoughts on mounting the tweeter near the woofer vs away (like you did on the A pillar)?
novemberromeo78 its because he is using a 3 way setup, the highs are up on the dash while the midbass can essentially be anywhere in the front as its not as directional as the highs.
@CAF Do you feel that focal makes better speakers than Memphis and JL Audio?
Find someone running these and listen to them. I never wanted to like them but have owned everything from Access in 2005 to K2 Power. There are other high end brands to consider also. Trust your ears and good luck!
They are a huge step up
Hi Mark , how do the Focal's sound , I'm currently running JL Audio and find there tweeters to be harsh sounding.
Jon
Jon,
I have worked with Focal since Boston Acoustic stoped producing car audio.
Which JL tweeters are you running? If you have dsp, have you tried try to eq them?
Morel...... LOVE my Morel Hybrids over any of the 4 sets of Focals I've owned from Polyglass to Flax.
@@TickleFingers Another VERY serious speaker company. Wish I heard more installs with these.
Have you done a stinger yet?
Здравствуйте. Подскажите где найти, купить корпус для СЧ и ВЧ?
Can zx400.1 can play p30f???
JL Audio needs to take Notes. Since they have 3way component speakers.
JL C7's are great speakers but have a higher price tag. These Focals fall between the C5 and C7 line.
You shoukd do a buget build get some skarr audio speakers and see what you get
esmokebaby I bought a little 4 Chanel amp from skar and only 3 of 4 Chanel’s worked I’d never buy anything from them again
@@lkjyuiop1987 damn it
Are these Focal's available in 8ohm's?
I don't believe so.
In case you were thinking of running two pairs of mid basses, just run them in parallel on a two ohm stable amp. The Mosconi One 250.2 would be outstanding for that.
Since you're good at audio and no good quality you should do a test build and use a Android tablet as a radio and see what it takes to get decent sounding audio
isobarik?
I can use those 3in mids how much do they cost
If you have to ask, you can't afford it
catch22frubert I like people like you because you don't know how deep my pocket are
what's the song you played in the car? I'd like to try it out
Its a royalty free song from the RUclips Audio library
What happen to the rockford sub?
You are thinking of the Wrangler, I am doing two Jeeps right now. The Wrangler is the loud build, the Grand Cherokee is the Sound Quality build.
@@CarAudioFabrication That Rockford sub is a beast! Good choice Mark.
Sorry i thought i missed something lol
🇧🇷 B R A.S.I.L !
Is there much difference between say $500 door speakers and $1200 dollar?
Shoegum At a local shop I did a direct comparison between three lines of Focal speakers and the difference in quality was huge as you went up the line. A lot comes down to preference.
@@Megawatt hi, what was your impression of the k2 vs flax line?
@@Megawatt thanks for taking time to give me this long, concise reply. I wanted to get the flax evo but got a great deal on the older 163KR yesterday so i bought them. I'm super excited now, waiting for delivery.
@@jm-vq4cm should be awesome. Enjoy!
are u based out of Texas
If so it has to be near the northern border because he has complained about the cold before & he has a heater in the shop.
I can't find anything about the any reviews on the SoCal six seven five or six and three-quarter inch integrated component speakers have you done anything on them or can you tell me more before I buy them
You mean you would buy them before focals???🙄
But flax and kevlar, will sound completely different..
Why a sealed enclosure?
He mentioned that he wanted to keep the enclosure as small as possible. It would only be two cubic feet for that pair of flax twelves.
@@johnclark3067And it's a geared more towards SQ I'm guessing.
First set is $2,400 😮
I want to know how you can afford a whole K2 set 😍😩
I bought my first set (165KRX2) discontinued for $600. An absolute steal! Definitely in the top 3 best car speakers I've ever heard.
Awesome speakers they sound soooo clear. Very awesome installer you do some of the best work I've ever seen BUT YOU'RE SO BORING Mark lol
I was always amazed at how loud and clear the K2 Power series would play. Many people would burn them up because they hardly have any audible distress from being pushed too hard.
I can't belive that is 2900 $
Kenneth Watso Where you getting that price from? £800 ($1k) here in the UK from Focal authorised resellers such as bass junkies.
IMO élite line it's ugly, i like more Expert line up
Super expensive
