It really wasn’t do y’all remember the technology themed one from a few years back or the Inbetween time one from like 2016 where maybe 10 ppl followed the theme…ngl there were many that were way worse…let’s not forget everyone hated camp when it first happened and suddenly now everyone loves it
@@kennyb1588 camp was the same as this year for me. Endless possibilities but the looks fell flat. The biggest risk we had was a hamburger costume. 😒 I wish it would go back to being a fashion event and not a celebrity red carpet.
It's so boring when no one follows the theme, majority of them showed up wearing whatever they wanted. Anyways Yara Shahidi did amazing, she looks gorgeous definitely slayed the theme. She looks the prettiest their.
I'm a little conflicted with the inspiration taken from Josephine Baker because Baker, though born in the US, was much more famous in the UK and for her work in France, especially. But I totally agree: Yara looked gorgeous in her outfit. I personally thought hers was the best this year.
Late to this party, but I agree In a perverse way, many of the failures did highlight the darker side of America/American fashion, right? - Ignore Native Americans - steal from POC without even an acknowledgement - claim you're the land of the free but be slaves to contracts (that force you into boring outfits and/or refuse you healthcare or maternity leave) - "it's expensive, and that's my inspiration" - as you said, the dismal, horrifying level of education : "this is an ode to an actress from the wrong continent, acting in a movie set in the wrong country, because I love the designer that didn't work on this film"... all of which is stuff you can find in Google's preview of the Wikipedia page
And the worst part is the Prom is SO American that someone / acouple should have come in a bold pastel 70s suit with a big boutonniere and a huge prom dress with a massive crown and sash but nobody had the vision 😩
Even still someone could have done an 80s prom look with overly teased-up hair and a short Basque waist dress. They could have done sororities and fraternities. I think Americans are the only ones that do that. They could have a lot of fun. It seems like the imagination is gone.
She's trying too hard to keep up to date and she's making it loose the classic/classy/exclusivity of it. Kanye convinces her to put Kim in and everything goes downhill from there... Kim & her fam shouldn't have been invited back then in the first place... Reality tv stars and influencers are not it!
Yeah. Some wore European outfits and I was like, how was this approved by Anna Wintour? If I'm a celebrity and was invited, I'd have a long history lesson on American fashion. It's also so disappointing when attendees copy another artist. Artists that are old (iconic but ypical of you to do that. Like Marilyn Monroe) "I'm wearing Chanel and um, that was my inspiration" Chanel is French.
It’s the way EVERY year people online come up with better outfit ideas for Met Gala themes. Like there were some good outfits but most are just…they could’ve done so much.
The theme was great!!! It feels like people are starting to treat it as if it's any red carpet... They're thinking of what they're gonna wear to look good in front of millions of people with no regard for the theme. What makes the Met Gala great is that you could look amazing but also be a failure if you don't follow the theme. If you are given a prompt for an essay it doesn't matter if you write the greatest short story ever. If it's not on topic you get a failing grade.
Us indigenous people have been asking the same question for decades, why are we not represented in media/politics. It’s our birthright. Congratulations Quannah Chasinghorse, you shine for all of us. I’m glad we are making strides.
@@vex2960 lol okay so just ignore that there are entire countries in Central and South America that are predominantly inhabited and historically originate from indigenous people. Not to mention North America, United States, Canada, and Alaska natives. Oh yeah also the entire world. Indigenous people are everywhere. Not sure why you say they don’t exist...
Because people are just scared of being accussed of cultural appropriation if native American style is incorporated ....but they are underrepresented when it comes to opportunity in terms of secular fashion
It's an absolute shame it was under represented because I've seen so many amazing designs from Native American designers. As for the appropriation concern, most of the native designers that I've asked about that very thing have said, "buy from Natives and give us credit."
@@greenecrayon exactly!!! I have some AMAZING native designed boots, (Manitoba mukluks, 100% recommend - super comfy and warm and even during Covid were delivered in a week after purchase) and several Native creators I follow promote them. My impression has been as long as you a: aren’t wearing native clothing or ceremonial garb as a “costume” (e.g. a native religious/ceremonial headdress or articles of dress for a “Indian” Halloween costume) and buy from and credit authentic designers, you’re good. Definitely not trying to speak for native folks and please correct me if I’m wrong, that’s just been my experience
Sadly I also think the fear of appropriation of your culture is real. Along with the fact that hollywood only pretends they care about minorities. In reality they just do the bare minimum to cover their asses.
Definitely the Native American model!!! The sad, actually outrageous, thing is that after watching tens of videos on the event, this is the first time I see her featured! So thank you for showing us
That big poufy dress was supposed to be a holiday Barbie? I mean, I guess, but it's so subdued and soft. I don't get a holiday feel, it's more spring-y. Micarah Tewers has set some high standards for me when comes to Holiday Barbie dresses.
yeah when i think holiday barbie i think of velvet, bows, gold/silver threading and trimming, and of course christmas red. i can appreciate what billie was going for but her dress looks nothing like a holiday barbie gown
There's an behind the scenes video on vogue about Billies dress design. Seemed to actually be inspired by old Hollywood stars fashion. There was no Hollywood Barbie images in the video as inspiration
It's so weird that as a non-american I had more ideas on what the outfits would be like I was expecting like a 50s or 60s inspired look or maybe like a southern belle kinda thing like in gone with the wind.
I think people making it more complicated than it is. I'm guessing people can't take a step back and take a look at what is visually a specifically American look because they're americans or americanized, who live in that very bubble, similar to how many people can't perceive current time's fashion and believe there is no specific look/trends atm. You can do victorian meets cowboy if cowboy is too literal. Those 2 eras did happen at the same time. You can be a glamorous Lady Liberty! This is so easy and effortlessly chic. How come no one thought of this? Make these your focal point or Incorporate any of these elements: Denim, Stars+Stripes, The American Color Scheme, Bandanna, Baseball(the quintessential retro american sport). You can apply that to the makeup, the details & accessories if an american outfit is too much for you, so idk a smeared star-shaped glittery eyeshadow or a necklace with stars wrapping around your neck, i think it sends a bold message that you got the stars choking you lol. People are making it unnecessarily hard. It's fashion, where is the creativity?
@@kennyb1588 and? they can be Americanized. You think it's impossible for a non-american to be americanized? And I'm not talking about the designers in that part, I'm talking generally about anyone who can't seem to think of any specifically american look and believe the theme is too vague & broad, so that applies to any nationality, whether that's american or not american.
50s and 60s would have been neat, although I wasn't surprised nobody did GWTW-inspired because, even though it's considered a classic in American film, it's largely becoming taboo to celebrate aspects of the Antebellum South in the US due to the racism and genocide the whole culture was built on.
@@NaNa-wy2tk the designers are responsible for the outfits so if you are talking about a lack of creativity in the outfits you are mainly talking about the designers not the celebrities. Most of the European designers aren’t Americanized they just didn’t try with the theme. Look at everyone who was dressed by YSL who just wore straight off the runway looks. Are you telling me all of his designs are Americanized now? Cause if that’s the case then I don’t want to hear anything anymore about how European fashion is superior since apparently everyone is just Americanized now… And no I don’t think you have to be from the U.S to be Americanized but I don’t think that’s a proper reason to explain why the looks weren’t good. They weren’t good because of a lack of effort not because of American centrism if anything if all the designers were completely Americanized the looks would have been a lot different..there would have been a lot more historical references and cowboy crap, American flags and what not but no that’s not what happened here. The theme was too vague and I am saying that because I feel as though when people have too much choice they choose nothing. I feel as though the same thing would have happened if the theme was Simply French Fashion or European fashion in general. There’s just so much to choose from and not enough guidelines tbh Like a lot of the brands at some point played a role in American fashion and it’s crazy to me that some of them literally couldn’t think of a single damn thing besides prom looks. But that’s my opinion of course e
With these theme they literally had so many things to choose. An ode to Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, american astronauts, cowboys, Broadway, Walt Disney, Dolly Parton, Elvis and Pricilla Presley, 1950s waitresses with their roller skates, WW2 nurses, american cartoons and superhero comics, disco, Rosie the riverter, uncle Sam, Dr. Seuss, Seattle grunge, football , even McDonald's cause there are just so many things that come from america. And if they wanted someone to KILL this theme they should've invited Lana del Rey period.
