- In this video I unbox and give my first impressions of the nickel Killarney Whsitles in the keys of C, D and Eb. This tin whistle review covers the packaging methods, delivery times, build quality, sound, ease of playing and caring for Killarney Whistles and gives you an idea of what to expect when you buy. I will be making a full review with my opinions of these whistles in a few weeks when I've learned to play them properly :) but I hope you enjoy seeing them straight out of the packet!

Just bought a brass Killarney while in Dublin 6 days ago. I really love how it has a softer tone without sacrificing any volume.
When you only have a Clark Sweetone in D and watch videos about other cool whistles with envy 😂

I got my first C whistle a month ago and you're definitely right about each whistle being different. I'm still not fully used to this new whistle but it will happen in time (also it has a tuning slide and I'm fully nerding over it :D)
Looking forward to your full review. I've been looking for a truly musical high D whistle that plays clearly on all notes bottom to top, with proper tuning, with a similar volume, with low windiness, no breaking apart of the sound, and great tone. I find a lot of better whistles lean towards having a rounded recorder-like tone but I already have quality soprano and tenor recorders. The Killarney retains the whistle tonal character, with a nice musical tone, and seems to get through the upper second octave and into the third smoothly. Please run it through it's full range and let us know what you experience. I've seen maybe 15 RUclips videos of it, and far more of other whistles. There are about 5 other models I like in this range and want to decide very soon on a purchase of something. But I think I've decided that the instrument has to be metal. Cheers!
Recently received a set of Setanta whistles from McNeela Music, brass finish in Eb, D and C using one head and 3 interchangeable bodies. Curiously the C body is the same diameter as the other 2 and they are also heavier at the head. The head looks almost identical to the Kilarney whistle I was considering. The sound is very bright and does require a bit more push than my Chris Wall D sweet whistle (also one of my favorites) and sounds very similar to the Kilarney whistles you demonstrated.
Concerning C whistles, I just received a C whistle from Roy McManus made of Newtonia wood, beautiful craftsmanship, but more importantly, was amazed at the sound and consistancy of tone through both octaves and ease of playing, especially suttle ornamentations. If you get a chance to try one, I think it would change your impression of C whistles.

Good review. I've been using a Killarney D whistle for the past couple of years in my band and have really enjoyed it. The tone is bright, clear, responsive. I chose the yellow brass version which comes unlacquered; so, it does tarnish but I simply polish it before each gig and it brightens up beautifully. It's expensive but worth it if you intend to play it much.
I may be an outlier, but I like the look of shiny finger holes and a tarnished whistle body. It means the whistle is being played! Those Killarney whistles look really well built.
I don't mind it on my Sweetbrass - plus it helps to make the holes show up nice and clearly on camera ;) haha!

I have had a Killarney D whistle for awhile. Its the favorite in my collection.
Clogging is a small issue, but it's not a biggy.
Cleaning regularly is required. I use warm water with a small amount of dish washing solution to give me a clear sound again.
Like most metal whistles it needs warming up before playing.
Playing in a breeze does challenge me. But all in all the quality and sound is superb.
Which do you have, the brass or the nickel, and how has the finish held up over that period of time?

I've had a Killarney D for a while now. Mine is nickel. It has tarnished a bit but I like that. I like to see a whistle that looks well played. I agree with you on C whistles, I'll only pick one up if I'm playing with other musicians and it has to be that key. My C of choice is an old Generation. If you can find one with a line running up the mouthpiece that means they were made pre-1983 and are very different from the new ones of today. I know your're not a fan of Generation whistles, but check ebay ect. Find one at a bargain price and you may get a pleasant surprise.
That’s a great tip about Generation! Is the line up the front or the back?
@@ariellelionessofYah Hi Ari'el, the line goes up the front of the mouthpiece. They do turn up on Ebay now and again are not usually too expensive. I have picked them up for just 99p.(English money) if you are interested here's a link to a vid I posted on my 99p whistle, you can see the line quite clearly in the picture of the whistle. I love whistle unveiling ceremonies CutiePie and yours was wonderful. Rough & Ready! I have all three Killarney keys C, D, Eb in both nickel and brass. Greedy I guess. I don't polish but do clean each whistle with warm soapy water regularly. I gift the Killarney nickel whistles to each Mighty Shamrogue whistler for their birthdays, also a Freeman tweaked Blackbird D whistle and they all have them. Your birthday is coming soon so I might have to do something special for you. I am so looking forward to your next Killarney whistle review. As for the drool and condensation on whistles keep in mind that when first playing whistle, any whistle , people tend to salivatate as with Pavlov's dog... the mouth waters. Yes, there is a condensation factor that playing environment may have a role as with colder room blowing warm air down a tube. My experience has shown at first I'm a wet blower, but, drooling diminishes the longer I continue to play to a point it is quite comfortable with no watering. Anyway, happy Tuesday... and be well!
Brass Burkes are like that. They are really heavy on the head, but the aluminum versions feel much more like any other whistle.
Oh, by the way....Thankyou so much for showing the SweetBrass by Chris Well. After listening to it, I had to get it, and whow do I love this whistle. It's sure a special one, and more I play it, more I'm in love. My Sindt is and will be always my go to whistle, but the SweetBrass is not far away. You can't compare them i think. They both have something special. 💖

