So, in order to figure out whether to pitch up or down, you need to know the original keys of the song that you’re using.
Once you figure that out, figure out how many places higher or lower the key is on this list:
      C
      B
      A#/Bb
      A
      G#/Ab
      G
      F#/Gb
      F
      E
      D#/Eb
      D
      C#/Db
      C
I repeated “C” on the list because it’s more of a circle than a list. For example, let’s say that you want to change something from A#/Bb to C#/Db, you count up A#/Bb -> B -> C -> C#/Db = 3 steps up. So, you pitch up +3. Or, if you want to go go G, you count down A#/Bb -> A -> G#/Ab -> G = 3 steps. So, you pitch it down -3.
Now, songs are composed in either a major or minor chord progression. Basically, major chord progressions sound happier and minor chord progressions sound more somber. Every major chord has a corresponding minor chord. The reason for this is that most of the notes in the progressions are the same with a few minor changes. Because of this, you can usually get away with mixing the two. This doesn’t work as well with instrumentals and some acapellas. It’s a bit of trial and error. Here’s the list of the major chords and their minor counterparts:
      C major = A minor
      B major = G#/Ab minor
      A#/Bb major = G minor
      A major = F#/Gb minor
      G#/Ab major = F minor
      G major = E minor
      F#/Gb major = D#/Eb minor
      F major = D minor
      E major = C#/Db minor
      D#/Eb major = C minor
      D major = B minor
      C#/Db major = A#/Bb minor
      C major = A minor
Let’s use the first example again. So, I want to convert a song from G minor to C#/Db major. First, I see what’s G minor’s corresponding major chord. It’s A#/Bb major. Like earlier, we then count up three steps. So, we would pitch it up +3. Typically, most acapellas will work as either their major or minor chord. Instrumentals are a lot less flexible and need to be used in one way or the other.