@Rebeca OMG! I was wondering where she was then after browsing the photos online. I realized what- where is she? Where is Taylor? Your comment needs to be at the top! If they had invited my sister's husband he would have arrived dressed in an Elvis-inspired outfit, he loves Elvis' music and his clothes. Plus, my brother in law makes his own clothes. Anna Wintour would have been in awe of him. Lol!
i’ve been so confused by how much praise kendall has gotten for her look considering how off-theme it is? like sure it’s a nice dress, but why is no one acknowledging the fact that audrey hepburn is not american lmfaoo
Exactly. Audrey was British, raised in Belgium and lived and acted in Europe for most of her life. Also a naked dress isn't very Audrey Hepburn, she didn't like showing off her body and said so in interviews.
There's no way Audrey Hepburn would dress like that. I think Kendal didn't even understand what she was talking about, just blabbering whatever people told her. As long as almost naked, that's the standard dress of The Kardashian.
bruh i didn’t make this comment so people could act all high and mighty about “classy vs trashy 🤪🤪”. this is just about how she went to an american-themed party dressed up as a british character played by british actress lmfao. like who gives a shit if she’s half naked, there are just so many more worthwhile things to criticize about both kendall and that dress lol
@@carla3585 I don't really give a shit she's almost naked, they always almost naked and naked anyway, so no suprise, it'll be suprise if she dare to take non sexy concept just like Audrey Hepburn dressed. I just don't understand why she really tried hard to tell it's Audrey Hepburn inspired, when it was clearly not. It doesn't even make sense. I blame her team.
The men had army camo, and a new style of suit that came out every past decade. They could go into their grandpa's house and grab something less boring than a modern tux. Image a 70s' suit made of brown corduroy and green accents. Or like a bowler hat with a cane. Most of them have been in movies with these cool outfits lol
I'm surprised nobody did a micheal jackson inspired look considering hes one of the most famous American entertainer in the world and still continues to make money till this day. 🤯 MTV's (racist) color barrier was broken by Michael Jackson's stardom; the network was essentially forced into playing "Billie Jean," which became a massive success and helped bolster the struggling network. He broke Racial Barriers and Opened doors for Artists of Color. I could list more achievements but it would take me a long time 🔥 Fun fact: Jackson made history when he became the first artist to win eight GRAMMYs in one night at the 26th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 28, 1984. The King of Pop's haul included Album Of The Year for Thriller and Record Of The Year for "Beat It." Jackson is among the artists with the most GRAMMYs won in the '80s with 11. And of course he invented the moonwalk and ran almost 2 decades of #1 hits. 🤯
People were saying that for the theme everyone should have worn Y2k. I wouldn't be mad if that happened. Now I hate Y2k. That's my least favorite fashion decade. For me that was the tackiest year for fashion. But you know what I want everyone to embrace their inner tackiness. That theme is specific enough for everyone to follow and there are many memorable looks to choose from.
@@TimeWasp Only the perfumes from Juicy had withstand the test of time. Now they're becoming popular again with their velvet sweat suit and bags. My first "designer" bag was a Juicy Couture bag. Even when the Juicy stores closed down in the States in the 2010's because they went bankrupt. IDK who still buys from the Juicy stores here in the Philippines.
im so glad someone finally pointed out her dress!! she may be an influencer, but I wish more people spoke about her dress and the weight of meaning as well as thought behind it because honestly it's so true to her and unique. also she isn't even American but I feel her homage actually made sense
I love how this Met Gala theme was essentially like an essay question set by a clever teacher who knows that most of their students only have a surface level knowledge and interest on the topic and will therefore fail to actually answer the essay requirements.
The only one that really wowed me was NikkiTutorials' outfit, especially since she referenced Marsha P. Johnson, the trans woman who threw the first brick at the Stonewall Riots. Not only did she tie her look into a major historical figure and event, but she chose a historical figure that meant something to her. The dress was stunning and she quite literally understood what was expected of her, while maintaining a somewhat uniqueness
Marsha P Johnson has repeatedly said she wasn't there at the start of the Riots, but yes she was very important in the community. A really good Podcast about it is You're Wrong About, i's titled Stonewall.
Thank you for actually doing an explanation at the beginning of what the met gala is and its significance. As a non-American it's just weird to watch other videos were they assume that everyone knows, and your summary was so helpful and thorough!
To think that the US is such a dominant culture (globally!) and yet most these designers could not even come up with a decent American pop culture reference is astounding….
If we're talking about pop culture, yes US is quite dominant globally, but not actual culture lol. The rest of the world doesn't consider USA a country with culture at all cus it's a fairly new one. Unless we're talking about native americans of course.
@@ivadervishi man... what about literally every single poc group in america. Especially African Americans and Mexican Americans. Like we have so much culture, were literally where hip hop, jazz, R&B, so much music, art, and clothing trends have come from. Especially American POC. America has such a rich culture when you actually look for it. But I guess I kinda get it. America is still seen as "white" so everything else gets brushed under the rug
@@eminempreg I never even knew what American culture is like. If I think about other countries especially Asian countries I can immediately think of clothes, music, dance, food etc. But for American culture all I can really think of is Halloween and pop music and denim. I guess it does have something to do with the whole "white" thing. But I also think that things in America like pop music, clothes, food have all been so globalised that it no longer even feels like culture anymore. When people think of culture they imagine their ancestors wearing big fancy costume like clothes like Indian gowns and Korean Hanboks. But for America people don't even really think it has a history. Anyone thinks of America they think of the present...it's like the country has no culture even though it probably does. (Outside of music)
with the celebrities you mention, seems like the non-americans understood the theme more than the american celebrities. Which actually sometimes reflect how other nationalities can pinpoint what is “american” from an outsider pov, vs Americans thinking everything is related to America.
Well it wasn't as bad as the year they made the Theme "punk/grunge" and here comes Gwyneth Paltrow wearing a fancy pink dress like she is Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. I personally think that they should be penalized for breaking the theme and maybe have an award for the best outfit that matches the theme. Something to get away from this sheer laziness. Also that horse head was so gauche and while technically matching the theme, didn't do it well.
a reverse hunger games ! If you're going to be stinking rich & waste money on frivolities like fancy dresses for the Met Gala, you CANNOT be boring... because if you are, Anna Wintour will feed you to her dalmations 🤭
Chasinghorse... was absolutely stunning and it is an absolute shame that more people did not support indigenous fashion how can you get more American than that
I think the Met is also losing some of its cache with them inviting just anyone like Addison Rae ? Really? Half the people didn’t even know or cared what they wore
??? Isn't it supposed to be about the fashion? Why are you acting like some dumb celebrity models have some kind of higher intrinsic value than other dumb celebrity models? You sound like you're really into weird exclusionary hierarchies, and you should probably reevaluate that.
As much as I love rose, they literally have her an off the rack black dress, and tied it with a bow to give it... a bit of a kick. But she really faded into the background.
since she went as a ysl person (representative? ambassador?) they styled her in a ysl dress that’s she’s already worn (on a magazine cover) i just wish they dressed her in something more eye catching or something that actually fit the theme😞
I think that's the point. They wanted the younger influencers to wear designs that young people could potentially buy, since obviously there's not really a point in showing off some 20k designer dress to literal 15 year olds. I think that's also why they all looked so boring -- because they wanted it to be something people could easily see *themselves* wearing. I agree though, it was super boring, and they did them really dirty by not at least styling them better.
Kaia Gerber should've worn one of her mother's looks. If your mum is a famous American super model from the 80s 90s and the theme is this you need to use that.
But she has to keep stoking the fire of lies that "my mom had nothing to do with it! I worked JUST AS HARD. . heck . .I worked HARDER than people from no-name families!" like Kendall Jenner claims every chance she gets.
@@koolaidman6251 She has said multiple times that her mother trained and coached her on modeling. She simply used that expertise to make a platform. She's payed homage to her mother multiple times on the red carpet and in photoshoots. Don't be bitter.