A good C whistles in general is hard to find. You're not the only one that has mentioned it. I've heard it many times on forums. Hmmm, strange.

Re polishing: I've personally found "Peek Polish" (by royal appointment) is fantastic for brass, nickel, and aluminium whistles. With aluminium it first goes a scary black colour (paniiiiiic!)... then you polish it off, give it a wash with some detergent, and it is very shiny and stays that way for a long time. Wear gloves ;-)
Love that you played Erins Shore. I saw the Corrs playing it on their Unplugged DVD and have wanted to learn it on the whistle!
I have a brass D Kilarney Whitley and love it! Going to buy nickel and other keys. Looking forward to your review. It did take very long to get use to weight.

Phew! just finished the play thru 31 vid playlist now. I'm only on #22 NA Flute sounds on the play thru entire vid archive of #176 so a long ways to go there. I did hear the Faun video again where you mentioned you don't make any revenue from those particular vids. At least your number of viewings increases even if no monetary benefit. Always fun though.

I have had a killarney whistle since last summer which i bought while i was in Killarney. Lovely sound compared to my sweetone but you do need to blow fairly strongly. It does clog though which is annoying. I hope you enjoy yours. Looking foward to your review in a few weeks.

Great review! Killarney was one of the two whistles I got stuck between when I got my first (eventually settles on Syn whistles in Bb, C, D, and Eb). Maybe it's time to look at getting a Killarney! Btw, the in-universe name for that GOT song is "Jenny of Oldstones". I look forward to hearing it!

I purchased a Killarney D whistle a few months ago. There are many things that I like about it, but the "two-finger" C-natural is tough to keep in tune, although it's MUCH better than my Jerry Freeman tweaked Generation D whistle. I also have a Gene Milligan D whistle (wooden) that produces an absolutely impeccable C-natural. Why can't they all be like that?
Have you tried a Susato C whistle...very rich and smooth
I borrowed a friends Killarney a few weeks ago as I was thinking of getting one as I like the tone and the sound but I can't the C nat to play in tune. I have tried various fingerings but nothing seems to improve it. I have read other reviews that say the same. So it's off my wish list.
To reduce the amount of air and avoid squeaking in high notes that require a lot of pressure, insert about one cm of a drink plastic straw whole or half or less than half, depending on how wide the air hole is.
The Killarney was my first (and only) Tin Whistle. I have the one in D.
For it to sound in tune with other instruments, I need to pull the mouthpiece out a little bit. I often check with a guitar tuner. Sometimes in the second octave it's still lower than the backing track, even though the first octave is in tune.
Interesting when you said that each whistle requires a certain air pressure for each note, to sound in tune. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that once you get accustomed to them.

Thanks for the review amiga! I’m about to order one all the way from Miami 🌴☀️ but I’m torn between the brass and the Nickel! This would be my first “professional” level pennywhistle. In your honest opinion would you recommend any other whistle in the same price range?

The background is just my living room, exactly as it is every day.
The globe is a jigsaw puzzle and it does not have the USSR on it.
I have not played chess for a while, but I have played Hive, which is similar. The chess set has been away in the games cupboard for a few years, just got it out recently, hoping to find time for a game soon!
The mirror is mainly used for styling my hair 🤣

Great video, great hair :) as for the C-whistle problem, I think I really like my cheap Feadóg in C (standard version with brass tube and green head) have you tried it? intonation, playability and tone seems really good, but maybe I was lucky with the particular whistle they sent me (?)

