Fun Fact! The stetson (AKA, the cowboy hat you're thinking about) was actually popularized really late in the wild west period. For most of it the most popular hat was the fecking BOWLER HAT.
Bowler hat was mostly a city hat. Cowboy hats were used for a way longer time. Of course they weren’t shaped as in 20th century sharp Hollywood style. They were big, floppy, and foldable for versatile protection from the sun and weather. There are ton of photos and resources about it.