With her exchange muted for the video narration, I did a triple take to determine if it was Cindy or Kia. The filming perspective seemed to emphasize not only physicalities, but how similar they are in poise, grace and movements in expression.
I'm so surprised no one thought of referencing a flapper with makeup that paid homage to the beginning of Hollywood. That style revolutionized fashion and was a bold feminist statement. Even a 1950s inspired poodle skirt would have been amazing to. Rosie the riveter would have been another look that would have had a strong feminist message.
Nvm I searched it up dam. So its European history 💀 'The term flapper originated in Great Britain, where there was a short fad among young women to wear rubber galoshes (an overshoe worn in the rain or snow) left open to flap when they walked. The name stuck, and throughout the United States and Europe flapper was the name given to liberated young women.'
I was disappointed by the lack of Barbie looks especially since the ones, like Billie Eilish, completely failed to read as Barbie. I was talking about the theme with a friend and we thought it would've been fun if someone had dressed in an original Barbie look like the Chevron swimsuit, or an iconically American Barbie look like pop art Barbie.
@@margaritavlacci I thought she was going for the Marilyn Monroe look? Did you watch the video of her getting ready? I'm just curious to why everyone is saying barbie.
No one does tone-deaf and hypocrisy quite like celebrities do. I think everyone is getting fed up with companies and organizations capitalizing on real calls for change, all the while stomping on minority representation.
I think we're also getting super annoyed to see firsthand that the ultra-wealthy did NOT get there through hard work or talent. There's teenagers on tiktok who can do far better for probably not even 1/10th the cost.
I'm so glad you talked abt Quannah Chasinghorse and the way indigenous cultures ESPECIALLY should've been included in this year's theme. I've hardly seen anyone mention that or her
i saw someone on tiktok try to compliment her, only for some person trying to tell anyone who commented that the turquoise was probably fake and cheap. like literally someone would compliment her makeup and that person would show up
@@laurelleaves not only is that probably offensive since i believe there's strong cultural reasons behind the turquoise, but besides that, who cares if it's fake/cheap?? that's such a classist statement, as if something HAS to be expensive in order to be viewed as beautiful or art
It probably would have been seen as racist. There’s many times when people try to celebrate or embrace other cultures only for Twitter to say it’s racist
Tbh if it was actually on purpose it would have represented America perfectly BC America is to young to have a set cultural identity and the natives who were here first aren’t actually American they belong to the tribe that are their own. They aren’t Native American they’re navajo or Cherokee or any other tribe they belong to. It’s just sad that so many people got sponsernd to go because they didn’t have right to creativity. Hopefully we’ll see more creative looks in may.
Unrelated to the met gala but related to Kendall Jenner's dress: does anyone else think it would look way better if there was a layer of opaque navy blue fabric under the transparent crystal layer? I feel like it'd be like looking at a beautiful night sky full of stars. Edit: I just realized that if someone did my idea with multiple colors of crystals instead of just white ones the dress would look a little like fireworks on the 4th of July, and I feel a bit disappointed that nobody went that route for the met gala.
@RuminationStation Yeah, I can name plenty of RUclips and tik-tok designers that would be perfect for this. Hell, someone made a dress out of Loofas (bath sponges) and made it look good
It’s INCREDIBLY telling that these brands sponsor influencers with very young followers. It implants the seeds within these young followers to aspire to become wealthy enough to afford/support the brands, allowing them to create an entirely new generation of interest while skating around the regulations surrounding child advertising.
But these influencers are wearing designer. In Addison and Dixie's case their dresses are so bad. There's nothing wrong with young people taking an interest in fashion or designers. Even if they can't afford it you can still appreciate it. But these dresses are so bad I don't see anyone younger who actually likes their dresses. Also these influencers were invited for the sake that they're famous. This was more for the event to get clout. And they didn't get the clout they exactly wanted. I like influencers but they don't belong to the Met Gala.
Yeah the fact that the Met Gala is started inviting people who call themselves influencers just lowered the standards even more. But they probably lowered that standard when they started letting the Kardashians arrive. The Met Gala should be exclusive now just anybody can show up and show up in really wack ass costumes an call it fashion... ocasio-cortez I think had the best dress among others
Kendall is just too afraid to be called „ugly“. She‘s always on safety road, such as madison beer. They always dress in a way every person that is not into Fashion would also find beautiful, which is fine, but also never results in iconic significant fashion moments. Kim on the other hand enjoys taking risks, but maybe it‘s because her public persona is different than kendalls. Kendall just wants to be that stunning Supermodel.
I’m honestly surprised no one did the obvious thing and dressed like famous historical figures or pop culture icons. You’re telling me in the worlds biggest American themed party no one wore a dazzling Elvis outfit or Abraham Lincoln outfit. Yes, Sadly I feel that Ms. Wintour has clearly been bought when it comes to whom she invites and allows to Attend the MET Gala. Almost directly linked to her putting Kim Kardashian in Vogue Magazine, signalling Profit , money and bought success over Skill , merit and class. I get that The MET ball is ultimately a fundraiser, but the exclusive allure of the event has been diluted to just any other celebrity event. Wintour could have at least done a better job of inviting a more diverse group pf attendees, especially of Native American heritage, considering the nights theme.
@@friv_0881 I totally agree. God - until I finally broke down and allowed myself to go on social media, I'd never heard of a 'Kardashian'. And I've yet to figure out just what it is they do. As you so well put it - money and bought success over skill, merit, or class. And the clothes evoked very little in the way of expressing much to do with either American history, its People, or its fashion. The fact that it has just become a rich celebrity 'thing' sort of flies in the whole face of the object of the fundraising - to keep the Met open and free to all.
I love the idea of a themed party and that's what MET kinda feels like a prom for celebrities. It would be great if they went completely creative with the themes such as mythical creatures, Greek mythology, horror, ethereal, gothic etc would be soooo good and fun to see be interpreted by designers
They do.. this is just one theme of many that they do and have done...have you even looked at the history of the met gala?? Like legit not just watched this biased report on it. ...
I find things have to be somewhat broad with this type of thing because not everyone can pull of, or is into, the same styles. Like not everyone is into horror or would feel comfortable with it, and mythology with a specific place in mind can easily border on appropriation or stereotypes. It's not a costume party, although a celebrity costume party would be fun.
LOL I understand what you’re saying but they don’t “pick” the theme per say. It’s based directly off what that year/season’s costume institute is displaying. Since the current Met costume institute is based on American fashion, that’s what the theme was pulled from. Same with heavenly bodies. They already had a Catholic themed exhibit set to to open at the Met so the 2018 gala had to be based on that.
I feel like this year the divide between great outfits and bad was SEVERE. There were some great pieces, but great pieces that fit the theme were few and far between :/
The only one person that I found going with the theme was CL, LET ME START OFF! She wore denim cloth/fabric and If we're gonna look at one of America's biggest brands which is Calvin Klein, they specialize in denim jeans and white shirts, it's their iconic look. Miss girl CL managed to pull off with her white bottoms and the denim coat/dress which relates to one of the most iconic American fashion. I don't understand why she's not getting attention for it and her hairstyle sparks her identity being a Korean. I literally SALUTE the designer cause it's SO SIMPLE and yet SO ELEGANT.