I bought a Killarney whistle as my first whistle and I absolutely love it!! I bought it about 3-4 weeks ago and I practice it every day! the thing I'm trying to learn now are how to make the whistle taps/rolls and stuff do you have any tips on learning this? :) and I just bought my first low whistle, a MK pro in red :D love your videos!!!

Looks a lot like the Sindt wvistles, especially my High D with Sterling Silver bodh and the mouthpiece is just like the Killarney, Brass and Delrin, looking all the same, no difference at all as I can see. Wonder how the difference is between them in sound. 😊
Hi Stephanie. Just wondering about that C-whistle problem you have. I've noticed that various whistles in different keys can be very different than one key away. Some seem like they just sing with a rich tone (such as D key of a model) and the next one, such as a C in that same model, can seem shallow and buffered down in tone. I am wondering if there is close to an ideal match of a tube bore diameter to it's ideal key, and the more they stray from that ideal match, the less harmonics or tonal quality are possible? I'd like to see that tested. I'm just guessing. The design of the fipple/head part may be part of the answer, and maybe some design options help the tone of all key/bore matches stay vibrant, while some designs only allow some keys to really get through with rich tone. Some whistle maker who can adjust the tube bore for every key (ever been done?) would have to answer that, if they've experimented. Recorder makers have probably experimented a lot with this issue.
Most C whistles have adjusted bore sizes and weights to suit their key (from my experience with different brands) but yes, I'm not sure how the maker has come to those specific sizes when making the C - I guess by experimentation searching for the best tone in that key, as you suggested? I've tried a few different mouthpiece types too searching for a good C but they simply don't do it for me...It might just be my ears - maybe they just don't like the sounds of C whistles! There must be a perfect one out there somewhere!! :)

Still going to go for a Killarney myself, but I'm leaning toward the brass. Even though it tends to get that discoloration that all brass gets I think it looks better than some excessive wear of a nickel whistle around finger holes that in some cases my turn black. A couple of people on the sessions have mentioned that.
Although I just put out feelers to see what others think about their nickel Killarney's after having them for some time.
Then again, you also have to factor in individual people's acidity and if they bother to wipe down their instrument afterwards.
So, yeah, the nickel looks very very cool new I'm just concerned about the appearance after having it and played it for awhile.
Anyone here have such experience with either the brass or the nickel

I have the brass model. It is nice. Main pipe becomes dull and super bright where finger holes are from playing.
I like the traditional older appearance.

Try wiping the whistles down with a silicon cloth sold in sporting goods stores to wipe down firearms and fishing reels.

Susato and Lír don't need much breath and both have pretty decent volume.

Also, do you have any opinions on whether a cobre requires much breath, as I have heard that this is a good loud whistle. Is the fingering the same for the same song for all 3?
It depends how you want to play the tune. The keys of whistle are different, so if you want to play the tune in EXACTLY the same key on each whistle, the fingering will change. If you don't mind playing the tune in a different key, the fingering can stay the same.

Thanks for the review, stephanie! I have a Clarke Meg D but I don't really love it. When I received it, it had a little crack on the mouthpiece and it seems to be going bigger. Also, the shape is really odd, maybe something happened between the seller and my house, I don't know. I want to buy a new one, something not really expensive and specially not really loud. do You recommend something? thanks for sharing you knowledge.

I guess it Boils down to your personal Preference, and you don't like C because you prefer lower sounding Whistles, just a guess CutiePie.
Not at all, but I just haven't found a C whistle that plays as well as other high whistles. I have some cracking D whistles, but no decent C whistles.

The silver head joint on my flute legit looks like it has soot on it, its tarnish, it is just aesthetic no one cares, most pro flute players have tarnished flutes
I see you have Daenerys Targaryen's hair! You should have completed the look by holding a Starbuck's coffee cup :). I think the Killarney whistles are mainly praised by the Traditional players. From what I understand, It's a copy of the John Sindt whistle, which is practically a magical artifact to some. That whistle is near impossible to get. Also, the "bite" to the tone, is intentional. As Trad players do not necessarily warm to modern tones. I've never got my hands on one. But, I think you pretty much summed it up when you said the tone mainly comes from the player. Anyone that buys a Killarney whistle to sound better, is going to be sorry.
