    great analysis and 100% agree,
spurs need players with a running game that can wriggle around and move compress field defenses .
wingers in particular, since counter attack risks are minimized.
you can either change the existing behaviors of the current squad , or bring new mindset in . very clear ange hadnt won the mind set battle last season , so is a 2nd pre season going to change that .
there are two elephants in the room re all this for spurs
elephant 1 , is the creativity and running game of the midfield . city won the league with 3 to 4 mids with an attack contribution of over .5 goals per 90 mins, spurs only have one mid that qualifies, madders. has a 2nd ange pre season created more creative upside in sarr, Bentancur , lo celso and biss, i doubt it very much , and whether bergvall and gray change that dynamic is a very very big question from the evidence of the pre season,
i hate saying it, but for angeball to work , bentancur, biss , and even perhaps sarr need to be replaced, i would keep lo celso , who i thnk is more creative .
elephant 2, is the back office coaching staff. all i saw was the consistent prevalence of negative behaviors offensively and defensively last season . everyman and their dog knows about the compress field defense that was thrown against spurs , yet no evidense of a behavioral response from the team , and thats on the coaches. something is going wrong at training , and the same lot are still there . listening to chris davies and mile jedinak does not inspire me with confidence, not sure if any have moved on but thats a bigger priority than player recruitment.
lets hope , like at celtic , when the rest of the league had worked out how to play ange , he doubled down, and brought a bigger sledge hammer to the fight , and solanke is part of that solution.
still time left for spurs to bring in a tricky mid with a running game

He's decent but we still have no CDM, and no cover for Madders, VDV or Udogie...but at least ange has signed 4 single digit pace merchants on top of son and kulu that were already with us for wide forward.
This looks like Conte's summer transfer window where he signed for ideological commitment rather than fixing the weak areas. There is usually a price to pay for that, and our defence will let us down again next season due to how ange plays the holding mids and fullbacks, and who he has kept as defensive coach.

    • @OhSoSpurs
      @OhSoSpurs  5 месяцев назад

@@davidthompson9141 Postecoglou inherited a squad that had three layers (Romero, Porro and Son) in the entire squad that were the standard we required.
He addressed the major issues first.
      We needed a 10 - Maddison
We needed a centre LCB - Romero
We needed a right winger - Johnson
We needed a keeper - Vicario
We needed to offload a bunch of deadwood - Ndombele, Sessengon, Tanganga, Gil, Rodon, Dier, Winks, Royal and Hojberg
      We still needed
      A back CB - Dragusin
      A better no 9 - Solanke
A ball carrying winger who can also play 10 - Odobert
A backup wing back and defensive midfielder who can ball carry - Gray
A creative central midfielder - Bergvall
All of that has happened in a single year. How on earth can you claim Spurs aren't aggressively moving forward. The senior squad of 22 players Ange inherited has changed by 16 players in 1 year!
Spurs have the 3rd highest net spend in Europe this season. The 5th highest in Europe over the last 5 seasons despite having the 9th highest revenue.

    • @davidthompson9141
      @davidthompson9141 5 месяцев назад

@@OhSoSpurs nah mate. Going into this summer going off the biggest problemn areas last season spurs needed:
      1) To ditch Mile Jedinak as defensive coach after the horrendous job he done last season, where basic problems werent dealt with week after week, and we had one of our worst defensive seasons in decades with one of our best backlines, player for player. That hasnt been done.
      2) We desperately needed a beast of a CDM who can be a commanding presence in midfield, pass well, organize the midfield and fullbacks defensively and slot in at CB on set pieces. That has not been done and Gray is a Right Back who played 75% of last season as a right back and Ange has even stated he sees as a right back. Ange prioritizes attacking qualities over defensive qualities in his holding mids and his fullbacks, leaving the 2 CBs as the only two outfield players that are there primarily to defend. That is a big part in why conceded so many last season and why we wont kick on or progress in cup comps under Ange regardless of the quality we have in personel.
      3) We needed a CF. IMO that has been done well and Solanke would have been around the top of my list to bring in there.
      4) We needed genuine cover and competition for Maddison, ideally a true central 10 (where maddison is a repurposed wide 10 who often looks anonymous in the centre and thrives in space, that doesnt exist in the centre). This has not been addressed and Maddison will miss his standard 2 or 3 months of the season, aswell as having to come off 60 or 70 minutes into games, leaving us with probably Kulu or Bergvall as our only makeshift options to cover. I think that is overly optimistic.
      5) Either a LB and LCB or a player such as Calafiori that play both roles well.
      6) A squad replacement for Emerson if Emerson left - Ange has done this with Gray/Spence and we are yet to see how that will work out.
IMO Ange has signed 4 teenagers to perpetuate his excuses "We've got a young squad mate" "Its a long project mate" "I had a massive job when I came in mate" "I lost Harry Kane mate".
One thing that worried me about Ange signing more one dimensional pace merchants this summer was what Ange did last season that showed tactical ineptitude. Ange kept playing Werner and Johnson against low block defences, even when it clearly wouldnt work because pace merchants are generally useless against low blocks, as the low block's purpose is to close down space around the goal and to stop runners getting behind. It's intelligent creative players and top finishers that are most effective against low blocks because they keep possession in the final third, keep the ball moving and keep probing the opposition defence for weak points and quality key passes or shooting opportunities.
Ange dropped 23 points last season to low block teams considerably behind us, aswell as getting knocked out of the league cup by fulham (who also humiliated us 3-0 in the league), and we struggled both games against luton and were losing to sheffield until like the 96th minute on top of that.
Ange's preferred pace merchants are exactly what jose played (creative mid only ever in the centre and only ever pace merchants out wide) and comes unstuck in the same games jose come unstuck in. So it was always a worry for Ange to sign multiple layers of the same attacking style that comes unstuck against a certain type of opposition, we will continue to drop points against low blocks next season as Ange's billy basic attacking plays are predictable and were worked out by the league last season.'
Odobert does look a promising player and although he didnt have a great return of goals last season he is still young and could improve, but when Brennan Johnson is struggling to break down Fulham, I dont see Odobert coming on and offering anything decisive.
I believe ange is a little league manager with an eye for a decent player and in the little leagues that quality advantage has helped gloss over the gaoping holes in his philosophy. At this level however, he has been found out and will continue to be found out.
Also, I contest that only 3 players were the quality we required when ange arrived. It's Ange's rigidity as a manager that makes good players look average. Bentancur was definitely a top quality player but Ange has got nothing ot of him so far, whilst players like Maddison, Porro and Kulu also dropped off a cliff when ange was playing timo in the second half of last season.
I had my standard bet on spurs for the league this season but am realistic that it will likely be a season of turmoil and managerial change when we realise ange is out of his depth.

Id argue Eze is primarily a 10 who can deputise on the wing.
Odobert is a winger who can deputise as a 10

Desperation signing because Loser Levy doesn't want to bring in quality, this kid managed 5 goals in 35 games for a relegated Burnley side, but no worries he will guide us to the promise land, should have just kept Donely or is our academy players not good enough to play in the premiere league?