I totally agree- most of the looks were such a disappointment. I like how you highlighted the ways in which attendees could have gone with their outfit inspiration! I was really disappointed in the lack of First Ladies references. There are a good number of iconic looks by a few different First Ladies that would have looked so cool with a modern update. There’s this rose dress Mary Todd Lincoln wore that was made by Elizabeth Keckley which would have been such an awesome American fashion reference. The missed opportunities
I LOVED Ciara’s look the Jersey dress with her husband number (a football player) and she wore his Super Bowl ring and the football clutch really pulled the whole look together like what’s more American than football she really nailed it and somehow pulled off that color IMAN look also reminded me of a beautiful gold firecracker (Americans favorite way to celebrate)
She absolutely understood the theme! American football is such an iconic staple of USA culture- it reminded me of Elton John's rhinestone baseball costume!
I thought I was the only one who thought Kendalls dress was very "Been there, done that". It's beautiful, but how many times have we seen a nude illusion dress with sparkles?
I’m also mad about how many art references that could have been made. Warhol, Lichtenstein, basquiat, rauschenberg, Keith harring, Sam Gilliam and so many more.
Tbh! Considering it's the /Met/ Gala, that would've been amazing. I would've desperately loved to see an interpretation of one of Thomas Cole's works or the American Romantic movement in general.

