I've just aquired a windmill heidelberg - i've run H. cylinder presses too but the windmill is my favourite. I'm the printer in my own letterpress school here in NZ. I've got the windmill, 3 ARAB treadle platens, a Furnival treadle platen and a older cylinder press. Oh, and an Intertype, Elrod linecaster and a Ludlow. Im keeping letterpress alive and passing on my skills and knowledge.

Loved the old ARAB, learnt to use one when I was 12 years old, I had to stand on a stool to reach into the platen lol, would not be allowed to do that today. I had to print thousands of pill packets for a pharmaceutical company, their small size and close to the edge printing could not be put on the Heidelberg. The money the printer gave me was pretty cool for a school boy. I remember his warning " For goodness sake don't get your hand caught in the platen as there's tons of pressure". He really wanted me to treadle the machine which was too awkward so we ran the machine on the electric motor. There was another machine alongside, I think it was called a Cropper. When I was in the Royal Navy I visited Singapore and while walking down a street I heard the familiar sound of a hand fed platen, I asked if I could have a go and the owner was reluctant to let me take over, but I did for a while much to everyone's amazement. Happy Memories, I never forgot how to feed the machine.

You should be putting in the correct packing before starting to print - with the impression backed off and slowly brought up to kiss the stock. The description of adjusting the feed and the pile height is not the best way to do it. Also twisting the feed to get register is not the best of ideas as it alters the amount of stock held by the grippers and can lead to feed problems, it's best to start with a plate in the correct alignment. This platen may have wear on the bed but a well maintained machine should have even impression over the entire bed if the packing is correct - it is after all not a clam shell platen; it is a toggle action.

Takes me back to the 1970's when I ran these, In the UK they were known as Heidelberg Platens. I worked with a chap who had a scar on his forehead where the windmill had caught him at high speed..

I've been in printing for 90% of my working (40) years and have recently convinced my shop owners to set up the H. Windmill that's been in storage for several years. Cleaning, oil & greasing is being completed and some minor repairs are being done. I am reluctant to get the power to it until they find (or buy) manuals (operation and/or parts) to use as reference. They also have (2) H. Cylinder presses I currently run (without manuals also). All of these 3 machines are dedicated to Die-cutting.... not inking up to print. I do not like running these machines without manuals and have not had much luck locating any. It's been a long time since I've run a Windmill and do not want to cause any damage. These youtube videos are helpful but are no substitute for a manual. Any source suggestions out there? Heidelberg is a big "no help" on this.