Many of them went to incredible schools and took classes in the history of design and art history. Beyond that they freaking live in New York, with access to mountains of American art history. Not sure there's an excuse there
Indigenous designers do not have $35,000 to buy seats for celebrities. They also don’t have the resources to work with them for several weeks to make a new dress with expenses out of pocket.
@@nycapple917 Another question comes to my mind in that case. Why can’t a rich celebrity buy the seat and then get a suggestion by Anna to sponsor Indigenous designs? Why does it have to be the other way around? Truly just curious.
@@cailynnn I was asking myself the exact same thing while writing that out. With 30,000 dollar seat. Wintour could have waived the fee, or sponsored it. Or find someone to sponsor or even the luxury designers themselves can come together and sponsor a few seats. Then, the celebrity can actually pay for the service of the indigenous designers. They can surely afford it. But I’ve worked with multi-millionaires and they truly do not live in this universe. They live in a different reality that is just about themselves. They know of nothing else. They have different thought processes from the rest of us.

Nikkie's dress literally made me cry. I am amazed by her braveness and the way she's been embracing her identity and it is INCREDIBLE how she payed homage to one of America's most incredible people in history. That's how you make a political statement.
Omg as soon as you said it it clicked that it is a political statement But not with words, or cloche frases Wich is even more amazing I cried too when she talked about it on tw and that's how powerful it is while still being a good look
Looks that could have been served instead of whatever hot mess showed up: 1. Imagine a sari inspired by the Statue of Liberty 2. A look inspired by Lady Justice, a figure that appears on the emblem of countless US courthouses and legal departments. A super easy look if you were adamant about looking "pretty". 3. We could have had a look inspired by 18th-century American fashion. This year's Met Gala featured no powdered wigs, tricorn hats, bedgowns or robe à la françaises. I think Lili Reinhart's dress was a great idea but had okay execution. It would have benefitted from a robe à la française shiloutte. 4. Madison Beer should have done a recreation of a Jane Fonda look. Her makeup and hair at the Met Gala was a dead-on recreation of Fonda in the early 60s. Huge missed opportunity. 5. A recreation of any of the looks worn by pioneering Chinese-American actress, Anna May Wong. Not only are like 75% of them Met Gala worthy, but it would also bring light to an actress whose career was stifled by racism. Bonus: her career woes are still relevant these days. 6. A recreation/look inspired by Brittany Spears and Justin Timberlake's double denim look at the 2001 AMA's. Imagine Camilla Cabello and Shawn Mendes doing this! 7. A recreation of a Claire McCardell evening gown, a super important American fashion designer and a revolutionary figure in American sportswear. She was literally the first designer mentioned in the Vogue video Hamish Bowles did on this year's Met Gala theme. Why no one watched the video before they went to the Met Gala is beyond me. 8. Give us 1930-50s glam with a Mainboucher look. If you want to be controversial or iconic, do a recreation of Wallis Simpson's wedding dress to King Edward VII!. The dress is literally at the Met so you have no excuse. 9. Do a look inspired by '60's space-age, complete with plastic textiles and clear baubles. Even the look is mostly associated with European designers such as Pierre Cardin or Andre Courrèges, you can use NASA logos and Courrèges was invited by NASA because of his interest in space travel. 10. For all the boring men who still wanted to wear suits, they could have paid homage to early American cinema (early talkies or silent films) by choosing to recreate the look of leading men such as Rudolph Valentino, John Gilbert, Sessue Hayakawa or Ramon Novarro.
Omg, you're brilliant. Lady Justice would have killed it. A beautiful gold/bronze clinging dress with some weighing scales incorporated into the jewelry 🤔
Gemma Chan's dress and styling were actually inspired by Anna May Wong! The dress was designed by Nepalese-American designer Prabal Gurung. They did a great job of paying homage while bringing the design into modernity
@@may.k_me A lot of the clothes that featured in 18th-century American fashion had their origins in Europe. I just think that they could have really taken advantage of the loose theme and took inspiration from other centuries.
If celebrities who wanted to make a statement actually make a statement, they definitely could have chosen Indigenous designers for the whole world to see and recognize, but I guess they weren't ready for that.
I think for celebrities they have very little choice you get invited by a brand. I feel like it was the management who should have brought in more natives brands especially to collaborate with native models like quannah chasinghorses’ dress
celebs typically get spoon-fed as their looks are heavily controlled by designers and large companies. They all definitely could of at least voiced that but i expect very little from that crowd when it comes to social issues
But i feel like if non-indigenous celebrities wore indigenous outfits they'd be called out for cultural appropriation even if it really was appreciation
Celebrities don't have much control over what they wear, it's upto the designers. If they would say something, they would be risking their chance of going to the met - which most of them would play rather safe.
I was kind of excited for Rose but was disappointed. Not her fault, if YSL made her an ambassador and gave her a seat they should have worked with her. Her styling in MVs are better than this. Rose needs to get an invite directly from Vogue and then she can have her own team because honestly she deserves more than just a dress that looks like it is more appropriate for an afterparty than the gala.
Ngl all of the saint Laurent looks were boring this year and they have so many interesting looks they could have pulled from to fit the theme even from this years runaway alone
Amen!!! I still do not fully understand those how think that she was perfect in that dress, I mean have you seen the lots of looks she has accomplished throughout the years that were all better and more suited for the occasion that what she ended up wearing at the Gala??? I hope this is not YSL starting to neglect their ambassadors as other fashion houses (Ejem Ejem Chanel)
Most of the ppl YSL dressed this year weren't really outstanding...out of them all only hailey was a bit better than average or else no one was that outstanding
Grimes had my favorite look. Her look was based on an American novel called Dune. Even if people don’t think her look fit the theme, she absolutely killed. I also loved Chasing Horse’s look. There definitely needs to be more representation of indigenous people at events like this. And I feel like a lot of people could’ve done more political looks or looks representing civil rights that aren’t performative, honestly. That shit in America goes deep so it sucks that there wasn’t more of it that could be genuine and not for show. Elliot Page’s look was simple but had a deep meaning for queer representation. Niki tutorials was great. Billie Eilish also looked beautiful.
I agree with you on Grimes. However not on Billie Eilish. I felt her hair was messy and not in a good way, and the bodice of her dress didn't actually fit her. Turns out its bc the people dressing her didn't realize they couldn't just take a sample size out for a non model body and force it to work on a person who is not model sized. Billie's dress literally gave her back fat. I was very annoyed. Aside from the color it doesn't do for her what her dress should have.

All of this talk is just another reminder to me just how 'out of touch' Hollywood and other Elite are with America in general. This should have been one of the EASIEST themes to do, yet to see so many fail just getting it . . . . it's sad. For me I would have been inspired by Robert Redford's film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which is an American classic. I may not like the story, but I loved the fashion of it with the 1920s theme. Boom, right there, easy as pie. Or, I would have been inspired by local stuff. Even though I am NOT Hispanic, I would have been inspired by something Selena wore. She's cherished here in South Texas and did create her own clothing line while she was alive.

Your honesty is so refreshing. I felt the same way, the theme was too broad and most people just missed. I especially love your suggestions at the end.
i think the issue is that americans think everything revolves around them, so they think pretty much anything is on theme. like referencing audrey hepburn and other non-americans because they are known as "american icons" when in reality they are global icons
Not exactly. As an American I understand America as being a melting pot for so many different cultures and ideas. As for the theme I think independence to me can mean something very different to my neighbor. We each come from so many different backgrounds from European, Latin America, Asia, India and many more. It's kind of confusing to say what is truly "American". My heritage is pretty much what I say it is because I've been exposed to a "global heritage" so to speak.

This made me so mad. There was so much they could have done! My mind went straight to the 1930's and 40's flour sack dresses. Fabric was scarce so people made clothes from flour sacks, when the flour companies picked up on this they began to print patterns on their flour sacks.
So many missed opportunities with this theme. I totally would've done something like a look inspired by Carrie at prom. One that film is an American pop culture classic and two, a reference to prom. As a non-american, it seems like the US puts such a significance on prom night during the high school experience, it would've been a cool way to tie everything together.

I was surprised to not see more street wear/90's hip hop wear. I did think Ri-Ri's interpretation was great. And ASAP Rocky with grandma's quilt was great throwback to the arts and crafts movement. But why didn't Tommy Hilfiger not have his fingers all over this theme?
It's disappointing that many fashion enthusiasts are narrow minded about the theme. It reminds me that people think fashion & fashion design is only about looking pretty, not about art/creativity.

50s and 60s would have been neat, although I wasn't surprised nobody did GWTW-inspired because, even though it's considered a classic in American film, it's largely becoming taboo to celebrate aspects of the Antebellum South in the US due to the racism and genocide the whole culture was built on.

Are you telling me all of his designs are Americanized now? And no I don’t think you have to be from the U.S to be Americanized but I don’t think that’s a proper reason to explain why the looks weren’t good.

He broke Racial Barriers and Opened doors for Artists of Color. I could list more achievements but it would take me a long time 🔥
Fun fact:
Jackson made history when he became the first artist to win eight GRAMMYs in one night at the 26th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 28, 1984. The King of Pop's haul included Album Of The Year for Thriller and Record Of The Year for "Beat It." Jackson is among the artists with the most GRAMMYs won in the '80s with 11. And of course he invented the moonwalk and ran almost 2 decades of #1 hits.

To think that the US is such a dominant culture (globally!) and yet most these designers could not even come up with a decent American pop culture reference is astounding….
Because most europeans think of the US as the country without culture, since 120 years can't really be called tradition.

I kind of want to see Rose in something that wasn’t a mini skirt or a short dress… so many opportunities missed…
since she went as a ysl person (representative? ambassador?) they styled her in a ysl dress that’s she’s already worn (on a magazine cover) i just wish they dressed her in something more eye catching or something that actually fit the theme😞

Unrelated to the met gala but related to Kendall Jenner's dress: does anyone else think it would look way better if there was a layer of opaque navy blue fabric under the transparent crystal layer? I feel like it'd be like looking at a beautiful night sky full of stars.

I find things have to be somewhat broad with this type of thing because not everyone can pull of, or is into, the same styles.
Referencing the past is definitely Hollywood's latest marketing technique. The sheer influx of movie remakes is one marker of this.
Movie remakes have been done forever. And they keep getting made and are now more popular than ever sin free age of movie stars is over. CL deserves to be talked about too xp such a queen who imo successfully conveyed the American theme AND her Korean roots. so proud as a Korean.
CL is an absolute QUEEN
Ikr i was waiting for her to comment on it
Agreed
agreed, i've seen basically no one talk about her look and i personally think she did an amazing job
Don’t forget that rosè was there to
Nikkie's dress literally made me cry. I am amazed by her braveness and the way she's been embracing her identity and it is INCREDIBLE how she payed homage to one of America's most incredible people in history. That's how you make a political statement.
Omg as soon as you said it it clicked that it is a political statement
But not with words, or cloche frases
Wich is even more amazing
I cried too when she talked about it on tw and that's how powerful it is while still being a good look
I absolutely loved the outfit
These designers are so stuck inside their own heads trying to “make a statement” that they forget to make the clothes look good.
Looks that could have been served instead of whatever hot mess showed up:
1. Imagine a sari inspired by the Statue of Liberty
@@pattsterzz I don't know how I forgot about Gemma Chan's look! It was gorgeous and I love how she committed to the look via the hair and makeup.
Answering to number 3- most of what you mentioned are all fashion from Europe. So that really doesn't fit in with the theme
Lewis Hamilton for example payed for a table and invited black emerging designers, other celebrities could've easily done something similar
Agree
They had her in the same dress and choker she had worn previously for a shoot i was miffed!!
@@victoriadiesattheend.8478 Wasn't she the one who basically said "I'll wear whatever dress you want if you donate to this charity" and that's why she wore something so unlike her?
DUNE IS SO GOOD
Or when the K-POP singer CL from 2ne1 portrayed a better American Independence theme than the actual Americans, she rocked a jean cardigan with a train, looking flawless.
Not only that she also infused her own identity as a Korean to it by wearing a hairstyle that queens wore in their country.
@@mahimaperiwal5866 EXACTLY.
That's another proof that CL is a very smart artist.
PREEEEEACH!
she looks good but the fact that it's alexander wang🤢🤢🤢🤢
100th like
@Failingpepper 11 Yeah, me neither.
The theme was post war so the 20s dont make sense to do
@@seangt Oh, okay, that's fine, but that's still plenty to cover. Like I did mention Selena and she gain popularity in the early 90s before her tragic death in 1995.
The theme was so broad and had enough potential for people to really get creative but instead it was like prom and wedding wear 😞
I mean I thought it was a perfect representation of America ... tacky, overhyped, disorganized, attendees who were self serving with their fashion choices with no regard to the theme and ultimately disappointing 🤷🏽♀️
well when you put it like that, the collective nailed it
Ah....now it makes sense😏
Everyone loves to talk shit about America, yet everything you watch and listen to is from America.
@@rpl2108 because other countries don't have any media. actors, singers, movies are only from america lmao. besides it's not about the media but about the history, the people and the government are what people criticise and they have every right to.
@@faefindingawilltolive Ok, but don't get all butt hurt and cry when we fire back twice as strong and criticize your country.
The problem, it felt like a plain old red carpet event with vague references attached. Only 30-40% of the look made me think ooh America. Still confused as to why no one did a Pop art, Coca Cola, Dieselpunk, Art Deco or Nouveau or even a McDonalds inspired look. I literally sat in front of my screen, and had to remind myself what was the 'Theme'?
Heck, someone could have even tried a look inspired by Andy Warhol. I think Katy Perry's burger outfit would've been perfect for this theme.
This is the actual representation of what América is at the moment
And it is not good.
A mess.

Nothing wrong with european designers but at least they could've stick to the theme, and I was apalled by the lack of American designers :/
Well Italians and French created high fashion, so it's normal thar they are very required
Same! American designers should’ve been much more present for this one, even newer up and coming ones.
"American Fashion"
let's wear a friggin horse...
Your honesty is so refreshing. I felt the same way, the theme was too broad and most people just missed. I especially love your suggestions at the end.
Why is ‘China through the looking glass’ so well done but ‘American independence’ so bleh? It doesn’t make sense aren’t most of you American? 😭
i think the issue is that americans think everything revolves around them, so they think pretty much anything is on theme. like referencing audrey hepburn and other non-americans because they are known as "american icons" when in reality they are global icons
Most. Of.the outfit just stayed in 19s I know it's about independence but I was. Really. Hoping I would see celebities showing America's culture.. Anyways Nicki tutorials was it!! She did beautiful
You need a theme that's has a lot of possibilities but it's still limited, 2017 and 2018 are a good example. If they had come with a theme called American cinema or American wild West it would have been better.
It goes to show that Americans themselves don’t even know what America’s identity is. I don’t even know 🥲
Too many cultures to stick to one. But American usually means bold, daring, and innovative(not to be mixed with creative).
America is just Europe without culture.
@@flan6449 thats not true at all, that’s USA. America is a continent, and México is part of it, as well as a lot of many other countries that are rich in culture. and i’m proud to say, even we were attacked and colonized by Spain, México still preserves it’s culture and folclore we are so in touch with our ancestors traditions. We know who we are.
@Guess what culture does the US have ?
It is often more difficult to pin point what your own culture is unless someone has tried to take it from you.
I definitely loved Nikkie de Jager’s look, and Lupita Nyong’o immediately struck me as on point.
I’m kinda Disappointed you didn’t mentioned Jeremy Pope paying tribute to cotton slavery & CL’s tribute to denim & white underwear with her korean twist
“(Kim’s attire was) very fitting with the theme which was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. Why? Because Kim herself is the epitome of American culture; famous for being famous. She didn't have to wear 'anything' because she is recognisable no matter what she wears. Very clever.” From High Fashion Talk on Facebook.
I saw one girl note that her outfit really showcased her silhouette, and her figure has become the standard for women especially in America. I thought the blankness of her look is a lot more clever than majority of the outfits that were just "Oh, this is an American designer!"
I didnt even recognize her at first so im not entirely sure if she's recognisable "no matter what she wears" but, to be fair when i finally realized it was her i thought it was on brand
@@julien4305 right people r like “it’s so obv it’s kim’s silhouette” but like sis so many celebs have that body now how tf am i supposed to recognize it’s her 😭

I heard someone mention a "shadow" and I thought oh wow she is trying to show that America is built on the people in the background who do all the work but don't get credit or recognition bc they are in the shadows... I was wrong.
I generally hate mermaid dresses, but Nikki killed it and definitely had one of the best-thought-out outfits of the evening

Now knowing the significance I think Quannah Chasinghorse, Yara Shahidi, Lupita Nyongo, Nikkie Tutorials and Emily Blunt’s looks were my faves. Too bad they didn’t get the recognition they deserved :(
Quannah Chasinghorse had the best met gala look and I’ve only seen her mentioned briefly. It’s so upsetting, she fit the theme and understood the assignment and isn’t getting the recognition she deserves.
@@alexandriageiler687 Exactly! I’ve been watching a lot of Met Gala Outfit reviews and she was only mentioned twice. :((
This made me so mad.
As a non-american, it seems like the US puts such a significance on prom night during the high school experience, it would've been a cool way to tie everything together.
this theme could've been so perfect for Olivia Rodrigo and it goes with her album aesthetic

I'm biased as an F1 fan, but I thought Lewis' decision to bring young black designers with him to his table was such a lovely non performative gesture!
Yess he's the only one who actually did something meaningful! I wish more people were talking about it
And his outfit was good too- western, but with a twist.
And this only a day or two after Max Verstappen left his car on Lewis’ head! Thank goodness for the halo! It’s saved so many lives already. Lewis wouldn’t have survived that crash otherwise.
I am biased as a F1 fan and tired of Lewis a bit lol. I might appreciate him more after he retires, same happened for me and Schumacher, I was so annoyed with his domination that was just sick of him but now I miss him :(
I was surprised to not see more street wear/90's hip hop wear.
I’m so glad you mentioned Ciara’s dress. I thought she was one of the better dressed with camp meats iconic America. But thank you for the last bit about native indigenous design. Chefs kiss

From the lack of guests with substantive caliber, the off-theme outfits, and the lackluster (semi-idiotic) red carpet interviews. Never the same without Andre Leon Talley.

100% everything about this. So many missed opportunities with the theme they were give could have taken it literally anywhere!
I wish Megan Fox said her look was inspired by Bettie Page, an American pin up model (THEEE pin up girl), but she didn’t.
I am obsessed with CLs denim look and how it was still very pointedly Korean in design and styling. Made in Korea is a big slogan for her and artists and creators close to her so I appreciated her sliding into the theme while still staying true to her roots. One of my faves of the night! Also really loved Ciaras despite seeing it get clowned on twitter lol so many missed opportunities mentioned here. Kinda hoping for the best next year since they are redoing the theme.
CL UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT
This year's event was so bad I initially wondered if it would be the the last one. I appreciate your commentary!
Yeah especially since they just started letting anybody in. When you start letting little RUclipsrs and people like the Kardashians and of course no longer an exclusive event they let the riff raff in
CL did her homework tho. She outshined many according to me.
